hey guys i was wondering how many other people ride with ear plugs and what are the best ones? i am only 18 and i can already notice i dont hear wortha crap anymore thanks to sleds, tractors, guns and such so i wanted to get into the habit of wearing ear plugs to save what hearing i have left. i have worn them a couple of times sledin but after a while it feels like my head is swelling up...im guessing they are expanding to much and they are just a pain when you stop to talk to someone real quick and cant hear crap so you have to take off your helmet and pull one out every time, it just pisses me off aftera while. we tryed some custon mix and stick in your ear and let them set type but they cured before we could get them in so that was a waste of $15. i like the sound of my sled but it gives me a head ache after listening to it all day. anyone got any ideas or suggestions? thanks in advance!
cheers!:beer;:D

Before repacking the silencers on my XLT (with SLP triple pipes) I wore ear plugs. Didn't wear them last time out and the sound level was fine. Definitely protect your hearing though if you're worried. There's nothing "cool" about being a tough guy and going without hearing protection when it's necessary.

I bought a bulk pack of "Laser Lite" soft foam ear plugs from Lab Safety Supply. Think they were $25 for 50 pairs, iirc. Very comfortable and give 29dB sound reduction.

earplugs

i wear them everytime i ride, everyone has their own opinions on comfort because everyones ear canal is different. i personally like the moldex sparkplugs, and they have one of the highest nrr rating of 33.

Sounds like your on the right track in thinking of your hearing...however, if it is so loud that ear plugs are necessary, try to keep in mind your fellow riders that DO have to listen to your sled wide open. I've heard a few that were so loud from 300+ feet away that it made my head hurt instantly:mad: Good luck with whatever solution you do find, but keep in mind that there are other people that will be riding around you.

Happy Sledding :beer;

Maybe just maybe....the sled doesn't need to be *quite* that loud?? I've got a couple friends with sleds so bloody loud I damn near need earplugs to ride WITH them, let alone on them. Guess I don't see the appeal.....

after farming and ranching and all the shooting i do, i wore ear plugs on and off, but when i started operating more open cabbed equipment i am a firm believer in ear plugs. It's amazing how much you turn up your radio after a day of work or riding. I like the 30 db reduction that are preformed. But i used to have the same problem as you with my head hurting, and i actually had the plug too far in. i pulled it out slightly and then i ears could adjust pressure again without noises being louder. Plus my buddies have some crazy loud sleds that you need ear plugs to ride with them.

Usually don't wear earplugs... decade of playing drums, add in a few years of working next to (or in) big machinery, MP3 players + headphones.... I can't hear scht anyways.

These are win though:

Ever thought about getting the kind that let you hear but if it gets to a certain decibel it works like an earplug?

ya, i have thought about it but i have the high school kid budget so i dont think ill be able to spend a ton of money even thought i enjoy my being able to hear. i think ill stick to some less expensive ear plugs. but thanks for the suggestion!:beer;

How does one hear the motor, or if something happens! I got an Ipod for xmas and was wondering the same thing. I just wanna make sure that I can still hear if something goes awry and I hear it soon enough I can stop before mor damage occurs

Good for you ragin....I'm 40 and wished I'd thought about ear plugs at your age. I were'em now tho, with a moto x helmet (hate to have anyone think I wear a mod helmet, that would crush my manhood). Got tired of hearing the drone and having my ears ringing after riding...

I wear them:
1.) riding snowmobiles
2.) traveling on airplanes
3.) going to the movies
4.) going to concerts
5.) shooting sports
6.) mowing the lawn

I prefer the little blue soft plastic ones. They fit better and stay in place better. They are tiny and easy to carry with me where ever I go. They fit under my helmet perfectly and are totally comfortable. They dont get real hard in the cold weather. I have not liked the foam ones.

After 10 years as a ranger, getting blownup, riding a UBR 944 with racing stingers, and a wife that just saw the credit card bill I wear the basic orange MAX's they work great. its actually amazing what ambient nioses you hear on the sled. WITH motocross helmet. Hearing last time I checked cannot be replaced! great post Cajun:beer;:beer;:beer;
