Snowpack Analysis

A strong series of fronts began to move across the Northwest starting at the end of March. Total snowfall for the past week ranges from 4-8 feet near and west of the crest with probably about half as much east of the crest.

The fronts have been accompanied by strong winds and storm wind and soft slab instability. There have also been periods of sun induced slab and loose snow avalanches between the storms. There are reports of cracking and natural or triggered slab avalanches on the FOAC Exchange and Turns All Year for the Mt Baker area and near Crystal for last weekend. A close call for last weekend is described at Mission Ridge in a Recent Accident Summary on the NWAC web page.

There have also been reports of deep more stable powder on more sheltered slopes, slopes at lower elevations, and slopes with more trees.
Detailed Forecasts
Wednesday

A warm front should begin to spread southwest ridge top winds and precipitation to the Northwest on Wednesday. The gradually increasing winds and rain or snow should spread from the Olympics and north Cascades Wednesday morning to the central and south Cascades by Wednesday afternoon with warmer temperatures.

This weather should begin to build new small initially shallow wind or soft slab layers on lee slopes. This should be mainly north to east slopes at higher elevations. A slight warming trend Wednesday should favor this development. Use more cautious route finding and more conservative decision making if you decide to travel in the back country later Wednesday.

The next strengthening front should cross the Northwest on Wednesday night. This should be accompanied by strong southwest winds and increasing moderate to heavy snowfall. This should build new areas of deeper potential slab layers on lee slopes. This should continue mainly on north to east slopes at higher elevations.
Thursday

Strong west ridge top winds and moderate to heavy snow showers should be seen most of Thursday. The snowfall should generally be heaviest near and west of the crest and in the north to central Cascades. Convergence effects should also favor that area. Rapidly increasing snow depths should favor instability and deeper slab development on lee slopes. This should slightly change to northeast to southeast slopes at higher elevations. Back country travel in avalanche terrain not recommended on Thursday.

West ridge top winds and snow showers may slightly decrease Thursday night. The avalanche danger may slightly decrease Thursday night. But storm slab layers are likely to linger on lee slopes into Friday. It should be safer to go for the late season powder in the ski areas on Thursday and Friday.

I am with what you are saying--but saying that this club(NWGC) are inexperianced--WOW--Alot of these people were riding sleds up here before you were born. I think that they all go way out of their way to put this on for us--you should see all the work that goes into this--ALOT.

As far as Avy Danger signs-Rated at 4 for thursday already--I think it is a great idea--but why should the club supply them?-They have plenty on their plate-depending on where the camp is--I will try and put up a sign for information.
This is a Barbeque put on by them to help raise funds for the NWGC and SAWS. There is no scheduled racing--it is no different than any other saturday on the hill as far as riding goes--except Randy is going to have it groomed and try to build a sled run on the side of the road to as low as possible on the road to help so u do not have to ride gravel--as long as people do not drive in to it or turn around and drive through it.
I will have a trailer at base camp to haul sleds up to the snow/turnaround and back at the end of the day to help out on saturday--4 place open for quick load and unloads--will pick you up at your rig and drop you off at your rig--come find me at base camp to set it up. From the looks of it--I may not have to do this with the 1000' snow level friday with snow starting tonight and not stopping till friday night.

The big thing here---Everyone needs to be patient and be curtious!!! This is for fun one and all.

Nope..I have to agree with Brandy on this one. It isnt about what is or what isnt their responsibility. It is more about what is the most responsible thing to do. What is the right thing to do. What is something that can benifit others and can be used as an educational tool as well. It doesnt take squat to have a cheap *** vinyl banner made with what Brandy stated. Call it a BBQ if you want but that is the "draw" for a lot of the other activity wether you want to say it was part of their event or not. It really doesnt matter..it isnt about the nit picky legal details..its about the right thing to do. Snowmobile clubs very often have some very inexperianced people in them. You cant expect everybody to know every thing about mountain survival and safety. I agree they should but that isnt a real world senerio..so with that in mind put up a sign. Crapola...a bomb can on some plywood would even suffice..it isnt that tough.

Sort of like how a snowmobile club has their function and wants to tell people how to park or where to park or dont track up thier snow or whatever...so they can have more people utilizing their event. Different but the same.

As far as demolitions goes..thats not realistic on public land. Just the enviromental impact ramifications from the Greenies would be horific.
It takes way more than a permit to use demolitions(Ruffy)

That may have been Brandy's longest post this year also!

Just stay home. You should run for an elected position in the club. They always need someone smarter than them to run things.

I am with what you are saying--but saying that this club(NWGC) are inexperianced--WOW--

Again, this is NOT what he said. Part of the club's functions are to bring new people into the sport, is it not? DD was only making the comment, that SOME members of the club MIGHT not be very experienced, and that having it be a CLUB event / function, that it might give a false sense of security to THOSE INEXPERIENCED sledders. You know, club function = family friendly event = safe event. Even though that is not always the case. DD and Brandy seemed to be interested in the POSSIBILITY and making sure that the word is out there about this issue.

Who knew a bunch of men were so sensitive?

If it was called off there are still ALOT of people going. I was at cook road shell fueling up my semi this morning and in the 25 min I was there prob 10 trucks with sleds came in and then headed out..

Everybody have a great time and be safe!!!!:face-icon-small-hap

Exactly..thanks RR... Was more family club in general statement, definitly more concerned about the families and young children than anything else.. Had nothing to do with NWGC at all. If it did I would have clearly said it. We as snowmobilers just need to keep it safe and dont need another Revy incident.

Ruffrider...slap Rob upside his head next time you see him for me, just for good measure as there must be some reason he deserves it!:>) Whenever you want to come over this way give me a shout. I promise I wont ask you to explain the difference between incident and reflected waves along with tropospheric scatter after you have been handicapped with hops and water flavored beverages! :>)

Now Brandy F. be nice with the men jokes. :>)))))

9:00AM in marysville and it's a sunny beautiful day looking towards Baker... Looks like the shootout will have great weather for once! Have a great time,be safe and then post lots of pics.....:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-win

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the club members and volunteers that are helping to make this event what it is. I rode on Friday (4-9) and there were many members and volunteers already there assisting and directing parking. The groomer had also done a great job in preparing the road for all types of riders. I have to work the weekend and will not get the chance to stay for the shootout, but from what I saw, it looked like the event was well thought out and should be a lot of fun. Thanks again to everyone involved.
