I would like to hear your bad stories of putting on pipes/controllers/ cans/ y-pipes/ air box mods.
I have been thinking of doing all of this but can't afford to rebuilt a motor all winter. Just worried before I spend the cash... what am I getting into?
Are etg's the answer? Fool proof?
Sled is an 08 m1000 I ride at 9500-11,000ft
Thanks

Oh the horror!!!!!!

for me, it was called the season of 2007.

Boondocker box & speedwerx pipe.
I'll never put a bd box on a sled again,

EGT's are by NO MEANS fool proof, as I am a fool & they did not save me from my 4 or 5 burn downs in one season.

I did look at a used sled that was exactly what I wanted, the only reason I wouldn't buy it was it had twin pipes.
I know that I will not look at a modified sled for sale used, I had a friend that bought a used sled with twin pipes, he could not make it drivable above 2500' altitude.
A lot of the M sleds had problems with pipe/can.
Unless you want a challange, it's hard to figure out why a sled won't go properly when a couple of mods that don't work or are not compatible are giving you trouble.
I know some that go into the backcountry don't want to have a modified sled along.
To me "foolproof" is stock.

Boondockers box Vrs Powercommander Box

I had a 05 M7 that I put twin SLP pipes on with the boondocker box I hated it the box was all over throughout the day could not keep it adjusted right always adjusting . Will never buy anything from Boondockers again . But I have a friend that put slp pipe setup with the powercommander box on his 09 m1000 and has not had to adjust at all They proved to us that it works . I am going to put one on my m1000 this year The only thing with slp setup is there clutch set up is not that good stock weights and helex work better . We are working on a gear and clutch setup for that we just need to do a little more testing but we have a set up right now that I think will work much much better . Very reliable

I had the exact same experience. When the sled pulled, it went like a bat out of hell. All the other time it was popping, hesitating, etc. My experience with twins and Boondocker box have scarred me for life.

SLP add ons have always impressed me. While they may not gain the most compared to others, the driveabillity and dependabillity are second to none.

The power comander has good reviews, also slp has a map ready installed for the M1000 pipe combo !

I run SLP twins and a boondocker box on my 06 m7 and have nothing to complain about on that end of things. Remember with mods you need to have a decent understanding of how everything woks as a whole. I never had issues with the BD box, I run different maps for road riding and playing though which I think helps me. Don't be affraid to try, just learn everything you can so you don't get burned, and take the time to tune everything.

I'm sure hoping you're right Rprecision, I'm having SLP's single pipe kit installed on my 2007 M8 right now, and according to my dealer and SLP a boondocker is not required for this kit. I wanted a few more HP's to keep up with the newer sleds this year, and this is the ONLY engine mod I think i'll do this year, from readin on the forums it sounds like it's worth the cash, for the HP's and the sound!

my buddies M1000 dropped the bd box on the pipe, melted it, then blew up! can't get much worse than that...

I to have an 08M1K and this is the first sled and two stroke that I have ever owned. First season I rode it stock, last season I added the full SLP setup, RKT head, Koso A/F, and Boondocker box. I have had to tune for the original 08 fuel mapping and half way through the season they reflashed my ECU to the 09 fuel mapping which is not identical to the actual 09 M1K sleds so the powercommander will not work for your sled until SLP does a fuel map for our reflash. If you are a some what savey mechanic and pay attention to detail you will do fine with pipes and BD box. You will definantely need either A/F or EGT's, I would recommend EGT's cause I am not that happy with my A/F it is slow to repsond and gives miss leading info a lot of the time. There is a lot of hp to be gained by adding a pipe but its not without its headaches.

I added CPC twins from the start. Never road the sled stock.

My horror story started when I put the stock pipe and can on for a few weeks to see what I was missing. It was scary! The stock pipe made my sled feel slow and super lame! I saw HUGE power loss!

