Kakwa

ive ridin in 8+ different areas all over the north here and id have to agree that unless u got sunny day, get there the day after the trails been groomed and have a camp way in.. its not even worth the drive. that two lakes road is by far the worse one ive dorving to get to an area

Ok we were thinking about doing a sunday and monday ride.
O well just have to push it to a monday tuesday ride no problem.

Why is that though? Just curious.

I was just being a smart azz

No problem. TO me, Kakwa will always be the best place I ever road sleds in. Sometime in the future when my 2 boys are old enough, I will take them in. Maybe even start setting up the camp again.

My group of riding buddies started the area known as "BORDER TOWN"

Great group of friends and along with a couple other camps with guys from Beaverlodge...it was alot of fun.

We have not set up our camp since about 2001/02 and the last time I was sledding in Kakwa was a daytrip in 2004.

I sure miss it. Just to busy to ride now like I use too.

yes!! slick, you are my new best friend!!!! all my buddies talk about pine pass.....blah blah blah.... if you cant handle a few extra kms on your sled (40 from parking lot to lake) then maybe you should be a GM spokesperson or something!!! Ha ha!! I go sledding to actually ride my sled, strange as that may seem!!! tiny balls, i mean bowls, suck big wang! vast vajayjay is the way to go!!! oh, maybe i said too much! all you hassler guys arent gonna like me! Impulse all the way!

hasslers ok for one day outa the year, but after I've climbed every line there in one afternoon I tend to look for more. Am I alone on this?
If your sled runs good you should only burn 2-3 gallons to get to the lake. So six at the most round trip. Most guys ride sleds with 150+" tracks now, just don't waste that tunnel space! I carry ten gallons on mine, plus the 12 in the tank, makes for aroung a 220km day. Good stuff. Made two hassler trips last year and one tumbler, fifteen multi day trips to kakwa. Big differece. And to those who say hassler has the steepest gradient in north america, check out alexander, if you're man enough. lol

Kakwa is a nice place to ride, but as far as it being the best area to ride.
Is there such a thing as the best?
Ever ride the Pemberton/Whistler area? a short ride in to area and if you are an aggressive rider you can burn 80 liters in 4 to 5 hours. All the deep and steep you can handle.
Unless the trail has just been groomed the ride into Kakwa sucks.
I'd rather have a 140km day on the hills then have a 220km day with 100km of it trail.
Imho of the countless places I have been Kakwa would rank somewhere in the middle of the pack.

My favs are
Pemberton
Golden
Blue river
Stewart
Sicamous
Barkerville
Revy

ya I've been to pemberton a couple of times it's really really good riding. However I don't live there and kakwa is a lot closer. Also if I'm going to kakwa I go for 4 days minimum. If you do it like that it is the better area i.m.o. because you don't have 100 k plus of trail to get in there if you're already there with all your gas you just get up ion the morning and ride in some of the best terrain there is. If you spend some good time in kakwa with people that know the area you will rank it much higher than middle of the pack. For me I would personally say that in all of b.c. stewart rates #1, pemby icecap #2 and kakwa #3 but they are all so good it doesn't matter

Its not like it use to be. Ever since the population /growth in Grande Prairie...Kawka has tons more people/riders now IMO.

Been going there since 1990 myself, and have some buddies that been riding in there in early 80's

Don't take this the wrong way, but how has the population growth in GP changed the Riding Area?... Yes the parking lot can get real busy some days and if the groomer is down it does take long for the trail to go for pot. But if it wasn't for the increased intrest would the club have the groomer they do today?.

I know what ya mean about lots of people, the area is so big that most days I'm out there I only run into a handful of guys where I go. (way more congested at hasller and beaver creek) Ya I also know all those guys who have been riding Kakwa since they were born and think they own the place. I have No problem with them but I hope that when the enviromentalist's go to shut the whole place down, they are the first in line to fight to kept it open (with the help of people like myself who have only been riding there since who cares) There is force in numbers and we all need to stick together to keep it open and "work" to get back some of the area's we lost a couple years ago.

No offense, just my 2 cents

I thougt this was a thread about Kakwa conditions, not where's the best place to ride. LOL. Anyone going out the first day Kakwa opens?

well i got a buddy thats on his way back from setting up his camp today so i can let u all kno the conditions by tomorrow im hoping that is if he went far enough in to check things out

There isn't much for snow on the first portion of the trail, it gets progressivly better the further you go. I'm guessing there should be 2-3 feet at the cabin by now.

Muhaha ever take someone up the back way to mt sir A then down the stairway and turbo hill to saddle creek? That's usually a good pants wetting experience if they're not expecting it lol

hahaha yeah guys took me in there for the first time last march, thought I understood the term 'mountain riding' but up till that point I hadn't seen $hit! lol. Knees were clacking at both that off chamber downhill with the cliff on the left on the south side of the glacier after the ridge and the entry to the stairway. Wow! Was pretty cool to say the least, I'll admit it, was scared retarded everytime my heavy old tripple tried taking me straight downhill on that off chamber downhill sidehill, very humbling up there! Loved it!
