ayone else ride with ear plugs?

You don't get ear infections from the outside very often (it is sealed by the tympanic membrane). Think about all of the stuff that ends up in your ear anyway. He may be "cheap" but not "retarded". I have used one headphone from my Ipod so that I can still listen to the engine which is helpful to hear the engine still when shifting (ie:motorcycles) but with snowmobiles it shouldn't matter. I am going to try both ears next time. Also in regards to hearing your engine, when you get used to the plugs you can still pick up differences in your engine, it is just quieter.

We had our hearing tested for work. Told the tester that I carry a set of foam plugs in my pants pocket and run them through the wash when dirty. Thought he was going to have a stroke. He said that they should only be used once. To be sure they should never be used for more than one day. I figure that a set that has been in my pocket with occasional use for a month is a lot better than using nothing. I am provided plugs at work but still seems bad to throw something away that looks perfectly fine.

Back to the point, I put a can on this year and so I am going to start wearing plugs at least when on the trail. Noise isn't too bad once you get in to the powder. They will be the disposable foam plugs. Probably sponsored by my place of employment.

hey guys i was wondering how many other people ride with ear plugs and what are the best ones? i am only 18 and i can already notice i don't hear wortha crap anymore thanks to sleds, tractors, guns and such so i wanted to get into the habit of wearing ear plugs to save what hearing i have left. i have worn them a couple of times sledin but after a while it feels like my head is swelling up...im guessing they are expanding to much and they are just a pain when you stop to talk to someone real quick and cant hear crap so you have to take off your helmet and pull one out every time, it just pisses me off aftera while. we tryed some custon mix and stick in your ear and let them set type but they cured before we could get them in so that was a waste of $15. i like the sound of my sled but it gives me a head ache after listening to it all day. anyone got any ideas or suggestions? thanks in advance!
cheers!:beer;:D

Hey ragincajun,
Today's your lucky day, I'm a hearing specialist and also a snowmobile enthusiast. It just so happens as part of my practice, I fit hearing protection. It sounds like you've been exposed to enough loud noises already. If you can tell at the young age of 18, as you said "don't hear wortha crap anymore" are noticing that much loss, you MUST PROTECT the hearing you have left!!!! Imagine how hard it would be to communicate with your friends at school or with family members at home with ear plugs in. That is what people who suffer from noise induced hearing loss experience every day. I'm pleased to see you are concerned about your hearing. And because of your age and because your a student and probably not employed, I will make you a set of custom sound suppressors pro bono (free). I see you live very close to Great Falls PM me and I will get you the info you need for an appointment.

A few years ago, I contracted Minere's deasise. I've lost 80% of my hearing in my left ear and about 45% in my right. I ALWAYS wear ear protection, mowing the lawn, shooting trap/skeet and riding my sled!
Once it's gone, you'll never get it back - hearing aids are a poor second place to your real ears......
Not to mention expensive!!!!!!!!!

holy SH%$$ hotboat! u serious!? that would be awsome! i would really aprecieate it! ill pm you! cheers to you! lol thanks alot!

Hearing

dont listen to the guys that say ,i cant hear the motor. the earplugs just block out the sounds that hurt your hearing. we could carry on a normal conversation with the plugs in, but they block out the bad.i wear them all day everyday and they are comfortable once you are used to them

I used to wear the foam plugs when I rode my crotch rocket. I loved them. They blocked the pipe noise and wind and I could hear the low tones of the motor better. I don't know why I never thought to wear them on the sled. I will be from now on though. I don't care who you are -- deaf due to ignorance is not cool.
P.s. I tried the ipod thing and hated it. We talk to each other way too much to be trying to listen to music.

Great post. I have a friend that I used to ride with all the time who has a mod sled that was so loud it hurt your ears to be anywhere near it. I hated it. My buddy had to wear ear-plugs because of this sled and every time we would stop and try to talk, he could never hear without taking the plugs out. It was really annoying. However, after reading all of this, I'm thinking about trying them on my next ride.

Oh and by the way, I re-use my ear plugs too. I'm on the road alot and I hate staying in Hotels when there is a party going on next door and I have to get up early in the morning. I have a few sets that just stay in my bag.

Ipod in helmet

Hotboat.. Way to go man thats awesome of you to do that way to be in a position to make a difference in our sport and actually do it.. a few more people like yourself and this might not be such a bad place.
I have a question for you, as far as the ipods go, is there a way to listen to your ipod that helps with noise reduction, or when you listen to them in your helmet, does it just add db's to the noise that your already getting from the engine?? if you know of a good product to accomplish both, i'd like to hear about it as I can also see it happening after years of hunting and sleddin and i think its time to start taking care of the hearing before it gets too bad...
good thread too!!!

Great post Cajun! I wish I'd thought more about my hearing when I was your age. I'm afraid the damage is done but they're standard equipment when I ride now. It might just be my opinion but I think that the ear plugs clean up a lot of the junk noise and lets my hear the engine better. I always carry a few extra pair if someone asks about mine.

thanks for all the good feed back! i figured i would get a little on bashed for bein a puss or sumthin but it nice to see good feed back! i figured i should do something about my hearing since im always saying what and am tired of my gf getting mad at me cause im always saying what? lol maby i need to get some just for her 2 lol.

Go Custom

I tried alot of different ear phones for my ipod and everything hurt my ear in some way that is why I got the custom ones from big ear. I can ride motorcyle all day without any discomfort. Best thing ever!:)

How does one hear the motor, or if something happens! I got an Ipod for xmas and was wondering the same thing. I just wanna make sure that I can still hear if something goes awry and I hear it soon enough I can stop before mor damage occurs

You don't crank it and try too drown out your sled. It may seem hard to hear the tunes at first but after a while you can hear it better.:beer;:beer;

i made my own can for my old sled i thought it was sweet... i lost 40% in my right ear now my open mod 800 is way to loud to run without ear plugs. so they go in, i have small molded flesh tone plugs comfy and concerts sound way better :D
