Everyone needs to have a hobby, it just depends where you decide to spend your money. Guys who sit at home doing their hobbies also spend as much as us sledders. Wood workers spend money on table saws, sanders, planers, drills, clamps, blades, bits, glue, wood, etc. Computer junkies need massive computers, monitors, back up hard drives, software, etc, that cost as much as a sled. Heck, when I get old I don't want to be the guy who remembers the good old days when he sat around enjoying watching Jello harden. Every hobby has a cost, I work hard and I'm happy with where I spend my money.
Unless a person was single or seriously in debt It would be hard to make ends meet on a 50K salary spending 11K on snowmobiling. Our family income is around 50K for a family of 4 and we live mostly paycheck to paycheck. 11K is more than I spend on my morgage and I have no vehicle payments since all my vehicles and toys are over 10 years old. I spend approx. 1500 per year on snowmobiling. I finance part of that cost by cutting down on meals while working saving the extra perdium I receive while working away from home. I buy a cheap late 90's model sled for the kids to ride each year riding it 1 season and parting it out the next doubling my money. Drive between 50 and 100 miles to ride. Usually park my sleds at the work cabin so I do not trailer often.
Truck & ins: $250 (I would have owned the truck anyway payed $2200)
Trailer: $25 (Homebuilt for $150)
Fuel: $400
Fixes and Mods: $275
Gear: $150 (Bought with birthday money)
Food: $120
Lodging: $0 (usually day trips or occationally stay an extra day at work cabin instead of driving back home.)
Booze: $75
Sled & Ins: $215 (Upgaded 2 years ago for $250 after selling old sled I rode for 8 years)
This thread is hilarious. I would say I'll be in the 20k range this year. And I'm totally ok with that. I'm single, I live in a single-wide trailer house that I RENT, my newest vehicle is a 1995 Powerstroke, and I eat alot of Ramen noodles. Just so I can spend the rest of my money on snowmobiles!!
Just found out that it is going to cost even more, I have a cracked cylinder on the Pro I just pulled down to put in new pistons.
