Schwarzenegger details $5.5B more cuts to budget

Facing a growing state budget deficit, that could reach nearly $24 billion, Gov. AP – Facing a growing state budget deficit, that could reach nearly $24 billion, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger …

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday proposed eliminating welfare for 500,000 families and terminating health coverage for nearly 1 million children to help close the state's ballooning budget deficit. But Dumb AZZ Obama Thinks he can make this work on an Even bigger scale!!!

The Republican governor's administration released details of $5.5 billion in cuts, a week after state voters defeated special election ballot measures. The new proposals are on top of those previously announced by Schwarzenegger.

Also among the cuts are stops to college fee assistance for thousands of students, fewer vocational training opportunities for state inmates and the elimination of $70 million in funds for the state park system.

The state is trying to close a $21 billion deficit, although the Schwarzenegger administration said Tuesday that its proposed budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year was outdated. The governor's finance team said the deficit now was projected to grow to $24.3 billion through June 2010.

The revised budget now includes borrowing from local governments that will have to be repaid and consolidating state boards and commissions. The administration wants to eliminate a welfare-to-work program that provides more than 500,000 families, saving $1.3 billion but forgoing $4.2 billion in federal matching funds.

Schwarzenegger also seeks to cut health care coverage for nearly 1 million low-income children under the Healthy Families program, saving about $250 million for the year. For the state's students, he wants to phase out a college aid program and reduce $335 million in funding for the University of California and California State University systems.

Schwarzenegger's previously proposed cuts include laying off 5,000 state government employees and cutting billions of dollars from K-12 schools, potentially shortening the school year by a week. The administration also was expected to announce another $3 billion worth of budget solutions this week.

The governor had warned of "cuts, cuts, cuts" after voters defeated last week's ballot measures.

State Assemblyman Roger Niello, a Republican, said during a joint legislative budget committee hearing that the state was "being driven by an economy that has absolutely collapsed. This is nobody's vision of what we wanted to be, where we're seeing revenue drops of unprecedented proportions."

The governor has said he would not support further tax hikes after agreeing to $12.8 billion in higher sales, personal income and vehicle taxes earlier this year. He said Tuesday that "if we don't make those cuts, I think we will face catastrophic consequences because the state would simply run out of money and get insolvent, which we cannot afford to do."

State Republicans also said they were not willing to raise taxes.

But State Assemblywoman Noreen Evans, the budget committee chairwoman, said she wants lawmakers to consider raising revenue rather than cutting so deeply into state programs.

"I will look under every rock and every leaf so that we can make sure women and children are fed and their medical needs are taken care of," Evans said.

The state Legislature's constitutional deadline to approve a budget and send it to the governor was June 15, but Evans said lawmakers were unlikely to meet it.

Wow.
I am stunned.
They are actually looking at curbing the welfare state.
WOW.
now if they cut all benifits to illigals, they would have a balanced budget.

Utah passed over 300 new laws a few weeks ago and in the top three was the IMMEDIATE deportation of some 100,000+ Illegal immigrants throughout the state. It was a huge deal.. I've heard there are numerous other states protesting that their senate do the same.. I agree, it would fix tons of things.. But i wonder how many AMERICAN families are going to have to suffer the loss of benefits that they actually need...

I grew up in this state and it has definetly gone done hill in the last 15 years!!Go Arnold it's a good start!!!!:beer; As for the illegals....Civil war?

and there in lies the problem.
Society in this country as a whole has lost it's ability to be self reliant.
People believe they need the government.
They don't.
It is like being addicted to drugs. You "need" them.
When you remove the drugs, there is pain.
When you have recovered, then and only then do you realize that you didn't need the drugs all along.

It is easy to simply go down and apply for assistance.
When in fact you should be looking for work, maybe you need to move to a new place, maybe you need a different carrer.

Self reliance, it's something we need to relearn.

