ayone else ride with ear plugs?

As a sawer and wildland firefighter we use EAR brand plugs, They start out yellow and after a week to a month turn near black. Wash them till they get a little "soft" and toss em out or loose them by then. If you think thats bad you should see what comes out our noses at the end of a shift !. "One day use"..... I dont think so. "Ear infections"... I did not see one in near 30 years. As for sleding I put a MBRP can on a RMK 700 last year and had to whare plugs but did not like it much, Switched out the can for one not so loud but still had all the power. Just did the same on my TRX1. did a mod to quiet it down. I do beleave we can have power and a reasonable sound level.:beer;:beer;

I run A D8 Cat every day for 10 hours. I use EAR yellow plugs. Tried the MAX orange plugs but after 2 or three insertions they lose their rigidity and start to let the noise back in. The yellows work slightly better, can usually get a day out of them. Our safety supervisor has told us several times that if you aren't inserting them properly u might as well not wear any at all. U I pod guys thought of wearing plugs and hanging your buds near your ear so u can still hear them? I've worn muffs running terex buggy before with Buds inside the muffs and plugs in. It worked good, didn't have to listen to that jimmy all day. Definately throw the plugs after a day though, dirty plugs make your ears sore very quickly.

PLEASE READ THIS (Hearing Loss is PERMANENT)

Cajun, Guys,
During my short life of 34 years, and spending much of my youth in and out of ear and sinus infections, and when I wasnt sick I was either running heavy equipment, chainsaw, or building some sort of off-road rig. (It all started with cutting the baffles out of my 300SS Elan muffler at 10 years old, also when I learned how to weld), I spent MANY hours in a super cub listening to the tin rattle with no muffs, I had a few triple piped race sleds, and raced blown dragsters...... theres nothing like the sound of a blown dragster, short of a tuned triple...:D
Well, a D8 with a blade full of dirt is pretty freakin cool too, thats a feeling of REAL horsepower...
I have a 10db threshold shift on one side and 15 on the other.
Its forever.
Think about this:
For things to sound normal I have to turn up the TV, my phone, and the tunes in my rig to levels that are uncomfortable for my wife, and kids. It makes life very difficult and aggravating to say the least when you are watching a show and cant hear what is being said during the best part....my ears ring all the time.
When I want to sleep, they are ringing.
When I wake up because I think there was a strange noise outside, they ring
When I have a headache they ring.
When I want some quiet time by the firepit, they ring.
When my wife is mumbling about the sled parts bill, they ring.
My ears NAG me more than she ever could. Sounds like a mini turbine running on full tilt in my head....all the time.
On top of all that nowadays I work at a Oil Production facility that contains 12 turbines that total about 30,000 hp. We move about 50,000 bbls of fluid per day. Many rooms are 130+ db. We wear double hearing protection when in the room for more than a minute.
Acute Hearing loss occurs during exposure to loud noise resulting in "tinnitus" or ringing in the ears which goes away and is often put off as no big deal, the "ringing" is telling you something. Those repetitive exposures are slowly KILLING your hair in your inner ear, it will NEVER grow back.
Chronic hearing loss is the accumulation of those exposures and becomes PERMANENT and IT SUCKS!

I can GO ON and ON about the things I miss about my hearing

EAR plugs are all uncomfortable to some degree, you have to try them out and see what you like. It often takes many days for your ear to get used to each kind. For me the EAR Classic is the best. The EAR Lite is the best IMHO. I like the MAX orange OK for a short use, such as my racecar because they are more quiet....otherwise they hurt my canal too much. I can wear the yellows all day, and they are slightly uncomfortable, but NOTHING like the ringing that I hear all the time, even as I write this message....nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

You guys riding with IPODs are just actually making hearing loss WORSE by adding MORE noise to drown out the other "unwanted" noise.....either way its all noise....and I LOVE jammin tunes but you must ask yourself is it worth it? I wish I would have had some guidance as a young guy, maybe I wouldnt have another fourty or fifty years of ringing in my head to listen to.

Hey if you cover up a pile of turds on the floor are they still there? WHAT? I invite ANYONE to argue with me on this one. Id like to see the noise reduction rating on a set of ear buds...LMAO
RE: Ipod guys, not poking at you just spewing the facts in hopes of helping save someone the nightmare that I live every moment of every day....
What I have to look forward to is "total hearing loss", cuz I guess the ringing just gets LOUDER until its gone.:eek::eek::mad:

Don't worry about not hearing things going bad. I know this will sound like I overdosed on Vicodin but you can actually hear the internal noises and misses in your engine better with the earplugs in. One big downside to wearing earplugs is not hearing the avy bearing down on your azz, but if you don't wear earplugs at 45 years old you won't hear the avy coming either, can't win.

