Im bored. What do you pack for lunch on the mountain?

I like powerbars, chocolate dipped granola bars, cliff bars.
I usually get a 6" sub sandwhich.
I have begun in the last 3 to 4 years taking a couple energy gels with just 1x or 2x caffeine. I really like those, but they require water when eating. LOL
I LOVE to put a hotpocket or homemade breakfast burrito in the muff pot.
I ALWAYS take a bottle of water.
I always take a bottle of Mountain Dew for caffeine and flavor.
This year I've gotten into grabbing a TruMoo protein fortified VANILLA FLAVORED milk.

Anyone have vanilla flavored milk before? HOLY CRAP IT'S GOOD. They don't last very long during a ride. They taste so good, I usually pound the whole thing at the first stop.
I eat and drink a lot when I ride and am usually not tired and spent when I get to the truck. When I get home I usually find that I've still dehydrated down a couple of pounds.

One time, just for the sake of science I had a deep powder January ride. Typical powder day with some sticks, some sweating, head steaming when helmet was off..etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. I took all my food and beverage with me, but I ate and drank NOTHING the whole ride until I returned home. I'm slender at 5'8", 145 pounds. I was 6 pounds lighter than when I left that morning. For me, that's a lot of weight to sweat out during the day. Whatever you weigh, you won't feel that great when you dehydrate away 4 or 5 % of your body weight in the day.

If you are a 200 pound guy, that's 10lbs of sweat left in your riding gear, LOL. I bet you'd feel like crap that night when you get home.

Lots of water for me, 64oz plus a small bottle of something with electrolytes in.

This summer for an alternative to energy/power bars which are basically expensive candy bars I've been using some homemade bars for mtbing with great results.

1 cup nuts. (I've been using half roasted almonds and sunflower seeds)
1 cup dried fruit. (usually apricots)
1 cup dried dates.
Put all that into a food processor until it turns into a ball and then press it into a pan and throw in the fridge. Cut it into squares when cold.

I've started to eat a lot more during rides the last few years and it makes a big difference in energy levels.

yep so be sure to let us know where you are riding so we can stay UP wind

i have been riding mostly evenings after lunch going for tons of short rides throughout the year.

I mostly just bring some jerky and a bag of M&M's or something, a gatorade and some water. I have to be religious about hydration as I go for such short rides i tend to not stop and take breaks and when im riding out i notice my kidneys hurt really bad when hitting the bumps... days i make sure to stop and drink my water, not so much an issue!

People would be amazed to find out how much better they felt when they are properly hydrated.

Your piss should be almost clear. Yellow=a little dry. Brown=your kidneys have a short life-span.

- double americano for the drive
- lots of water
- buy or make really good sandwiches to toast in muff pot (wrap in parchment paper then tin foil works best)
- usually an apple or something similar
- granola or chocolate bar for quick energy
- I've even brought the alcohol on occasion :behindsofa:

I can't speak for everyone else's G.I. tract...but if you don't like to poop in the woods...beware. Don't load up at the coffee stand on the way to the mountain. LOL

I may have packed the occasional Cold Smoke or have even sunk low enough to put a PBR or 2 in my pack on mellow bring the gf days.:face-icon-small-win

Smokies are really easy and cook well, I like toasted sandwiches too. If I forget my muffpot I usually just grab a turkey Lunchables from the gas station. If I go full deadbeat I just stuff a couple mcdoubles in the muffpot.

Lil Smokies for lunch
Then stuff a burrito in for when I get back
3 waters
red bull
protein bar

We're lucky enough that many riding areas have cabins en route to the alpine for said "personal emergencies"

Banana, muffin, energy drink, Gatorade, and water for the drive to the hill. In the sled:
4 16oz bottles of water (smaller bottles stash better)
1 20oz Gatorade
4-5 granola bars
Hot pocket or two in the muffpot for lunch. Have done little smokies and BBQ sauce and they are pretty tasty. Forgot anything to eat them with so we had to whittle a couple points on some small sticks that were clinging to the sled. WPS sells some small plastic cooking bags that are sized just right for use in the muff pot. They work awesome.

I noticed that if I don't drink all of those water bottles and Gatorade during the ride I am wrecked toward the end. Keeping one in my goggle bag under the hood keeps it warm and helps me drink more than if it is ice cold. Even when I do drink them all it takes all night to get rehydrated again for the next day.

My Favorite are:

Johnsville Cheddar Dogs in the Muff Pot, and Costco's Steak Strips Beef Jerky, peanuts and raisins are always good for extra energy and believe it or not warmth. 1/2 to 1 gallon of water. I ride hard and Sweat alot, if I don't Hydrate I cramp up something Fierce.

If there's one near by...damn rights! "Cabin" = warming hut. Many of our riding areas have a cabin for either the snowmobile club, mountaineering club, ski touring hut, etc. Either on the logging road, or sometimes right in alpine. I'm definitely not from the city, but I do enjoying a seat for crapping where available.

On another note....I'm surprized how many people take energy drinks. Those things are god awful and probably about the worst thing you can ingest.

I take a 8oz red bull to help off set the tired feeling after I eat, so I don't ride sluggish for the next 20min. Better than getting plastered and trying to ride right?
