Eyre Basin in Taylor Park???

Last year I was looking for info on how to get to Pearl Pass when GBCB brought up Eyre Basin. I found Eyre Basin last year by heading over the ridge north of Italian Mountain but could not clearly see a way down. Does anyone know the way down from there? We checked down a long draw close to the top but about 3/4 of the way down it looked like it dropped off pretty steep and we tried another gully a little farther north but lower in elevation and it seemed to close up in the trees and get steep at the last little bit. We also could not find the trail up from the bottom. Has anyone been down in there and how did they get in there.

It's in the woods!

The only way I was able to ride this was following a set of tracks. There's an abandonded logging road on the ridge of the lower east side of the basin in some deep dark timber. It's probably still shown on the quad map. You can see it easily on Google Earth. iIt might be hard to find dropping in from the top. You might look for where it dumps out to the upper Taylor river and try riding uphill to figure out where it enters the bowl (I remember the road being steep!).
As for Pearl Pass/Middle Brush, I'm elk hunting up there next weekend so I'll scope it out for you- but I'm still pretty confident that the only way to make it is up and West from the Friends' hut and crest out to the north of Carbonate Peak.

Hey GBCB, Thanks for the input again. By any chance can you remember much about when you were in Eyre? Did you go down a big Gully that narrowed as you went and had lots of trees the farther down you went? As for Pearl if you get to the top of Pearl can you take some pics looking towards Star Pass? All I need to know is where I can drop in off that ridge on the Pearl Pass side of Star Pass. I've seen a few pics but more zoom would help if you get a chance. Do you still ride out that way? If you do maybe we should meet up this winter and share some of each others knowledge.

You Betcha!

I'll be happy to take a pic for you, but it'll probably be from between the Carbonate Peak and Timbered Hill saddle. Hopefully it will show you what you need to see.
I rode the Eyre loop about 15 years ago on an AC 440 Prowler during spring conditions. Rode solo- wearing plastic tele boots and the skis strapped to the tunnel in case of a terminal sled stickage- a lot braver back in the day!
Like I said, if the tracks weren't there I never would have done it. If you're ever up in Crested Butte, give me a call at 209-0553 and I can Google Earth it for you and it will become amazing clear on how to ride this from the top.
Just back into mtn sledding in the last couple of years- still a bit timid.

Cheers,
Grant

If you can google earth it that would be great. I looked and did not see it clearly but once you know its there it makes a difference. I will be out that way a bunch this year and will try to hit you up to see if you want to come ride. We are a little timid also, we do not like to mess with stuff that will kill us!!!!
