Cutting Outer edge off ski?? anyone?

Well I did the bigger cut from spindle bolt to the rear center of the ski and i will say it helps to side hill, but i found that it turns the ski away from your side hill, and when you land from a bounce the skis want to dive left or right depending on what ski has touched 1st. This is on an apex with stock skis in 2 ft of powder.... Result... dissapointed...

Well the smaller cut I made on my powder pros made me very happy. Not in good powder but in 12" or less, tracked up or setup snow it made the sled lay up the hill noticably easier. 10 minutes in the trees and I had to stop and kick myself for not doing this last year when I got the skis.

It also made the sled set into a hill with less angle from the sled, so I can get hooked in and side hill without laying the sled over so far.

Carving, side hilling, down hill turns... all improved.

I switched the skies on my 09 xp from left to right have put one 900 miles this way. It seems to turn and carve better but not worth the A arm costs. I have bought more frontend parts this year than I ever have the ski does not ride over any obsticals on the outer edge just digs into the plastic. I have a extra set of new skies I am going to cut but they will be on the right way.:decision:

Like R 8 N said, I did like them overall. My finding were as follows: first thing I noticed early in the morning part of the ride when the snow was dry and powdery was when I was coming down hill the sled dipped easier to the low side (I.E. the sled dipped into holes in the terrain on the low side easier so I had to keep on my toes about this a little more). The second thing I noticed was that as the day progressed, temperatures rose, and the snow got wetter and thicker, the ski cut really started to shine. The cutting into a sidehill was effortless in thick chewy snow. This will definitely be the new ski of choice for Spring.

Happy with my cut. I find they push a little more on the trail, but I try not to spend too much time there anyways.

Off trail, the cut is worth it. Effortless sidehilling and you can throw the sled around a lot easier, even on mashed potatoes.

Can you explain this a bit more. first you said it helps to side hill and then you said it didnt. Just want to clear this up because i am thinking of doing this tomorrow

well i took off some simmon gen ll's and put back on the stock yamaha skis and they were cut, so its a big change in the two skis. I like how easy, too easy, no floatation in the deep snow, it was easier to side hill with the cut, but it made the sled harder to ride with the landing and darting to one direction. The problem is the skis barelly touch now with boost but when they do come down i dont want to dart one way or the other..... too dangerous on the apex with big boost... JMO
I'd be happy to ship them to someone to try.... u pay shipping

I cut my Gen II, started with just the out side edge 1' in from the inside of the rolled edge up to the spindel, ( use 1" masking tape as a templet ) worked good. So then I cut it up to 3 " in front of the spindel, got even better. Then I went up to the point where the front outside edge starts to transition into the tip, YeHa! now this ski will carve, but it still would not let the front end sink enough on a down hill pow turn, so I cut off the entire inside edge of the ski up to the same point as the outside edge. Now the ski will sink and let you control the pitch of the turn, but you still have the wider tip to give you the lift you want. It also reduces the steering effort in deep snow when your going slow and trying to pick a tight line in the trees. I started this mod on my Rev 159 highmark extream. Then I did it on my friend's XP 154, It's a great mod and simmions should just build'em like this, The XP responded really well because the Gen II is just to aggresive for this sled. I'll try to get some pix up. :light:

Hello, Sorry I`ll have to post pics later but last year I did a carl`s type cutout on my 6.9 Pilot skis on my Rev Summit not sure if I noticed a difference in sidehilling the first cut I only cut 1/2 of the outter shelf off from the ski bolt back and shaved 3 inchs off back of ski and oh, skis are swapped from left to right previously, just a few months ago I decided to cut the whole shelf off from the ski bolt all the way back doing a radical cutout on the 6.9pilots also have them moved to the narrow offset. The biggest thing I noticed is it doesn`t drop the sled back down on both skis as your turning out at the top of a climb or uphill sidehill turnout situation. That feels more comfortable

been riding spring set up snow and haven`t noticed better side hilling ability but most of that could be me I have a hard time getting the sled to lay over especially in a downhill off camber situation can`t seem to get it into a powerturn and power into an turn around type uphill maneuver, Damn!!

I think light weight 37inch A arms for narrower ski stance and would probably help me out better along with the strick diet I have put the sled on this summer, Lol Oil injection is already gone along with a few other mods and more to come.

Not sure if im reading this right but ive been wondering if a guy cut 1 side of the gen 2 off at the outside ski runner , all the way from front to back. Would you still have a decently wide ski that would be flush with the spindle allowing the sled to be pulled over easy?

I have been doing some thinking (uh oh) lol, since reading this thread I have my 6.9 pilots cut out pretty good and I decided to reinstall the original 04 Rev Summit skis since they have No outside shelf at all front front to rear, and are pretty much the same wideth for floatation than the pilots

I know they probably won`t handle better than the pilots on the trail but I`m not to worried about the trail. just want my sled to sidehill more effortlessly.

The pilots to me don`t turn that well on the trail either probably cause they have been swapped and there is no carbides to the outside anymore.
