Is the Belt drive worth it over the chaincase?

I rode the 13 and 12 on a demo ride a few weeks ago. You can tell the difference between the 13 and 12 very easily. The 13 is SOO much more snappy off and on the throttle. Also it is easier to turn over. And its not just the addition of a belt drive. they changed the whole jackshaft. When i asked the polaris guys about gear changing they said right now there is no options. Now im sure the aftermarket guys will come up with a drop and roll and a longer belts. Id think it would be easier to do a drop and roll now cause you dont have to worry about the chain case or having and extended chaincase. Either way. I snowchecked a 13pro.

I have a hard time believing that the belt drive makes that much difference in throttle response like the reports are coming back. And people report it is easier to turn over? It wouldn't surprise me if Polaris changes the timing on the engine, or some other hidden makeover on these few demo sleds that are out there to give it that throttle response or feel. What changes have they done that make it turn over easier. Can you you tell the difference when there is 8 or 5 gallons of gas left, I can't. I own a 12' PRO and like the sled, no I haven't rode a 13'. This is just my two cents. More than anything I don't believe that Polaris wouldn't pull a fast one on there customers or any other manufacturers. Remember this is just my two cents and I think the new features are great and definately wasn't expecting this much from Polaris.
 
I was skeptical at first as well. Ive rode the 12 pros before the demo ride. There idea on the easier to throw around was cause of x amount of weight in rotating weight loss in the belt drive. Said it was like 15# easier to throw around or something. You could feel it. I noticed mostly the snappiness of the 13 over the pro. But my favorite part about the 13 was hands down the running boards.
 
i have heard reports of the tensil strength of the actual belt being upwards of 17000 lbs. Take that how you want to but it sure sounds impressive. It certainly had to be a consideration during engineering as the turbo 2stroke market continues to grow every yr. I may be way out of whack here but one of my concerns is the carbon fiber supports on the top. Cf is strong and light but instead of bending parts that can be straightened and reinforced now you shatter and destroy them. Also will they become brittle with age? Love the direction polaris is moving and am fighting to find a reason not to snow check.....
 
Whats the turbo going to do to the belt drive?Is it going to be able to handle the HP?

Top fuel drag cars run this type of belt on blowers/superchargers and they are pushing way more horse power then a turbo 800.

Here is a link from some years ago about the CMX belt drive system and the power required to run a chain case vs. belt drive. They have been using the belt drive since the 90's.

i heard they changed a arms, (lighter) and shortened front shocks as well, if this was done it will enhance the feeling of it being more nimble...
im sure the belt drive adds to this as well.
just a thought, not sure if its the case or not though...

You bet as mentioned above drag cars have and still run drive clog belts.
Industrial use is huge in hydro plants and production lines. I worked where a 1500 hp motor drove 50 belts and saftey measure was it had to stop "almost" on a dime. The belts withstood it. This plant ran 7 days a week 24 hours a day on these things for years, with little or no problems.
BTY chain drives would snap when subjcted to the safety stop.
 
I find it impressive that we have a rubber belt driving another rubber belt, driving another rubber belt...and these things are as durable and consistant as they are. We beat the tar out of them with 150+hp and rarely a failure. Pretty dang impressive IMO.

Dan doesn't have any 13s. Reason why is no spare parts. You ride hard in his class, everyone is pushing their limits pretty hard. We didn't break anything critical but I don't think a 13 would be operational for long. I was set in not getting a new 13 before the class, going to get one for sure now.

im sure this was in the enginering but by the looks of things if that belt breaks or anything happens isnt all breaking power never going to get to the drivers?

Same deal as the chaincase. These belts are similar style (though larger) as timing belts on OHC engines (4 stroke) and they have change intervals of 90,000 miles and up. I know camshafts don't take that much torque to rotate but that is alot of revolutions. Belts are tough and easy to inspect. Just look at it every so often, if its looking worn, replace. It probably isn't going to snap within a few thousand miles...
