Cutting Outer edge off ski?? anyone?

Nice Vid. I know Burandt walks on water, but I like to see that he falls off at least once in a while.

I wish the camera angle was a little bit higher up into the field of vision instead of at the front of the sled. I get a little claustrophobic when I can't see forward that well.

Interested to see how your cuts work Matt...sounds like they kick *** in crusty snow:face-icon-small-win

I gotta admit I like the cleaner look of the other cuts, but if it works it doesn't matter how it looks.

I have a few other questions about this after thinking about this a good portion of the day.

1. What does this do to the sleds handling coming down a steep grade when you are forced to make an agressive turn one way or another causing the sled to pitch to one side or the other? You say that it wants to come over easier... If its too much this could prove problematic on steep downhills after long climbs.

2. Many people have to trail ride to where they mountain ride. How does this effect trail manners of the ski's specifically in tight twisty corners?

3. What does this this do in setup snow?

4. Does any weigh their ski's both before and after to make sure that the same amount of material was take of each? How are you guys cutting these? Just measuring and cutting with a grinder or skill saw or sawzall? I would think you would want to take the exact same amount of material off each side.

I understand the concept behind the mod, but it seems to me that its a situational mod that really only benifits one style of riding. An could negatively effect other area's of riding.

I am thinkin it is not going to be a problem.. i like how well down hill turns are now.. it dips a little faster.. less force

No. Change on the trails... handles like normal

3. What does this this do in setup snow? Well.. it keeps the tips up.. turns when you want to turn.. I had only had one kick back.. so far.. not a big deal would of happen to un cut ski as well

Lookin at both cuts.. the same material was cut off.. if not maybe off by a gram or two. using to cut Sawzall..

If this doesn't work, someone owe's me some skis :)

If it doesn't work as well as it should, I'll go to the spindle bolt. I'm going to bring my skill saw with me. LOL

Previous owner did this to Simmons Gen II's on my Apex Mtx.
When you turn out on a hill climb you can feel the sled lean into the hill like it wants to sidehill. TonyG

was thinking of doing something like this on my gen2
any more pics of different gen2s cut?

cutting them dogs

Saw this thread awhile back and thought 'd give it a try.

Matt got it right. Just trimmiing a little plastic isn't the idea. Cut it more and more.

On my SL skis, I drew a line from outside back corner of steel ski shoe to center of ski in back.l lopped it off with jig saw while on sled, smoothed it off.
Did powder pros / slp stgraight line tracking which I run now on my M8 and stock 05 vintage skis on my little M5.

So what's it do:

in deep deep powder........you won't notice much, judged by that you might be a nay sayer

When you have a foot or less of snow it allows you to effortlessly counter steer when you tip the sled over, cause when you counter steer you're trying to stick the outside back edge of that skis hard into the snow.........again in bottomless fluff no big deal. Trail riding to the hill when there's mininal soft snow outside the track, makes it way way more fun and effortless to go to the outside on the on the turns and flip the sled up on the inside ski and carve the turns....noticably easier in this situation. Worried about loss of control, don't, flat works better, steering in the turns up on that insdie ski same or better. going down a powdery slope and initiating the layover and turn back up the hill, easier, better than that......dinking with that issue the other day I could do it in less snow with ease than a no cut M7, we traded back and forth, better with cut skis. Trail riding at 60 mph ?? its a non issue that I can tell.

Down side............worries the crap out of some of the other guys in my riding group that don't feel good about experimenting with mods. Will always worry the dressed up sled guys, does look funky.

The guys that are not early adapters or HATE running anything but stock
will really be bugged by cut skis!!!! That makes it even more fun sometimes!!

Gotta take my skis off and cut some more off. Think I noticed a big difference
with mine because my TNT only weighs 365 lbs and near 50 lbs is off just the front end compared to a stock 800 XP Summit.

But I also cut my skid plate down to about 7" wide under the a-arms so that doesn't hold my uphill ski up either anymore. Cats have had maybe 4" of plate between their a-arms I think forever. And they seem to be the standard to shoot for.

Good Luck

Anyone have any pics of cutting the Gen II's down. I seen a few people talking about cutting the whole outer edge down but haven't seen any pics.

Well, you guys got me think... why not try it. So I went ahead and did the carl's cut today on my powder pros. Took a whoping 30 mins to do both skis and they turned out very well IMO.

Not as agressive of a cut but if this mod helps at all in setup / heavy snow then it's the perfect ski for were I ride. I'm riding tomorrow so we will see what happens.
