Help with steering post

I have a 2010 Dragon800 163 that i need to replace the steering post on and would like some info from guys that have replaced them. What do you have to remove to get to it. Do i have to pull the motor or just the air box and throttle bodys. How long do you think it takes to replace it. I am a automotive mechanic and have worked on all my own sleds in the past but havent even looked at this one yet.

I just went out an looked at my '09 RMK and I'm fairly certain your engine has to come out to unbolt the rod that runs forward to the linkage. Right now I can't turn my steering to see if it can be unbolted by turning to the left. Maybe unbolting the upper and lower steering post mounts, you may be able to angle it to unbolt that rod, but I doubt it.

All you need to do is remove the airbox only. Then use a crows foot on about 18" of extension to get the bolt loose.

These must be weak? I need to place mine as well. Glad to hear that the motor does not need to come out!!

What about the bolts that hold the shaft to the bulkhead.

You don't have to remove those. Like SB said, use a 9/16" crowfoot on a long extension (I have a 3.5 footer 1/2"-3/8" that works real well. The post will lift right out of the lower mount that bolts to the bulkhead.

Removing the fuel tank (which is easy) makes the job a piece of cake.

I'd recommend a heavy duty steering post from Wildchild. I have an extra one if you need one.

The bottom end of the shaft slips into the bearing on the botom.. no need to removed that... An impact gun comes in handy to loosen the lower nut... if you put some side load on the handlebars (turn them a bit to put pressure on the stud of the nut on the lower rod end that you are trying to remove from the steering post ) then the impact should pop it right off... remove the bearing/retainer at the top and she's out!

I did mine by cutting a old wrench in half and welding the open end to a three foot long piece of rod to hold the bottom, then a long extension with a swivel socket to remove the nut.only had to take the air box out to do it but it is a pain in the a$$ , I would replace it with the wildchild post so you dont have to do it again :face-icon-small-hap

Wildchild post?

I don't mean to steal your post but I was wondering were a guy would find a Wildchild steering post?

dragon900, Dont waste your time putting the stocker in. It will break on you. I put a wild child stem in 2 seasons ago. Strong as hell. I roll my sled over to get unstuck on hills. No probs with the chromally stem. About 1.5-2 hr install with a 6 pack. I will tell you from experience it sucks to get towed out when the stem breaks off and you dont have bars to hold on to. Ecspecially when you are way out in BFE. Happened to me at mnt. Shasta.
