Flatlanders are either darn die hard.... or darn stupid!

I'm stuck in Ft. Worth Texas (MN born and breed) and I managed to sink about another 3 G's in my sled this year.

What do your neighbors say when they see you working on your sled??? or do you leave it north??

I enjoy the ride out.
But the ride back sucks!

We always try to make our trips as long as possible. Back in the ole days, we did a 14 day trip through out the west. Yes, even at 14 days we didnt want to come home.

I get a couple of good days locally and one or two trips west each year. It seems like every time we get good snow locally, three days later it warms up and melts. It sucks.

.................
I really feel truly blessed when I read thread about poor flatlanders riding "ditches"??????? Sorry, gotta run, 5 of use are leaving on a 2 day trip to a resort 71 miles from my back door!!!!!

Wow! 71 miles. We flatlanders ride that far to have coffee break in the morning, and ride another lunch destination, and about 50 miles back home. 125 miles, just an EASY day, and time to get back for happy hour specials. LOL.

Of course it helps to have snow too. :(

Except for the fact that 75 mountain miles is more fun that 750 trail or ditch miles. :)

hit the nail on the head there! i don't mind the trip out but coming home always bites no matter how long you have been gone, how bad the snow was, or how many things you now have to replace on the sled. its just getting out there into god's country.
i thought about moving a few times but then summer rolls around & i love the good ol midwest!

No argument there. I love the mountains, and especially the Togwotee area. Couldn't resist making the contrast. ;) But not all riding in MN, at least, is ditch riding. We have many thousands of miles of wooded trails, and lakes too. Ditches , in my area, are sometimes a necessary evil to connect to other portions of trails.
We have a lot of private property owners, with what could be very desirable for crossing on a trail, but they won't agree to a trail easement, so a mile or so on a ditch becomes the only alternative.

Funny you mention that. I had it down here between deer season and Christmas to do the major makeover on it and I got a lot of interesting looks from neighbors. A few from back in the northland saying "I haven't seen one of them for a while"

Wow - we are anywhere form forty minutes to four hours away from ANY type of riding you could imagine or desire. We like to mix it up a bit :) lots of mountians, boondocking through the trees, racing the rivers, or cruising the swamps (not so much into the ditches) Sad thing, is when you look at the cost - I have to feed at least three sleds and a truck everytime we go out... come to think of it - other habits may be cheaper - but they sure aren't as fun!!! Bring on the snow!!!

Im a flatlander and I get 3000+ miles per season. I can ride from my front door and no such thing as off-limit areas. If you can get there then youre allowed to ride there. Only time sled has seen a trailer was when it was on its way home from the dealer. A bad winter is from Dec-March and a good one from Nov-May.

3 years ago, I was fortunate enough to make 5 trips out west and had a blast. Later that year in October, for craps and giggles, I sat down and figured out how much sledding cost me that year. I won't do that again. when you can express your fun in terms of "annual percentage of income", it takes the fun out of it. So now I just whip out the plastic and enjoy it for what its worth. Heck, you got all summer to pay it off.

Originally from the midwest when there was actually snow there (remember when? ). Was a 3-4000 mile a year rider. Made the move to Jackson a few years back.

Togwotee- 1 hr
Cliff Cr- 40 min
Greys River- 50 min
Commisary peaks- 1 1/2 hr
Back yard- gated fence to unlimited ridable US Forest land
05 RMK - 8347 miles

Feelin kinda blessed.

Do miss the midwest summers at times, especially the boatin on Tonka and the chain. Now it's backcountry Jeepin during the shorter summer here.

First tracks this year- October 7th, maybe ride til late May or even into June (up high)

Sorry about your snow conditions back there. It's always good to see Mn plates out here, enjoy your trips when you get them, at least the people that make the trips get to ride.

yeah a bunch of lucky bastages that get to make the trip. Maybe in a couple years it will be possible for me. gotta get settled into having a house a wife, kid and one on the way first. Once I get all that figured out I can get money to drive west! Uhtil then I have the UP and hopes that MN gets snow. And if we ever do boy do I have some play spots lined up.

"Road Trip!"

Those words get me as excited today as they did 20 years ago. The difference is the destination. I like to road trip out to Vegas once or twice a year. Because its fun, but not a passion. Its our passions that drive us. Passion and the need to make a living often are at odds with each other.

For years we (my wife and I) thought that the ocean was our passion. We bought the Boat lived on an Island in the Florida Keys. As great as it was, the mountains of our youth were calling us back. To make a long story short.
The mountains of Colorado are our home and we could'nt be happier. Snowmobiling is the winter part of that. Hope you are happy where you are.

I do miss the warm days spear fishing, especially on mornings like this one
-26 degrees fahrenheit at 7am. "where's my bathing suit?":face-icon-small-sho

Good thred!

Yeah, I'm feeling a little depressed about my addiction right now too. Nearly 20 grand into a sled worth less and less by the min. and no Western plans yet this year. My buddies calling telling me how good the snow is and me sitting here typing with my arm in a sling.
Boy, I better get a Revy fix in the spring.

It's a sickness in all reality, I now have 2 mountain sleds living in MN.QUOTE]

Its funny when it snows here at home, all you see are long track mountain sleds and the closest "mountains" are across the state in the Black Hills. Figure for the 2-3 times a year we ride ditches, the long track is at least rideable, but you cant really take a short track ditchbanger out to the mountains unless you like to shovel.

I remember it being 85 degrees cutting grass on my lawn tractor in Florida daydreaming about riding in powder. Told my neighbors I was moving to Alaska and they told me to get proffesional help. The only help I need now is trying to keep up with my kid when we ride......:D

Heh, closest mountains are few hundred miles south of me.

I ride from my back yard, out onto the street, down the road, and into a field, on to another street... then I either go ditch bangin or trail riding. I went River running for the first time the other day.. after a couple min 90mph seems slow.... When I'm on the ProX 50mph seems like 30km/h... I live in well technically at the top of a river valley, so while there's no mountains we have some good hills with very technical trails through them... which is it's own kinda fun..

Go out of the valley, and it's Alberta plains.. you can see forever.. well 'cept for the trees..

I've used my sled to go grocery shopping, to work twice.

The worst part is having a blast on the sled then hopping in the car and forcing yourself to drive it like a car, not a sled..

Yes, it's true, we are insane. I have a 2004 sled with roughly 800 miles on it.(tach reads 500) I bet less than 100 of them are from riding here in SD. It's only actually been ridden for 3 years and each of those years we took a quick 2 day trip out west. Going to go back once more this year for 3 days.

That's enough of this crap. Next year we're going to spend about week in West Yellowstone and a couple 3 day trips to the big horns or snowies. Like was said before, the ride out is fun, but usually the ride home is tired and quiet. I'm still tired from it and it's been 20 days LOL.