I use speedo swimmers silicone ear plugs. You roll them up into a ball and then stick them in your ears. They mold to fit and work great.

I should have worn them long ago. I have tinitus now (constant ringing in both ears). Pretty sure that problem started after running a setup of PSI twins.......never even considered what I was doing to my hearing.

If you think this only has to do with sleds that are too loud, you are wrong. Most sleds will damage your hearing. Just some more than others.

For the guy that mad the modular helmet joke, that is pure ignorance. Protect your hearing folks.

Usually don't wear earplugs... decade of playing drums, add in a few years of working next to (or in) big machinery, MP3 players + headphones.... I can't hear scht anyways.

These are win though:
earplug-4.jpg

These are the same ones I wear they work good. Ya I catch crap from the guys I ride with but at least I'll be able to hear my kids and way later on my grandkids. Plus I don't have to hear ringing every night after a ride. just my .02

Hotboat.. Way to go man thats awesome of you to do that way to be in a position to make a difference in our sport and actually do it.. a few more people like yourself and this might not be such a bad place.
I have a question for you, as far as the ipods go, is there a way to listen to your ipod that helps with noise reduction, or when you listen to them in your helmet, does it just add db's to the noise that your already getting from the engine?? if you know of a good product to accomplish both, i'd like to hear about it as I can also see it happening after years of hunting and sleddin and i think its time to start taking care of the hearing before it gets too bad...
good thread too!!!
As long as you don't crank the volume on the ipod to max you should be OK. The ear bub inserts you use on you ipod do block some incoming sounds. But I think what your asking is if you have a 110 db sound pressure from your sled and 90db sound pressure coming from your ipod will that equal 200db total sound pressure ??? The answer is NO. However the ipod is a poor substitute for ear protection.

well so for the last couple of months i have been using the ear plugs hotboat made for me and there is no more head aches or ringing ears after a day of riding. thanks hotboat for the ear plugs cause they are working great! i dont know why i never wore ear plugs the whole time i have been rinding. if you guys are not wearing some sort of noise reducer...i highly suggest using them. they will save alot of head aches and ringing ears and not to mention...your hearing! thanks again hotboat!

How does one hear the motor, or if something happens! I got an Ipod for xmas and was wondering the same thing. I just wanna make sure that I can still hear if something goes awry and I hear it soon enough I can stop before mor damage occurs

I ride with an ipod but keep the volume down and use only one earbud that way i can still here the motor in case anything happens.

oh i forgot to write this down but ear plugs actually help ALOT with being able to hear your motor run! i can notice sounds that i cant hear with them out...put them in...can hear them clear as day! good little pointer if you want to keep your ear on your engine.

Bringing this one back up to the top.

I have found what, in my opinion, is going to wind up being the best ear plug I've ever used.

http://earinc.com/p1-filtered-afiltered.php

These things were designed for the logging industry where the loggers needed to be able to hear small things (like changes in the way their saws were working) but not have their hearing buggered up because of the two stroke engines screaming away.

They don't affect anything below 80dB, but everything over 80dB is filtered down to where you can hear it like normal.

I didn't believe they would work very well until I was standing on a compressor deck in a refinery carrying on a normal conversation. I thought to myself "These things can't be working this good." So I pulled them out. My god, the difference was night and day. I will gladly pay the expense again and again as the molds get old and don't fit right anymore. My hearing is bad enough as it stands now.

If you do order a set, as I suggest you do, get the Hollow Concha profile. I ordered the grip profile and wish I wouldn't have.

I wear them. Keep em in my riding pants to so I don't have to fiddle around and forget them in my gear bag.

old trick!

wore them when race motocross, wore them when race grandprix (bullet bikes). wore them when race vorra. now on sleds. please don't listen to those who don't. You can't put a price on hearing. (yes, you can still hear your sled). If you want to be treated like professional, act like a professional. And in ten years you don't walk around saying Huh, what? what did you say!!!

Good thread! I thought I was the only nerd that didn't mind wearing ear protection on a stock exhaust sled. Noise is noise and is all damaging, I guess that is why my left ear is at 0 and my right is -4.

It is always nice to come back to the cabin at night and not have your ears ringing.
