headed to west yellowstone, what to expect?

me and some buddies are headed to west Yellowstone the second week of January, just wondering what the snow is like at that time? from the pics i have seen it looks to be a blast out there.
also two of the guys going need to rent sleds, just wondering if anyone could recommend anywhere? brand is not an issue really, prefer cat or ski doo, but does not have to be
thanks for any info

expect very rough trails but worth it if the snow is good, not really sure whats the best place to rent as i have only had to rent once and rented from the arctic cat dealer.

trails? what are those?

No worries at all on renting sleds...Some of the hotels have their own rentals...Some just rent from the Doo dealer or the Cat dealer...PLENTY of rentals in town...

Depending upon where you stay, they may even have their own guide or group that you can hang with...Kurt at Golden West motel, generally takes his customers out each day...and if your sled breaks down, he has a shop you can use to work on it...great guy

that time of year, you should have plenty of base, and should have easy pickings to find fresh snow if you are not afraid to venture off the beaten path...

rough trails my azz. last couple of years traffic has been way down and may be a little choppy on the way back in the eve. they still groom every day. last year they hit big sky trail on a regular basis when we were there

we are staying at the golden west, couple of the guys have stayed there before and said it was great and that kurt was awesome to deal with.
thanks for the info, i will call the cat and ski doo dealers to see what rates are

Call Kurt and ask where to rent from. He has some pull and may be able to get you a deal ;)

If I was to go back to West, I'd be at Kurts for sure.

Thats true Blu Du they have been better. We have been there every year for the past 7 years and it has gotten better. Its a great time every year only bad year we have had is when we went to the expo the snow wasnt real great to warm but the expo was great.

Ron at Hi Mark Rentals has both Cat and Polaris. 406-640-1055. He's be willing to help you out also. Trails are usually in excellent contiton by then. Have fun...remember your AVY gear!

Pretty normal for expo to be hit or miss...two years ago it was near 60 for expo...but the week before we got HAMMERED with snow, and the week after...so us locals had a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!

Last year Expo, we rode in this...we were pushing 2+ feet of pow on the trail in...

Janurary is cold, bring your warmest clothes, and dont be suprised if it never breaks 0. However, it could be in the 30's the whole time, just be prepared. You can't ride in the park unless you are on a 4-stroke and with a guide (and you will stay on the trails), so if that interests you look into that. (not me, I can't guide in the park).

The riding is easy to find, just get a map.

Happy to answer any questions, tho

thanks for all the replies, all of us ride 2 strokes. sounds like it should be a blast out there.
thanks for the pics! they look great! i want to find some areas like that!! i will give kurt a call and see what he says about rentals

Check with Ron from Highmark Rentals also, 3 brands of sled to choose from, and he is one of the nicest guys I know in West. Or just swing by to check out some Two stroke turbo sleds, maybe even come riding with a few of us.
