mine was running terrible all year, i have no idea if its because of that but lost a cyliner skirt took out the crank..

now im waiting on backordered parts and the snow has finally flew around here, its ridiculously deep in most spots for the past 2 weeks and theres nothing i can do about it.. got more time then i know what to do with off and cant even ride or film.. this sucks

i figured since pistons are backordered, and ive heard of a few of them, there has to be quite a few going
anyone else got info

Man, that's to bad. I lost my piston skirt on my dragon and took out my entire motor also. Luckily it was at the end of the year so no lost riding. Sorry for your loss. I know the first thing I am doing when I get a pro is getting rid of those crappy cast pistons. Do yourself a favor put some forged pistons in there and get rid of the "out of spec" cast pistons.

He's talking about the cylinder skirt, I have a question though how many 2012 have gone down and was there a change between 2011 and 2012 and if not will there be a change for 2013 {POLARIS}

The real issue is the short rod length that leads to heavy side loading on the cylinders. This hasn't changed since '08 and neither has the results.

Yes, but when you have a piston that rides in the cylinder correctly (in spec tolerances) its not slapping around in the cylinder breaking pistons skirts or cylinder skirts off.

The Cat 800 has the same bore and stroke as the Pro and the Cat rod is shorter..

IMO, the rod ratio is not the issue..

Rod ratio/excessive piston/wall clearance combination? With tighter piston this seems to go away from what I have heard....not to mention it runs a little stronger. ???

RKT< by chance have you checked deck heights between the poo and cat? the poo's are seeing more side thrust then the older (bigblock motors) motors I have looked at...still, with that said, turning up the oiler some, mixing some in the gas , and warming it up good before pinning it( even on those rest breaks) seems to aleviate most issues...

Thats what I was thinking also. I would like to add also if rpms's would contribute to added problems.

What i mean by this is that a lot of people here seem to run rpm's at different levels say 8000 to 8400 rpm. What might be interesting is with the failures that have happened is what rpm's were they running at? I am by no means engine smart here but maybe those who are could answer if higher engine rpm's could contribute to this type of engine failure.

My Buddy that has an 08 Dragon, went through 10 top ends and one bottom since new. He just installed a kit (cant remember name, will ask hime tonight) that has new pistons, rings and a spacer that you install between the cylinder and the block to raise the cylider up. He has put about 500 miles with no problems so far. He says the engine runs srtonger now too.

Anyone else here anything about this?

Now remember, there is no problem with Polaris motors or any of their designs. We are only a small number of person's with problems that is completely blown out of proportion by the internet.

:-)

Only takes a few to make it look like a big problem!!! How many thousand are out there now and when you are riding who has seen any being pulled out dead? Mine has 2500 miles on all out west and I have yet seen a pro 800 being pulled out!!!

When I started having problems with my sled fouling plugs left and right and it running crappy I had 2 Snowest members that own/or work at good sized aftermarket companies tell me what was wrong with my sled and why it happened. Next I got a pm from a member that stated they pulled apart 20 or so sleds last year with the same problem and what caused it. Must be associated with a dealer or a rental fleet was my guess. This was before I I told anybody what we found!! They were all right!!!! Pitted/chipped/flaking rings...along with piston damage/wear exactly where the intake transfer port is. Losing compression and fouling plugs.

I promised to each of these person to not use their names but how come they all knew what I had found before I told anybody? Is it because it didnt' exist or it was such a small sample that they were guessing? I don't buy it. Maybe the skirts breaking off is a bad thing that isn't happening to too many persons but their are a lot of other's having issues like I did that are finding the same results in the motors that I did.

You could reverse that school of thought and really ask, how many person's that ride aren't members of the Snowest Forums and how many of them have had problems? Also, if it's not an issue, why are the parts to repair on backorder?

Hey, I love my Pro but the motor needs to be a little better built/designed. I am just sick and tired of watching or hearing of Polaris claim "Oh, we've never heard of that." It's crap. Rant over.

Rings

Just pulled my pistons out to change them, not because i had to just preventive measures. 1700 miles, porting and pipe. Bottom rings on both sides pitted or flaking and top rings just starting to show same signs.

I feel the same. I understand how the people feel who haven't had any problems, but I also sympathize with those of have, me being one of them. It is hard to understand unless it happens to you personally, or someone you know. I have owned three Polaris snowmobiles in my career. In all cases I believed they had the best chassis for me, and were easy to learn on. That being said, I have gone through 3 cranks (05), top end, ecu, vr, chaincase, (09) injectors, motor mounts, new primary and secondary clutch, and a whole new engine:face-icon-small-sho (11). I am pretty sure I am forgetting a couple of things as well. All of the work was covered under warranty, and my dealer support has been nothing short of phenomenal. This is why I continue to ride one. I have noticed all sleds do have problems though, you just have to pick your poison. Believe it or not, I am actually encouraged this year more than any. It seems Polaris is LISTENING to some peeps on here. Something tells me these issues aren't going unnoticed. I am hoping as a consumer they take steps to remedy them, and make the sled more reliable. If and when they do that, WIN. For now I suppose I will just keep utilizing my warranty and roll the dice.:clock:

Has anyone considered running the fix kit? I remember when they first posted it here and everyone basically laughed and said "what issues?" when he claimed it fixed the piston issues on the Pro. Maybe he knew nothing had changed though and the fix could be something to look into? Especially once guys start running out of warranty.

Here's the original thread I was talking about.

Is the manufacturer for the "Fix Kit". PMS is a distributor. It utilizes a spacer plate and different pistons. It was developed for the Dragons but they do have a kit for the Pro also.

So far they have not had any failures with the "Fix Kit" that were as a result of any of their parts. The few failures on motors that have occurred were due to other problems and they worked with them to get them back up and running.