But if they actually go get a job instead of realying on the gov't theres going to be a whole line of effects.. They wont be able to keep buying the flat panel tv's. = loss jobs,, etc... ha. For the most part I think ppl are abusing the system and are worthless. If you CAN NOT work thats one thing, but if your to fat, or your back hurts. suck it up.

Well said. They need to cleanse the whole system. Gov needs to grow a pair and cut everybody off. Then they can all go re-apply. I'm sick of people not having to earn a living. Their accomplishment for the day is going to the store and buying the days ration of beer and some smokes. My hard earned dollars go to pay for this and I've had enough. It used to be people would be a little ashamed to be on welfare, now they flock to it and abuse it. Laziness with a very strong sense of entitlement gets you what you want nowadays.

To a point I agree with that.
However,
If you are getting paid by the people, you should provide a service of some kind.
There are VERY few people on assistance that can't actual do work of some kind.
Even if it's just data entry.

I think they should make it so that if you can't hold down a normal job due to health or some other malidy, then you should be given assistance. However, you should also be given duties that fall within your ability to do.
Whether it is data entry, proof reading books, whatever. There are way just about anyone can contribute.
Anyone that I have EVER talked to that was actually disabled would love to be a productive member of society, even if just a little bit.

If you are able to work, GET A JOB.

I hadn't heard of that paticular one yet, I'll have to look into it. The most noise I heard was about the bar/private clubs (bout time!) and something about being able to carry a loaded gun under your car seat without the CCW permit. :D

Call me old fashioned, but isn't that what dads are for? It's ok now to be an unwed mother. It's easier to get divorced than to get married. There is no shame in this country anymore, and no morals.I'm no bible toter but this "if it feels good and it's easy, do it" attitude has to stop.

Ok good point.. I can't disagree with ANYONES arguments on this section.. BUT.. I've worked my a$$ off for the last 10 years in the oilfield. I love working and I take great pride in my work. Unfortunately there IS NO MORE work in wyo due to the cuts in natural resource production.. I've applied with job service and have probably filled out over 1500 different applications in the last few months.. there is ABSOLUTELY no work around here, and what work becomes available, already has a line of applications numbered in the thousands.. I had to go as far as applying for oilfield related work overseas and they told me i was #233,201 on the waiting list. So unfortunately I have to collect unemployment, my wife had to apply for foodstamps, and my kids are on meicaid because the COBRA insurance my last employer provided me with took my whole months worth of unemployment.. so what do you think a guy in my situation should do or how he feels when he hears that REAL American families are losing benefits the NEED... Without them my kids would be sick, my wife would have probably blew her brains out by now, and I would be in a vegetative state of depression myself.. My wife found a job 3 weeks ago making 350 bucks every two weeks but what is that?? When the mortgage will consume half of my unemployment along with all of her income... And this instance isn't just me, this applies to over 88,000 families throughout the state and an unrecorded number of self employed people who have just given up and thrown in the towel. We would surely all perish and bleed away if it wasn;t for what little assistance we get.. I see the whole welfare end as it pissed me off as well when I was a working man and seen the taxes draining my checks for the a$$hole living down the street to drive his SUV and 16 illegal children around and not do anything but sip corona all day and laugh at me as I strip my oil soaked greasers off before I walk in my house.. i;m right there with you, i'm simply referring to REAL AMERICAN families in a crisis situation that is out of their hands..

The deportation act did nothing. It was a state statute that allowed UHP and local police to act as ICE agents and effectively prosecute/deport illegal aliens without waiting for federal assistance or action. The problem is that the local police and UHP said they would not enforce the law, so its rendered totally useless...

And there is always work to be found for those who are willing...

UintaVentureBoys, if it wasn't for government interference, you would be employed right now. We would not be importing oil, lumber or any number of other things.

The federal government has gotten WAY too full of itself.

Ahh OK.... I did hear about this then. Wasn't Ogden the only police force that said they would participate in this? Police chief in Ogden also one of the politicians that pushed for it?