The CPC twins make GREAT power and I have really liked the Attitude Industries box. Not one lick of problems with either the pipes or the box.:face-icon-small-hap

Stock sucks!:face-icon-small-hap

A riding buddy has the full set up on his 08 M8, never a single problem.

I added the full pipe kit this year, used thier stuff in the past, you'll be fine, just run 91 :)

True that! The rest of you sound like a bunch of haters. I'm not sure how you installed your mods, but when you do this the rest of the engine needs to be adjusted and maintained to obtain quality and engine performance. You can't just snap on a mod and expect no issues. If you treat your engine well and give it the keep up that the mods deserve, there's no reason you should have a melt down.

I am sure that there are times when parts are junk, but I think 99% of the time it all boils down to the kind of guy you are:

If you just want to some parts on your sled quick and go, then you should ride stock. You are the guy scratching your head as to why it won't just run like the salesman said.

If you take the time and effort to research what you are doing, learn how to adjust, and install things well, I think you will be fine.

I see a lot half assed installs using crimp connectors, etc. These are the guys that are scratching thier head as to why things don't run and flaming different brands at the bar. You ask a few troubleshooting questions they look at you like a deer in the headlights.

My advice is pick a major mod like porting or pipes and stay away from the piece meal approach.

My best advice is: If you can't wrench well yourself, don't mod....

If you put a pipe or pipes on be prepared to do some tuning.......... period!! If you don't feel comfortable working on your sled then don't do it. I doubt your mechanic will be riding with you everyday. You need a good understanding of how the motor/fuel delivery works. Some sleds run great with pipes and don't need much attention. My old 900 cat ran great with a speedwerx pipe, but many sleds are finicky with exhaust mods.

I learned the hard way by rebuilding many motors over the years because of pipes. I didn't know enough about it back then. Live and learn.

BD Boxes & Twins

I Have An 05 M7 With SLP Twins & My Own Air Box & It Took A Little Bitt To Dial In But I Even Let My Wife & Boys Ride It Runs Like A Raped Ape No Troubles!!!!!!!! I Also Have A 07 M1000 With A SLP Single Kit That I Ran For
About a Year & A Half With A BD Box & It Ripped Till AC Flashed It !!!! Now I Have The 09 Flash & It Rips Again !!! In Late Spring I Put A Set Of CPC Twins On It And It Even Runs Harder Than The SLP Single Ive Got The NOS Capable Box On Both With A button To Add Fuel Only & It Only Took A Couple RidesTo Get Them Dialed In Now I Never Touch Them Good Luck... If You Know How To Wrench A Little Its Easy To Do!!!!

Thanks to all of you. I would say that I'm a moderate mechanic. Do all my own clutch work and gearing. I have had piped sleds in the past but they all had carbs. From what I'm reading the SLP setup with the power commander sounds the easiest. I guess I'm just gun shy. I blew it up last winter and it just had a can and y-pipe. (dealer told me I didn't need a controller ) Now It is back to stock with 09 reflash. Everyone in my group rides stock sleds (economic thing) So I'm doing all of my research on this forum and company websites. I have fun on the sled as is but if it can be better........
My riding style is boondocking 75% Hillclimbing 25% all in the deepest snow I can find.
Would my $$ be better spent on a Powerclaw. Challenger currently and I can only afford one (pipe setup or Powerclaw)

Thanks to everyone for any info and opinions

I picked up a Powerclaw for $400 and sold my Challenger for $350. It was kind of a no brainer. If you watch the swapmeet for a track and sell your old one you might be able to do both.

Start with getting yer dealer to reporgram yer ecu to the 09 fuel map. then go with whatever pipe setup you want just stay brand specific from the y right to the can. Remember they are designed together right? Yes spend the money on egts they are worth thier weight in gold. Im picky with my temps. if I c any more than 1250 I shut er down. Lots of fellas push this but to me its not worth it. the 1000's run great piped with the 09 fuel map. Singles do really well. I have a fuel controler inline but have it zeroed out with the D&D pipe setup. Good luck and spend the cash its worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
