Grand Junction???

OK Ray, now you've let the cat out of the bag. Fess up-- those pics were really taken a long way from here. Nothing like that here in the desert. Right. No reason to sled around here.
Great Pics!!

Ironic that Obama had his rally in Clifton. Worst part of town by far.

The people that will most benefit from Nobama as president, live in Clifton!
opps...

the mesa has it's own yeti, known locally as BOHICA
and there were a couple sightings last year............

SHHHHHH!!!!! Only four Mnt Yeti sightings last year as I was busy building my own Meth lab and distribution center. Now that it's finished, its back to tearing up the Mesa this winter.

Seriously though, GJ IMO is one of the best places to live in the World.

GJ : Great Place to Live?

My sister works for the DA's office in GJ, she says the crime is about the same as the small towns around the area. Its just that being along the interstate that brings in all the drugs and the small town locals have to meet in GJ to pick up their stuff. Clifton is a pit, and the pedifiles all live in Fruita fyi.

Also GJ being the center of the western slope - of course your going to have alot more rehab centers for drugs and etc...just like when your injured severly you get airlifted to St. Mary's vs to a smaller town.

The thing I've noticed is if you live there you defend it and really like it, yet alot of people who don't live there don't like it.

This is a question for all the guys and gals local to GJ. I see that pretty much everyone rides the mesa but dont hear anyone talking about the other areas around here. The mesa is about 45 min from GJ and I can think of 7 other areas all within 45 min-1.5hr from GJ, and all with just as good if not better riding and snow conditions than the mesa, also by FAR way less people to. Dont get me wrong I myself ride the mesa a couple times a year and love it up there and once off the trail you rarely see to many other folks. I like some varity in the places I ride and its always nice seeing different scenery. So I was just curious how many of you venture away from the mesa and ride the other great areas around?

DeadCat.... I lived in Castle Rock and spent a great deal of time in GJ and have many friends from that area. A buddy of mine owns Piney River Adventures in Vail which is a perfect 1/2 way spot as you know. I can tell you from my experience working and living throughout the Colorado area GJ is nice and has grown exponetially the quality of life I think is second to none and I think the only other place I would put a close second is Fort Collins. Nice thing about GJ is you can enjoy what it has to offer without tripping over 10,000 peeps to do so like the Front Range side has to deal with. IMHO

curious what is it that you will be doing in GJ

well said! as far as other areas, yes! If you get bored w/ the 100's of sq miles on the mesa(aprox.800) then its just a jump to flattops-north of Rifle-Silt-NewCastle or just south of mesa--Kebler Pass/Crest Butte--access from Paonia. South of that 30min, Black Mesa little known secret. on , on , on

But the Mesa is pretty quiet on weekdays, and there's 4-6 places you can launch from. sat&sun favorite parking lots are full quick, but everyone is courteous.

Dec 1 last year, 1st big dump

I ride GM the most because it's usually the best snow conditions and it's so close. Have ridden Flattops , Kebler and Alpine Plateau/Lake City a few times. Maybe a trip to RE even thrown in there. But no questions, GM is my favorite. Nice that it's the closest too!:D Hard to argue with 800 square miles of riding and 420 (average) inches of snow per year. Last year I think we got close to 600 on GM.

The mesa does have great snow espically early in the year, but after the first of the year I usually head to other areas. You guys should check out red mountain sometime, more snow than the mesa ever sees lots of area to ride and good mixture of terrain.
Here are a couple pics from last year up there, the second one was the second week in may.

 You head elsewhere AFTER the 1st of the year??? Maybe you're riding a different "mesa". Prime season for the Mesa is Feb/March/April. Either way, you're missing out on the best part of the season up there. Perhaps you need someone to show you the better areas to ride? If you think Grand Mesa is flat, then you don't know much about the Mesa. Maybe you didnt' hear the 420 inches average. That's more than almost all other areas in the state. Typically, only Wolf Creek and Buff Pass have as much snow as Grand Mesa. But whatever suites you I guess.

Where do you park/ride on Red Mountain? Been tempted to go down there, but don't have much knowledge about where to go, and GM is always so good that my mind is easily made up. Might have to try RM this season. Any info would be appreciated.

Red Mtn

Oh due tell, please........everytime i drive over RedMtn, too often. I wonder where do they park, and ride up there. The only place i've found along that highway is Ophir pass road, and even it doesn't have a parking lot. Just that elect sub-station lot. I would luve to get a tour of that area, from a local.
I've never seen sleds up there, and when i was tooling around only snoshoers were to be found.....felt kinda out-of-place and oh yeh no sled tracks?? just mine:eek:

corpeleven... Ya I usually go elsewhere AFTER the first of the year. I know the mesa is great later in the year but other areas as just as good and in my opinion some are better, like you said personal preferance I guess. I dont think the mesa is flat at all, hidden valley has some pretty sick climbs back in there. I have been riding on the mesa for about 14 yrs so I know the mesa pretty good. Most of the time I unload just below bonham res. and go on from there. As far as unloading on RM, we usually unload right across the highway from black bear jeep trail and from there its endless as to where u want to ride. You can also go down to the ski area and unload, or ophir pass rd as powder patrol said, or you can unload at engineer pass, or go down to animis forks. Animis forks is the only area that really has a designated parking area, all the area are just little areas plowed out on the side of the highway and as powderpatrol said he never sees sleds up there so even though there isnt much parking it doesnt matter cause very few people ride up there. The only areas you will see people unloading is down by the ski area and at animis forks.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check it out this year. I assume the ski area you're talking about is Silverton Mtn? If I were to come down there, I'd probably want make the drive as short as possible, is the Engineer Pass area a good place to park? I've been over Engineer in the summer and it looked awesome for sleds. Much room to park there or do you have to unload and move? Also, the canyon on the way in looked like it would be SUPER sketchy for avy's. I guess that's what freaks me out the most about up there. What is your favorite access? Thanks.

Just for giggles, here's a couple shots from Grand Mesa last year.

corpeleven nice pics, the mesa sure had some sick snow last year I hope this year is the same. My favorite access is right across from black bear closer to the top than engineer. Up engineer ya it makes the hair on ur neck stand up going through there, we never climb in the canyon we just go straight thru there and get past it. There are lots of HUGE hills as I'm sure you are aware of but we get avy reports and conditions from the ski area before each ride up there and if its high we stay away. No one in my riding group has ever set off an avy up there but of course that doesnt mean it cant happen at anytime. We all have beacons shovels etc.. and would highly suggest haveing a becon if riding. As far as parking at engineer you can park right where you unload the plow it out enough to get 4-5 rigs there, they also do the same at black bear. To unload at black bear it's about 1hr 45min from GJ so about an hour more than it will take ya to get up on the mesa. So if ya ever feel like trying a new area for a weekend I highly reccomend giving it a try, and if ya dont like it you know where to go for some good riding the next weekend.

Thanks for the info Rev. We all carry beacon/probe/shovel, every time, all the time. No need to take a chance. I wouldn't even think of riding up on RM without. I think we'll make a trip down there this winter, maybe you can show us around??
