Burning Alpine Sleds!!!

I'm guessing it weighs around 500lbs. pretty lite, I'll be yours comes in right around there. Nice job on the build... :face-icon-small-hap

Are you going to build an air box for it or a snorkel set up? Those foam filters on the carbs sit so low in the hull if you pick up and water they might suck it in and that would be a disaster. Even 2" in the bottom of the boat will splash up pretty high when you run it over rough water too. Cool project.

Good Idea

I actually have a K&N that goes on the carbs. The idea of an air box was a serious consideration. My bud who owns Formula Sports here in the Mac gave me a couple of ideas. I am going to run the K&N setup. I have done the engine compartment lid. The plan with the mini boat is to keep it floating so I had an engine lid in mind all along. The filter will still be up a good 3 - 4 inches above the bottom of the boat. I have the twin venturi bilge setup and twin bilge pumps. The intake has a gap in the throat so water will pass from side to side. I will vent the engine bay with two intake and one outlet. There is also holes for bilge from bow to stern so air should not be a problem. The key to this rig was to keep water out. The only real opening is the cockpit. I have designed the windshield to deflect water with an upper lip and the back of the cockpit has an edge to keep water from flowing in. These are small lips and are limited to small amounts of water but the engine bay and bow are both covered so I think it would take a quite a bit to flood it. This is a theory and until we test it, is only a theory.

One can only plan so much. Sooner or later we have to test the critter. Looking forward to that day. Engine is at the shop at the present time getting tested and checked out. Once again... actual testing will be the proof.

UHMW is the next step and throttle which I am having a great difficulty making decisions with. Foot throttle/trigger vs standard side mount lever. Cruize vs personal control. Cruize is important on long trips. Both hands on the wheel in tight spots equally important. Trying to figure a dual that works......

Still thinking!!!

Getting there...

This has been tough. The small gizmos and gadgets are the toughest. The wiring and hoses will fall into place once everything else fits. Weight is a critical factor. I don't want a heavy boat. Each and everything adds. I need stuff... but how much???

Up to Date

So, I finally got a steering wheel figured out. Like the throttle it has been a concern for weeks. I will come up with a solution for the throttle, I just need to do some other stuff. It always comes together. I will do the UHMW and hopefully the throttle will evolve. If not, I will make it happen and if req'd change it later. I have an idea, I just don't know yet how to make it work.

I am very happy with the steering wheel. It is simple but looks cool and feels great. It also is short enough so it is not a knee banger. Gotta remember 60 degrees is the seadoo steering. Not much on a 10 inch dia steering wheel. I have a feeling this little rig will be a bit twitchy.

I don't have a lot left. The engine is the big deal. I am hoping to have it back soon and I can finish the alignment. Once it is in, the rest will be done. Wiring and hoses are nothing... add some length to some and buy a couple cables to make twin batteries work.... a couple water tight toggles and away we go!!! Basically everything is ready to be glued in place and bolted up.

Hopefully this is the week.... guessing realistically the following week will be the actually one. If all goes well this will be the one. Murphy's law says it is the following....

Once again... Time will tell!!!

Until the next time!!! Keep smiling and hope ya all haven as much fun as me!!!

Not far off

So this is getting really close. i put the UHMW on the bottom tonight. I have an intake grate and throttle left. Then I can align the motor and pump, weld in the collar and put everything together.

Close....

Well, I got the UHMW fit removed and the Grates fabbed. Not sure which none will work the best. Obviously I would like to use the one with 11 bars VS the 8 bar grill for small debris. I just don't know if it will supply enough water. We will see. I have no pics of last nights progress. I got the motor close to aligned and the mount shims welded in place and the mount holes drilled and tapped. For some reason I ran out of bolts so I stopped. Probably for the best. I fell asleep at about 10:00 and woke up this morning in my chair with the tv on around 10:00. Must have been tired lol.

I have some running around to do today and pick up some bolts and a fathers day card so hopefully I will get something accomplished this afternoon.

I'll post the pics when I am done. Should be this weekend!!!

Nice little boat. One question though on what centers did you use to bolt your UHMW on? I have a weldcraft mini like the one that modedmach1 built and want to use UHMW on mine.

Thanks.

The UHMW is bolted approximately 8" centres. This changes slightly due to brackets etc in the way. I tried to keep it at a maximum of 8". Drill and tap the hull, use countersunk head allen bolts 1/4"dia. Once installed use a rubber seal washer on the inside c/w nylock nut. Once all is done coat all with marine grade sika flex. Hopefully nothing leaks!!!

This weekends progress

I have more pics to post but it is late and My CPU is doing updates etc.... I will post some pics in the next few days. Got some real upholstery and the only real hold up is the oil injection lines... tomorrow is another day!!!

Played hooky tonight and took out my big boat. I'll post some of those pics and a link to my u-tube vid.

Its's done!!!

Who ahhhh....!!!! Finally done!!! I'm a happy guy. It has been a month and a half of too much. Test day was today. A couple tweaks and we will be smoking!!!

The rest

So, I will have vids to post from now on. Tonight is a slow internet night so my vids are not going to be posted. We had a blast. We got soaked to the brim and got stuck. I have a good idea how much water to stay in. The little beast is pushing the 50 MPH limits. Too fast really but oh well. The nice thing is it cruises at 30 - 35 MPH at very little throttle. Almost everything we did was 1/4 throttle.

It spins on a dime!!! It gets on step fast and planes very slow. We have one issue to deal with and it throws water in your face badly at certain speeds and trim. We have a couple ideas to pursue and hopefully can rectify the problem in this hull so the next one will work better.

Just so you know you have started a new business. People are going to buy the sheet out of those little boats. Very cool. What is the price going to be on your new line of boats? If you made them 5 at a time would they get much cheaper? If you stand on the rear deck and used the roll bar for a seat would the boat be very tippy? Just thinking it would make a great little fishing boat too.

Yep....

We have a couple very small tweaks we are making... I have a line up of peeps already wanting them. At this point myself, my bro and a couple close buds are going to get them tuned. Once we build a couple more... after we perfect this hull, then I will make a move into the real world. At this point we are doing home builds. Once they work the way I want, then we will move forward with certification and pricing.

This little rig is running well over 40 MPH with a 650cc. I don't know exactly how fast until I take a GPS but I have a good idea by the feel and a couple other boats to compare to. It is awesome!!! I am slowly posting a few vids on u-tube. I'll keep posting the links here as they are uploaded.

Cruize speed is around 30 mph I think.

Lake....

you have to go to a lake to test it..???...its small enough to test in your bathtub..

Lol, ya just about! Still no lakes are in the testing process.... rivers are the way. We tested in the Snye in Ft McMurray. Once we ran for awhile we ventured off onto the Clearwater and then the Athabasca... and then the Horse which is way to low for anything but a quad or 4 x 4. We actually got it stuck in a stupid boulder pile.... stupid because I was stupid enough to go there lol.

So far aside from water spray, it has exceeded my expectations. We did some trimming and re-welding and tuned 90% of the spray out of the equation. I am not 100% satisfied with it yet so we will keep looking at a few items to tweak until it is right.
