UPDATE: motor is pulled and torn apart. Everything inside the motor is perfect......except center bearing on crankshaft is seized and does not turn. New engine on order.

Pretty early to assume the ball has been dropped, even for a guy with a major beef.
This is really unfortunate. Just think the customers Polaris would have if their quality was the best. That chassis though just keeps me coming back. And I have a really good dealer that will do compression and leak down tests a d replace top end for me before I get stranded somewhere. So a poor cylinder finish and engines failing already with crank bearing issues isn't enough? I guess we all have different tolerance levels. I am just very happy with my decision to change brands. I wish I could trust Polaris because I love the chassis but they burned that bridge for me. My bet is, I am not alone.

My 14 went to three different dealers, over a dozen visits to get the TPS right. I used to drop it off Monday and pick it up Friday while they attempted to get it right. My closest dealer probably shouldn't even sell sleds. They were trying but somehow missed it over and over again. Next closest dealer replaced worn clutch rollers but, that wasn't it, third dealer, now almost 2 hours away, managed to get it fixed.
I went for an Axys anyway. It blew up at 1100 miles. Replaced under warranty but at 1100 miles it had already needed two primary clutch rebuilds, a new motor, power valve cable broke, which was missed by the dealer that replaced the engine. They wanted to blame the 7000 rpm max with a new engine on the clutch again.
Bottom line, local support for Polaris in my area is pretty bad. Ski Doo is the best local dealer but I can't ride those wobble buggies. I have a great Cat dealer 1.5 hrs drive from home. Fortunately, I haven't need them much.
I was hoping the 850 was going to be the reliability revolution they claimed so I could jump back on an Axys. That isn't looking too promising right now so probably another new Cat next year.
I'm with you on the doo. How does that Cat handle compared to Axys. Must not be quite as nimble if your looking to someday get back on a Axys?
I actually love the way the Cat handles. I also love the 3" track and premium shocks that came on it. I can feel the weight difference though. The Axys is like a toy, so light, easier to get unstuck by yourself, easier to load/unload, easier to just throw around in the tight trees and a side hilling monster. Lighter is better IMO and the 30-40 lb difference is immediately noticeable. I also like the narrow bodywork, my Cat is just a little fat width wise and weight wise. I have actually taken it more technical places than I could get the Axys. Very predictable like the Poo and better traction from the 3" claw.
Thanks for your feedback. Sounds like a fun sled much like the Axys but a little fatter.
Hate to totally rain on all the superstitious mumbo jumbo and rumors of fiery hell back by stories from friends of friends who heard from a guy that the 850 is a 2007 rev in disguise. But here in the mountains of sw Montana there is a 850 alive and well with over 300 miles of aggressive riding. Other than the occasional hard start during the break in period (3/4 pulls) this charming little Polaris born on a full moon, is turning 8250 at 9500ft with 68 gram weights. Time will tell if I'm over optimistic, but until we have real people with real examples of engine failure try and relax. If there is a problem we will find out alot sooner if people spend more time riding and less time typing.
Not to rub it in, way OT in the Polaris forum but, the Suzuki motor in my Mtn Cat also has way better power than my 800 Axys ever did... which is nice.
When did cat switch to building their own? I thought they were building their own motors now?
Straight goods in the interest of information... we have had one 850 fail. Center crank bearing seized up (rider over the bars) at approx 8 hours. Tech was able to get it to release after it cooled down. Pulled engine down and everything looks great, other than the bearing itself. Oil line was fine, inside of the engine oiled well....best guess is that bearing just wasn't quite right. So far an isolated thing, we have many others running well. A couple have fouled plugs, other than that all good so far.
At this point, I am ok to write off 1 out of dozens as an anomaly. Polaris has parts, so it should be running in a reasonable time.
Lost the PTO piston in mine on Saturday.
Just under 1500 miles. A milestone for me.
I think the locating pin migrated and the ring spun. That sucks.
Hopefully you find the cause.
My 2019 850 is on its 4th engine in 400 km.
4th ones the charm I hope. Been going good since I got the 2020 crate engine!
Yay Polaris
