I P riding

When are you going to be up in Island Park?

We are going to be over there on the 18th of January thru the 22nd . We are coming from Boise . My buddy reserved a cabin supposively by jefferson for that time , so basically we need to know which way to go from that area . Sounds like alot if diff. riding areas , and yes , we are avalanche ready and aware , always !!! :face-icon-small-ton If your're going to be up there at that time , or anyone else on here , let me know . Always dig big groups !!!
It would be nice to have a guide to the goods !!! later .

do you know the name of the cabin?

I know of three popular ways into Jefferson. if you come up from the south (from the shotgun area), you can get there by heading up
1) Willow Creek/Tin Cup Creek or
2) Tyler Creek/Yale Creek.

or you can go around the long way and
3) come in from the north up the South Fork Duck Creek.

I just remembered another from the south:
4) up Blue Creek to Reas Peak, down the Butt Crack into Hells Roaring and over that way.

here, check out this attached overview map.

Is Willow creek a bunch of real tight Boon Dokken ,up a couple of hills, over a couple of meadows?

it is if no one has been in willow creek that is a good description if alot of people have been riding it, a better description is 6 or 7 miles of supercross style whoops.:beer; Find someone to take you in threw Rays

Thats funny right there. That's exactly right. I like going in from the Old West parking lot and up to the top of Reas then down through hell roaring. Blue creek takes you through a couple avy prone areas that should probably be avoided right now. Following the bottom part of Blue creek to the Reas cutoff is OK too. Personally, I think the Reas area is funner/ safer in deep pow but Jeff is Tres chic.

I think we're talking about the same place. It's nice if your the first person through. Where is rays from Shotgun Village?

Reas is up Blue Creek. It's the first major right, about 2 miles west of shotgun. this way into Reas isn't too bad. About 4 miles in is really the only rough spot along the way at a place we call the "shoulder"...it's a short but narrow climb with trees on one side, steep canyon on the other and up the middle is usually rutted and icy. Another half mile after that and you'll pop out of the trees and on the open slopes of Reas Peak.

Let me know if you want more directions to get to Jefferson from there.

I wouldn't call Willows boondocking at all...Willows felt like a superhighway...one of the widest logging roads I've been on. Then the second part of that route (along Tin Cup Creek) is tight trail but still no boondocking.

I'd say the way up Yale Creek is more boondocking through tight trees with open meadows and play areas along the way. There's a great big meadow in the area between Tyler Creek and Sawtelle Peak Rd, just before you cut through the trees again and hook up with Yale Creek.

snow conditions from 12-28

Rode IP yesterday. We had some sled issues and rode in the Sawtell area, it was pretty good snow you could go just about anywhere you wanted. A few stumps and rocks sticking up still so you had to be a little careful but for the most part it was good riding and good snow. Beware of the tree wells, they will suck you in deep right now. Still need a couple more feet before its epic but we had a lot of fun when we wernt fixing a sled.

Yeah that where I'm talking about Yale Creek, it's tight basically one way trail through tight tree's. then up a hill to an open Meadow or two.

Most of Your Directions

Are spot on.

One thing about riding this area, It is EXTREME avalanche area, and the snow is DEEP right now and has fracture layers.

WEAR a beacon, KNOW how to use it, carry probes & Shovel.
KNOW how to read wind loaded slopes and STAY off them.

Have fun, Be safe!:)

that's my own personal map but it's software based and transferable. all you would need is National Geographic's TOPO software to open the file. See http://www.topo.com

every time we go out, I take my GPS and record the tracks. this helps me see where we were with respect to where we've been whenever exploring new areas. over time, I end up with a very accurate and detailed map (that is also printable on weather-resistant paper sold at REI).

lately, I've been working to get my TOPO maps converted for use as basemaps on a GPS.

Great base need more snow

12/30/07 Island park Id. Another glorious week here in IP. We got in yesterday and the snow is awsome. The roads sucked but that only means that the snow is here. Hoping for more snow this week with some occasional blue skies would be awsome........ After some riggin to get the F7 to a 156'' Ive finally found the right combo for this sled and my riding style... The new purchase is Ok but laking (03 F7 136'' BMP single pipe attitude inds. EFI controller and NOS)...Leave em stock and they run great..... They havent plowed the Big Springs parking lot yet but the trails were decent today. Played in the meadows all day between big springs and twwo top junction nice base and 12 to 18 inches of fluff.

Riding Reas or Jefferson tomorrow

Our buddies couldn't go so it's me and Outlaw. If anyone else wants to go we'll probably have breakfast at Boondocks around 9, decide how to go in, where to avoid...

we spent 4 days down there, Snow was good but some of the trails were rough, rode lionshead area one day and stayed north of island park res. the next day. found some good untracked areas with a little searching.

South Fork Duck Creek

numbskull;84248 or you can go around the long way and 3) come in from the north up the South Fork Duck Creek. QUOTE said:
How's this route?

Started up it last year but turned back as it was getting dark.

I hope to hit this year. We'll be there Jan 11-20th.

Also will check out the son-cross races in West on the 19th.
