homemade air intake?

to the people like Sandman who are running basically a stock airbox opened up under the hood, does anybody have much riding time on a setup like this? if so did you notice any effect on how it ran? positive or negative?

im asking cuz we finally got some snow here and it was over the hood fluffy powder and my vents on my m7 were plugging up and causing a bog all day. ive tried all the venting the plenum under the headlight tricks and what not but apperantly thats not enough so i was thinking about just pulling the plenums out from the hood and slapping a prefilter over the hole in the stock box. my hoods vented pretty good so i dont think it would be to hot under there.

intake

I took a alum. plate and bolted it fast over the intake plenum, just like ramrod did. But instead of pod filters ,I drilled the plate as full of holes as I could, with a hole in the middle for the sensor(like ramrods) then I took a sheet of UNI filter material (got it at the local moto shop) and used spray glue(scotch super 77) and put it over the holes. Done. cost-Maybe $20
I have had no problems with this setup. Its cheap, easy and VERY light.

I highly recommend putting holes, with prefilter over them, under the bumper on both sides of the nose. I made some and put them on before last weekend's revy trip and when everything else was icing/cloging up they stayed clear and got air right where it's needed.

Not impressed with bullseyes. I have them on the sled too and they clog up right away and they cost WAY, WAY to much. Flow rites work much better.

Btw -Ramrod ,very nice intake. , super clean!

ran mine for the second time on sunday, snow over the hood all day, did not bog one time! had sooooo much snow even had the back side of the hood covered. was thinking i would have been scooping snow off the front off the hood half the day if i hadn't changed the air intake:) could not be more pleased with how it performed...

Does this cause the sled to run lean? I ride in and above 9000ft. And I want to build an intake but I don't want to have to buy a Boondocker box just for an intake and can.

hey sandman, i tried your style of mod, and it bogged all day long in deep pow! I think it was an exhaust bog though, because when i cleared the snow away from the exhaust outlet it was fine, i'm running a super q can ( with stock intake it was never that bad) my question is, did you seal off your exhaust, so that it doesn't go back underneath the hood? if so how did you do it? anyone else?

I have noticed that the 09's have a rubber gasket around the outlet hole. I'm going to order from Cat as mine will bog in deep powder when I lay her on her exhaust side.

Cheers,
Dave

Heres an idea I came up with for powder, two approx 8in shorkels drawing cold air into the air box under the windshield. cut 2 tubes out of shop vac hose and drilled 2 holes behind speedometer and 2 in airbox snapped in hoses covered ends with pet screen

Great idea bandit why didn't i think of that let me know how it works in the pow

was it bogging only when you were rolling on the right? yes mine will still bog when your plugging the exhaust. my buddie with a m1000 has put a screen in front of the exhaust outlet to help push the snow away from the opening. not fool proof but works better than it did without it. rode in deeper pow yesterday, not one bog except when i was rolling hard right, plugging the exhaust. am gonna find out where he got the screen and will post it. am going to do mine this week.

hey sandman i tried your idea but just put prefilter over the stock hole in the airbox just incase, and i dont know if i just had a piece of crap prefilter or what but i didnt even get a mile from the truck before i had to give up as it was bogging so bad cuz the pow was getting under my hood and then sucking through the prefilter and fillin my box with water. it seemed like a good idea but it just didnt work for me, i ended up puttin the under hood plenums back in to get it to run right. i guess it would probably work if i put some frogskins or somethin over all the vents to keep the pow out but i dunno.

i run a speedwerx bra over the front 2 holes and pet screen on the next 2. this keeps all the snow out. for like $20 bdx makes a kit that covers all 4. didn't think to mention it, sorry. before i put on the bra and the petscreen twice had packed the front so full of snow it actually pushed the plenum hose off!!! so last year i ran the slp high flow intake. gets rid of the hose and lets the sled draw air from prefilters inside the hood when the outside intakes are plugged. figured since it ran fine when the intakes were clogged with the slp intake i would just eliminate the hood plenum. once you cover the front holes you should have no problem...

ya, i have pets screen on all 4 of the nose vents but i guess its not fine enough for the fluffy stuff we have right now. oh ya, i got a vent on top of my hood to that i think is letting snow through. oh well i think i'll run the stock setup for now and deal with the vent pluggin issue, wasn't near as bad as what i had today. maybe down the road ill see if i cant seal her up tight and give it another shot. thanks for all the info you've gave though.

Hey Sandman,

Was you afraid of melting your headlights? Is that why you installed the plate? I have gutted my hood and was looking at the exposed wires, light and gauge and was wondering if it would get to hot.

Has anyone just tired tieing in flowrites to the stock intake system on the inside of the dash? Doesn't mo-flow make something like this also.

skinner, yes the heat shield is to save the bottom of the lights/wiring. we plow the deep everytime we can. on unbroken trail 90% of the time. when your pushing snow over the hood all day long, at least my sled, gets hot!!! we have a few cats in our group that are running pods with melted headlights. if your not busting pow all day like we do you probably wouldn't have a problem, but when your hood is totally plugged, even behind the windshield, things tend to warm up a bit under the hood:) check out the pic and you'll see what i mean. don't see too many places for any air to get in, i'm even getting ready to pull my headlights to get more airflow, just trying to get a screen setup that will work. the more flow the farther i can keep on plowing before i have to stop...

That’s what I thought. I was looking at it and saw the potential. I will have to get me a plate made. I have a few pieces laying around. This time of year in Utah that is all that we have is the big fluffy powder days. I put on a BDX intake because last year when the pow was covering the hood it would bog out from the lack of air. Thanks

My home-made air intake

This is how i made my air in take... Took about 6 hours. The cost of all the plastic was $5.00, The cost of aluminum was $7.00, The cost of the pre-filter was $3.50, the price of mesh for vents was $20.00 total cost of the project was less than any aftermarket in-take i could buy. It also performs just as well!
