Cooke City Avy Death

Yes we did make it out ok thank God huh. We were so lucky. Ha. There was no danger at all there Idk know what the hell u guys are talking about. I was riding in and out of the trees and the hill already broken loose plus there wasn't enough snow to even bury a guy and it wasn't evn steep. I stayed off the open slopes and neither of us even gave thought to it even sliding again. Sure we saw slides up there and we knew avi danger was high but there was no risk.

What I am in utter disbelief is,
WTF were u idiots thinking by even being close to these slopes at Lionshead or Cooke, @#%k!!!!!!!!

Thats pretty much what i think. I was up over the 29th and 30th at cooke had a blast....saw alot of stupid Sh!t going on with people causing slides high marking. Sorry but Really no excuse for it. Not only climbing chutes that shouldn't be climbed till the snow stabilizes out but....two guys on the hill stuck at the same time and the rest of the group sitting right at teh base of the chute.....

Tape a picture of your family to the inside of your goggles or something, you got a lot to loose.

Ride smart...practice it don't just preach it.....

All I got to say is that it can happen to anyone at anytime. Yes, I do agree that you need to be familiar with avy prone areas, avy runout zones, etc. Just remember though, you can have all the training in the world and still find yourself in trouble.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense or I am rambling on. I guess it's reality just setting in. Jody's son just arrived home with him a while ago and the Fire Dept. escorted them into town. Jody was a FireFighter with a big group of us.

i think signs would help some.the coppers or club here put up orange polls by a dangerous area.came back at the end of the day and not 1 sled went past those polls.maybe a big orange high avy danger sign at the trail head?

We have to start watching this ourselves and lettin people know their in a bad area or your going to see a big USFS "Cooke closed due to avalanche warning" sign.
People use your heads !!! I don't care if you just drove 20 hours and the weekend costs you 2500.00 bucks and its the first big snow...stay away from slide prone areas !

Sorry you are wrong!! you would have to place a orange pole every 500ft..if you have ever rode here you would understand...we see enough orange poles around here(through out Montana ) they use as private property markers!!! dont mark up our forest..with orange...there are avalanche reports handed out every morning at every establishment..in Cooke READ THEM!!! sorry to say the rider that was killed was in a very very bad spot the only time we play in that area is in the spring when its safe!!..if you watch the avalanche video ..its pretty obvious that this is a very avalanche prone area thats why there are no trees!!Im surprised his whole group didnt get buried!!! sorry to get on the soap box but here in Montana there taking every reason to shut down more of our ridding areas..and having to mark up every hill.. they will just make it all wilderness and end all riding!!..this is not Oregon..and please dont try to make it like Oregon.... THANKYOU!!

The sad thing about this is someone lost their life. Was it because of lack of education, can't happen to me attitude, to many sleds on a hill at once or a momentary lack of judgement? Doesn't matter. Signs won't solve anything. I have ridden Cooke since 85 and back then we would hammer that area trying to get to the top of LuLu over and over, making many passes just to get up there when the snow was deep. With what we ride now it is a walk in the park. Why we never got buried is beyond my understanding. I quit going up that way years ago and use the trail through the trees to get to the backside of LuLu. Until we as adults start making the proper decisions there will continue to be these tragic deaths. Take note. a hill with scraggly trees on it is a very good place to stay away from. That is the only sign that should be needed.

Snowmobiler,

Your thinking doesn't help the cause. This entire country is in the nanny state that it is in because people want to control every aspect of life. If somebody wants to ride a motorcycle w/o a helmet, they should be allowed to. But, no, somebody got killed and then somebody else figured that we need a law to prevent that from ever happening again. At some point we don't need any more friggen laws, it's called personal responsibility.

You want to put up signs and poles at every hazard in the back country? Good Luck with that. It will be way easier to just close off the entire forest and outlaw our sport just so you can be safe. Once again, I am sorry that another person died, but it will always happen. No different than people will always die in traffic accidents.

Isn't this spot more to the left and above that mining shack? Not the cabin on the Lulu trail but that shack more to the left. Maybe I am wrong. Either way, with all that new snow it was not a good place to be. Cooke is dangerous but putting up signs is not the answer. We don't need all the safety nazis in there and shutting the whole place down. Safety is in your own hands and is not anyone elses responsibility.

12-15 mins is not fast at all especially given that his boot toe was sticking out.

Have you ever dug a 4 or 5 foot deep hole in avy debris big enough to pull a guy out of? I haven't. I did have to dig just the back half of my sled out of avy debris one time and it took forever and it wasn't that deep.
