Ecoboost ???

Hey guys, I'm not a premium member on here so I can't read the entire discussion on here about them. I'm thinking about a new f150, I've made my mind up on that, but unsure what engine, I don't want a diesel so don't waste your time telling me about them. Mostly for daily driving, not hauling anything heavy in the back, pulling 17 ft fishing boat, 21 ft camper(4000 lbs) 4 place open across the Dakotas in winter, and occasionally my Skidsteer and attachments on trailer(8000 lbs) not far though 20-30 miles tops. I've accomplished all this with my current 05 f150 super crew with 5.4 just fine. Rode in a ecoboost with a trailer on the back and was impressed, just wondering who has one and if you like it???

Love mine. Got it in November. Only like 5000 miles on it but so far I'm impressed. 1500 of those miles are towing 5000-7000 lbs. Tows like an older diesel. Very similar to my 01 and 03 Cummins when they were stock. Doesn't need to downshift much. RPM likes to be 2500-3000 RPM for pulling on steep grades. 6 speed tranny works perfectly. One of the few automatics I've liked.

This truck tows a 3 place enclosed better then my 04 5.3 GMC pulled a 2 place open. I absolutely hated my 5.3 GMC. No torque. Constant downshifting and crap mileage. The Ecoboost is the opposite of the 5.3. Tons of low end grunt and no downshifting with better mileage.

I almost bought a new Cummins or Duramax but drove the Ecoboost and was impressed. Its nice to have a truck that tows great but rides nice. 3/4 and 1 tons just beat the crap out of you. Not to mention the truck is way cheaper then a diesel.

The way diesel prices are how much extra the diesel truck costs, I wouldn't buy one unless I was towing 10k plus all the time. And thats coming from a guy who loves diesels. This truck redefines towing with a gasser. Makes even the 8.1 Chevy or especially the POS Ford V10 look silly.

I do recommend air bags to get rid of the sagging though. The Firestones work great mine.

Fuel mileage isn't overly impressive. But real close to my Cummins. Gets around 16 MPG on the higway at 75 MPH with two dirt bikes in the back. I have gotten as high 23 MPG on slower two lane trips. Does good in town at 16-18 MPG. About 11 to 13 MPG towing 5-7k.

My truck is an FX4 Supercrew with 3.73s and larger 275/70R18 BFG ATs and leveling kit. Truck weighs just a touch over 6000 pounds.

I've never been a big Ford guy but I think The EcoBoost is a big hit. My brother has one and can't say enough about it. He too wanted a smaller daily truck that could pull. He had a Duramax before and agrees that his EcoBoost doesn't pull like the Duramax but it's a good trade off. He did tell me that his MPG towing wasn't great but it's part of that trade off.

Took my buddies new ecoboost and 4 place enclosed up on top of the Grand Mesa (10K) this winter. I was really impressed. Pulled the hill fine, Not like my Duramax but no where near as enemic as my old f150 with the 5.4.
If I were to buy a new truck it would be an ext cab Ecoboost long bed, with air bags and a sled deck.

Glenn, what is the GVW on the door tag?

Mine is a 7200 GVW. I didn't think it was worth it to get the max tow. It seems like the only thing you got were the ugly tow mirrors.

The ratings are close enough that it didn't matter to me.

I've towed the same exact same trailer with a stock 05 Duramax that I tow with my Ecoboost and didn't really see much difference. Duramax might run 500 RPM less sometimes, but who cares.

When diesel was 90 cents a gallon more this winter, I didn't miss my Cummins at all.

Also, this is my first Ford. I'm not really a brand loyal kind of a guy. I've had to two GM trucks, two Dodges, a Jeep and a Ford. I really haven't liked Ford trucks since 1979, but the Ecoboost really changed my mind on Ford trucks.

Heres a picture of the truck and the trailer I normally pull. And the 4 place I've pulled.

Ok ecoboost? Because it gives the economy a boost when you buy one?,Or is it boosted as in turbo or super charger? orGo green?

Sweet rig. But I question the ability to run a sled deck with two sleds safely.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it with airbags or helper springs.

I would probably opt for the 6.5 ft box to do a sled deck though.

Your even within the ratings easily if you opt for the max tow or heavy duty payload package.

My truck weighs about 6200 lbs with me in it empty.

Max tow GVW is 7700 GVW and HD Payload is an 8200 GVW.

Their payload capacites are 1840 and 2310 lbs respectively, as per the Ford site.

This topic gets beat up pretty hard here. It's not just the payload but also the axle strength (full vs semi floating), brakes, steering components, etc. If you think I'm full of it ask the guys who sell the sled decks.

I still wouldn't hesitate to do it. Save some coin over the diesel and better mileage, power and ride then any gas 3/4 ton.

I will agree that it will get over the GVW pretty quick. That really only matters if you get stopped :face-icon-small-hap I think an Ecoboost with load range E tires and a set of airbags would drive just fine with a sled deck. But a 3/4 or 1 ton will always give you more confidence with that much weight on there. Why won't Ford let us have a Ecoboost in the 250 and 350 as a gas option? That would be a really nice truck!!!

With airbags you'll be fine with a deck. I have a deck on my 09 Sierra half ton and the truck does a great job! Can't even tell the sleds are up there!

I agree. You have to remember they are not trying to replace the diesel engine with the ecoboost, they are just giving you a better option over the normal v8 gas hogs. More power/torque plus better mileage, I dont see anything wrong with that although i would like to see better towing mileage. I would buy an ecoboost in a heartbeat if I were to buy another truck but im not using it with a sled deck but i think it would pull the 4 place enclosed without a problem.

I have 28000 + miles on my 11 ecoboost and wouldnt trade it. No its not a diesel but its the best gas rig on the market. I towed my 20' inclosed trailer with 3 sleds all winter and never missed my cummins once. I could tow long pulls better in my ecoboost than I could with my 07 3500 megacab cummins. I liked the dodge but I LOVE my ecoboost. 16mpg on freeway at 75, 22mpg on 2 lane hwy at 55-65 and 15.5 around town towing a small inclosed work trailer. I average 3 mpg better with the ecoboost than I did with my diesel, the truck is less money, and the fuel is less. Wont haul and pull the manly loads of a diesel but for the 5 to 7000lb jobs, cant beat it. My only regret is that I didnt step up and get the Lariet, just have the XLT.
