here in BC if you go to the pump you pay the road tax but if you go anywhere that sells boat gas the tax is knocked off.
cali is like 19cents for gas and 24 or 25cents per gallon of diesel.
part of mt. come from ohv permits, not sure on fuel tax, state tacks on .47 to fuel but don't know how much if any goes to ohv use
All states have road taxes on the fuel. Some states like Wi. sell non taxed fuel for agriculture but still chage for rec. use.
I'm in the trucking business and what I see as the biggest ripoff is the federal highway use tax. A flat fee of a little over $600 a year per truck. The money goes everywhere except to the highways! Most of it goes into railroad subsidies, some goes to bike paths and boat landings, and about 5% gets to the highway administration fund!
Acording to the link posted above Cali. is .64 for gas and .72 for diesel.
should be that way for all off road toys, such as sleds/boats/lawnmowers, you get the drift. Obviously the problem is people would definatly abuse it and they really dont have anyway to enforce it.

umm up here boat gas is also "Marked" gas , basicly dyed premium. if you get caught with it in your car/truck big fine. just like farm fuel, i should have explained that better in my first post. and yes just last summer the BC government made it leagal to run marked fuel in any off highway vehicle, quad/dirt bike/sled/lawnmower etc.
We have dyed diesel but not gas. Checked with my local supplier and they said if you want to fill out some fairly extensive paperwork I can be exempt on taxes for pumpgas. I dont burn enough gasoline to make it worth while.
The dyed offroad gas makes sense though! even though I know LOTS of people who run off road diesel in their trucks on the road, its a pretty hefty fine!!
