Best M series Aftermarket Bumper Mod?

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
Had to get the last couple pics in there for the guys who are doing t his at home.

When buying the flap & LED, don't forget to get the 2 screws that mount the LED to the flap. They are only .22 each but alot more in gas to make another trip to the cat dealer if you forget them. Also, the black rivets that mount the flap to the end cap are quite handy. Good Luck

ToodeepTodd- looks good.
Installing a 09 rear tunnel extension makes it so much easier-and to to the BDX conversion.. the tunnel is already pre cut and drilled for the cross brace in the end cap that is mucho- required to have this hold up..

Just my 02

wow why are you guys with 07-08's changeing coolers???? i guess you cut the back of the tunnel? if you leave the rear of the tunnel alone and mod the stock bumper you'll have full protection and support for your cooler. no need to cause yourselves all the extra work... oh yea, i'd loose the full flap and just run the mini flap. ever notice when your digging out the flap is always pressing down on the snow, sometimes so hard you have to dig under it to get the snow out. with the mini flap it eliminates this problem. and no it does not throw anymore snow out the back going down the trail... but you probably shouldn't park behind one in the deep:) all i did to the stock bumper was to cut the handle off and notch the sides so it fits around the new bumper. my buddie just bought the bdx kit, he paid $230, add $30 for a taillight and your done!!!

am going down to the shop today so will get some better pics. actually used part of the rails you cut off, massaged it to fit the curve where the original taillight used to sit then riveted in place. used the mounting bracket the 4 barr l.e.d. came with for a template, drilled out the holes for the l.e.d. bulbs to go through and you've got yourself a taillight that is at least a couple if not a few pounds lighter.

just to point out

Very true-^^^ run you old coolers
Another Issue I ran into last year
with my 1st BDX conversion-
I went with the 4-barr LED tail light..
It get's covered up quickly with snow dust
and is usless, might as well not have one
Mine was mounted up higher
But if it doesn't bother you go with it
is a good cosmetic addition.,..
This is why I went with
the 09 rear light this time around.

Looks good! And a new powder claw to boot!

I don't think the 09 conversion sno flap and taillight assy will work on a 06 crossfire if you want to keep the rack. I want to do the conv. but want the rack. Not sure what to do now. Has anyone got a crossfire done yet? Pic?

Three reasons I did the 09 cooler.

1. The huge amount of snow/ice that builds up in the stock bumper/cooler.
Large pocket back there!

2. Ounce the 09/BDX kit is installed the old cooler is hang from a couple less bolts and is likely to get bumped or munched. Especially if you don't cut and use the 07-08 tail light/cap.

3. The 09 tunnel end cap is a must in my mind. That is where the rear of the tunnel gets its strength! I see that BDX tunnel folding SUPER EASY with out the "boxed" rear end. The 09 cooler fits sweet and completes the 09 conversion, not a garage style rear end look.

Bumper board mod

Went the cheap route when converting to the 09 bumper, $29 Orange bumper 09 snoflap and light.

To do the running boards I cut boards at rear suspenion mount, cut ground and angled the edge strip, aircraft rivets and or pop rivets, picture here I promised to post of the angled up stock boards stock board trim, just some shop time.

runboard left finished kicked up m8 11 08.JPG

i guess maybe the 09 kit is different than the kit i bought for my M8 last year? if you have the same kit as i do from bdx i don't see any reason for cutting the top rear of the tunnel. all i cut on mine when i installed it was the sides of the tunnel. if you leave the top rear alone you have exactly the same amount of support and protection for the cooler as it had stock. everything is the same as it was stock except the rear of the rails are gone and the plastic bumper is no longer bolted to the sides of the tunnel. with the new bumper being riveted from the kickups back don't see the tunnel being one bit weaker than it was stock. that pocket of ice and snow build up is nice to have when the snow gets a little thin, the flat cooler sure doesn't look like its in the best spot for catching spray from the track for cooling. without the long snowflap scrubbing your speed when you start to trench down, the garage style rear end seems a little more functional and is AWESOME in the deep pow;)

Rear Remodel

The M series sleds have always been snow flap deficient. The 09 snowflap length is the best addition to the 09 M's. If you have the luxury or always riding in 6" or more of dense fluff then no sno flap may be necessary, acutally you can can the rear heat exchanger all together.

where I ride here in West Mt a typical outing it to take off at the truck at 3500' on old icy packed trail or road and you need long snow flap and ice scrather to live healthy, by 5000 ft elevation you are in 18" of heavy new powder and you can pull up the scrathers, at 7500 ft elevation you are riding a windswept ridge of snow ghosts, broken shale rock and patches of ice before you drop in a bowl. And a lot of confused riders with steam boiling or shut down sleds riding this high country struggle with the concept. Problem is most new sleds just drop back to about 80hp and limp along.

Using 07 heat exchanger

You don't have to use the 09 exchanger or cut the opening in the tunnel either.
My tunnel was cracking with the conversion. With no rear rupport
( Sandman found a solution using his stock rear support modded bumper)
I was having Issues.( read the 1st few pages in this post)

I went to the 09 tunnel to replace my cracked 07 and cut the rear 09 flap as I didn't like the diaper look of the loooooong flap.
You have heat exchangers running down the inside of your tunnel on both sides-and running with scratchers provide more than enough cooling and lube.
My water temps get to the point that I have to only use one (1) scratcher to keep temps around the 140*.

Anyhoo- here is a pic of a 09 tunnel on a 07 M1000 with the 07 cooler..fit's just fine!!

Great Post!

No issues with using the 09 taillight with the 07 sled? Going from a bulb to a LCD?

Just ordered mine today ... BDX bumper, 09 cap/flap/taillight, going to try and straighten my 07 intercooler :face-icon-small-sho

It will Work

No issues with using the 09 taillight with the 07 sled? Going from a bulb to a LCD?

Nope-but you have to splice the wires as the 09 tail light will not interchange with the connection on the harness of the 07 or the 08 sleds.

Wonder what the lead time is now on the 09 parts- I know it has been backorder for a long time

My dealer says 1st or second week of Dec for the taillight .. rest is available.

I'm really excited about this mod... not only looks bad-azz, but I was reviewing some of last years riding pics and there must to be 20 lbs of ice in the back of the footwells and intercooler/flap area.
