Sure, I'll make part of your payment on the sled, split gas and oil for throwing a leg over a sled. :boink:

Haha kind of a different situation there with a one time occurrence, if you borrowed a sled all the time for full day rides yes I would probably rent it to a friend and you would fill it up, both oil and gas. You wouldn't have a spare car around for a buddy to use for free would ya, and then insure them to boot? If you make the choice to have spares for friends that is a completely different scenario. At that point you are taking that into your own hands owning something for friends to ride, and hopefully if you are that into having friends ride you wouldn't be asking these questions if there was an accident. With that said, if I did own a sled for a friend to ride, why would I pay insurance to have them protected, make them get their own or understand that if they break it they buy it. A wreck potentially has a lifetime of consequences with insurance claims which is why I say I dont insure it for you, I insure it for "Me". If "I" have an accident or something go wrong out of my hands "I" am protected. The moment you want to ride or borrow or use something of mine, it's its your responsibility to fix it just as if it was your own.

What about trailering? Does the person driving assume 100% of the tab if he's towing a buddies sled that's not insured?

Thats easy, heck ya you are responsible. Unless the passenger jumped across the console and grabbed the wheel to rip it into the ditch it was either you, the drivers fault, or somebody elses fault hitting you, in which their insurance would cover costs........Assuming they were insured yada yada yada yada. There are ifs and buts to all of these scenarios haha.

In the interest of being a smart butt. If the "wreckee" says :wave:to you after smashing up your shiny :flypig: you have permission to beat the living :censored: out of him. Treat him to a little chin music :boxing: Turn him into your :whip: boy or :phone: me and I'll do it for you:heh:. If he doesnt :bolt: on you, make him wish he did by using the above rules anyway. Im :director: from experience here. I watched my uncle crater:scared: my new XP like that back in '08 and it :hurt: sumthing fierce. Kinda like taking a :flame: ember in the eye. No :nono: I didnt beat him like a :deadhorse: (come on man, he's my uncle!) and yes we shared a Hallmark moment:heart: on the mountain (no not this kind  but rather a moment more like this :tea:) because that's what friends and family do. And yes..................he did pay to fix my sled. Make sense:face-icon-small-con

i don't think they will raise rates on sled insurance due to a claim it's not like car insurance.pay deductable and claim it stuff happens.
p/s best use o emoticans in a post this year

Big difference between barrowing a sled.... and taking it for a lap in the meadow. If you take my sled for a days ride then you have some liability- if we're in a meadow and i let you take it then that's on me.

I've been in the meadow with guys on older sleds and said "try mine and see how you like it." If the rider doesn't do any "rider error" then i wouldn't even consider asking him to pay.... and i'm sure my friends would insist on paying. And if you are that woried about turning it into the insurance company-- you either need better insurance- or you wreak WAY to much sh##.

If you want to remain buddies, use your insurance, that's what it is for.

If you want an ex-buddy make him pay in full, even though you have insurance to cover this situation.

If you were worried about damage and who would pay, why did you loan it out without a written rental agreement? Because he is a buddy!

Ditto 2 what he said!!!

i have state farm insurance and i asked them if i have a claim does it go against my driving/insurance record. thier answer was yes, any damage claim would be considered an "at fault" accident.

I have a 2013 Pro. No one else in my riding group has one. They have all rode it now, but no one rode it early in the year. Not worth the risk of damaging a friendship.

If someone hit a tree, or did something stupid, I'd make them pay for it. If someone hit a rock or log that was buried, that I would have hit if I was on it, I'd go thru insurance and deal with the consequences.

I also have State Farm on both sled and trailer but have Farmer's on my cars--that way my auto insurance should not be affected by a snowmobile wreck

I loaned out one of my sleds to a "friend" for a 3 day overnighter ($750 rental value). He ran into my new sled and tore up my seat--refused to replace the seat--no one will lend him anything anymore--he's done:face-icon-small-fro.

Don't lend out you sled if its not insured--$248.00, $250 deduct, State Farm, borrower pays deduct.

BCB

Thanks to this thread I will not put an uninsured sled on my trailer. Trailer/sleds have been known to get stolen/wrecked.

I'd say the buddy can either pay the deductible and have insurance fix it, or buy the parts, the owner buys the beer and the guys fix it themselves.

I totalled a 2009 RMK in '10 and caused $4500 in damage to a SBA in '11 and claimed it both times. My premium hasn't gone up at all. I asked and they said the Sled is covered under the umbrella policy (I think), so the claims don't count against you to increase your premium... So that was good to know, I have American Family Insurance and my 2012 Assault RMK costs me about $23/month to fully insure.

Split the deductible with the guy that crashed it and the owner use the owners insurance. For buddy to claim on homeowners insurance you would both have to lie and basically commit insurance fraud.

Took my 13 year old son out on a 2001 MXZ500 two years ago. Caught on fire & we couldn't get it put out. I wouldn't had even had full coverage on a 2k sled but it was dirt cheap as a second sled on my policy. Glad I did looking back. Regardless, fully expected my premium to go up but it didn't. However, rider in this scenario needs to step up somehow, even though no one was "at fault".

So, if you totalled a new sled, you'd pay 12k when it's insured? I don't believe that for a minute.

If I wrecked someones sled I would. on a positive note, that's why no one ever wants to borrow my stuff :face-icon-small-hap. Reality is that if it's a true buddy I wouldn't let a couple $$'s ruin the relationship. We'd work something out.

Buddy pays all of it, why should your insurance rates rise because of someone else's crash? Every sled Ive ever loaned out..... you break it you buy it, no exceptions.
