castlegar area

Thanks kootenaycat. I figured they would be shutting down soon, which is why I asked, we won't go in there if they are still using it, so many other areas to ride that we don't need to ride in their ski areas. I agree, I would hate to see a good spring riding area lost to bureacracy. Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call.

Good Info from kootenaycat, it would be a shame to see such a good area (and access to other areas) get more regulated than it already is. i had heard that BRC already tried to close access to their area this year.

Great weekend sledding in the good old Kootenay’s! Saturday was a hoot went out with a group of 6 hooked up with 3 more up top Sunday ahh not so great for riding wind, snow, fog 8" fresh powder up top at the cabin but made for a good ride Monday the area was untracked all day lot's of playing in the wide open. Some hills are looking a bit wind loaded and unpredictable so played it safe and had a blast busting out small drifts. When it's this nice hard to stop and take pic's.

Sunday's Ride

DSC01222-1.jpg

Got to love the Kootenay's.

Got out to Gold Range Cabin it’s in good shape nice to see the users are really respecting it and on Sunday’s ride with the fog and snow blowing hard it come in fast was sure nice to sit there with the fire going warm up a bit dry out some gear. I will definitely be up in the summer and replenish the wood pile whatever else the place needs. I was told it’s no longer a Club Cabin but now user maintained? The trail up was good some rough spots great hills and plenty of play areas when Avy conditions are getting high. I know the locals at one of the the trail heads and park in there driveway good not worry about the trucks and stuff getting ripped off. I guess last year 4 sleds were stolen from town then parked in the bush up top and left until spring, one of the owners of the sleds somehow tracked them down brought them out, lucky guy’s.
Ya I really wanted to get up Erie Creek and over the top to drop into Barrett Lake this trip but Avy conditions were a bit much and not sure if Slide Creek let loose yet.
Boy’s are off to Yami Fest this weekend in Revy not sure if I am going it is really hard to make a run to Revy looking over your shoulder every 10 seconds for other riders coming at you especially when you have some of the best untracked snow and powder in the Kootenay’s. Ya and still snowing I hear, Mom Dad own the Reno Motel in Salmo get an up date every day!
Well take it easy Koot we’ll have to hook up on the trail one day.

Did you guys park at Archibald? We've never had a problem parking for the day there, or anywhere here in the Kootenays for that matter! :) Apparently the cabin up top has always been on private land  and the owners (Kelly Timber) keeps threatening to burn it down. Hopefully they leave it alone, it has helped many people out of the weather when it comes in.

Let me know when you are in the area next time, hopefully my sled will be running 100% then!

Ya Archi Ck not far from my place near town, when the snow is low in the valley we ride out from the house across the hi way, it’s sweet. Yes Kelly Timber I hear owns the land let people use the cabin I thought mabe was a club cabin guess not it's kept up well, I think it has been there about 17 years be ashamed if it ever got destroyed, I spent a few nights on the mountain in the winter 2 different times with no shelter, It’s not fun Just good to know when you’re out in the back country shelter and warmth is not far away and it sure came in handy last Sunday.
Actually I have never had a problem in the Kootenays in and around Salmo & Castlegar areas “touch wood” with thieves, you hear allot stuff and makes you take the right precautions and all should be good, but
Ya I’ll let you know next ride out, we can all hook up!

PS: The County Mounties? ahhh July Long weekend, Car Show, Drinking, wild bush woman and mistaken Identity for my buddy.... All worked out ok.

Sure have....

I rolled up yesterday, more snow, more snow, more snow. I was the only one there and had a blast. Thought I was losing power on the trail until I looked back and saw a 6" deep track. Sweet. Got stuck tryin' to boondock a new route to the cabin (not the best feeling solo) so I turned around just below and headed down. Headed back up Friday.:)

I took a quick poke just up to the rover cabin yesterday. 4 degrees and sunny at the cabin, most snow all year. Even just in the cabin field there was 8" of fresh....way deeper pockets if you lurk through the trees or head up top, but I was solo as well, so no dice. Still some heavy riding to be had around here....haven't even got to the spring riding yet!!

beautiful day up meteor mine yesterday. the snow is getting soft, but the chute at the mine that has been tried to be climb for years was slayed by shawn hastings. another one bites the dust.

A buddy was up Ladybird 2 weekends ago, right after all that fresh snow. 2' of fresh, almost 13' at the cabin! Of course it hasn't snowed much since, but still, will be riding into June I'm sure. This time of year you'll probably have to drive up somewhere close to Norns ck bridge.
