anyone use the Formula X-1 secondary clutch kit?

The pictures on the website for Diamond Drive sleds, it sure look like it's a compression type setup. All it shows is a helix, a very stout looking spring and a spring cover with 6 bolts.

77.5 grams, I ran from heel to tip 3,2,1,2. Sled is a 2011 crossfire 8 sp with 2.25 track and 57/63 gearing. Also I run the 046 belt. Mels kit tears up the 060's and the 046's are cheaper.[/QUOTE]

:high5:Okay I have a opportunity to head West for my first time. Steamboat Colorado. With my clutching stated above for flat land what would I need to do for the mountains? Thanks.

Thunder101, how did the clutch work for you?

Was it noticeably better than previous setups you have tried?

How was the backshift?

Back shift is what this secondary set up does ! Very chrisp off and on the gas. It takes a lot of weight to mph, in the mountains the back shift would slow you down desending . I found it hard to work the throttle at low speeds as it makes track speed quickly. Mel has sent me out the lighter spring which I have not yet tried but will this weekend I'm hoping.

I have the x1 upgrade in my 09 m8 its works amazing well. Stop looking for more reasons to not to get it. I sent my whole secondary clutch to him and it returned to my belief way better then factory. I highly suggest this upgrade to anyone with a snowmobile that wants to get the most out your sled.

I have no personal experience of this kit but two pals (M8 -09 and M8 -10) just installed them and they said it flat out works. The power is always there even how much you pump the throttle and reverse works 100%. Also no more CLUNCK noise when going to reverse/forward.

Two other pals ordered these kits also, can't wait to see how they work on M8 -10 and M1000 -09. Sounds this is THE KIT to start your drive line mods.

Mel's Formula x-1 Clutch Kit

Installed the clutch kit a couple days ago on my 08 M8 162 and tried it out today for the first time. HUGE difference between stock secondary with 36* helix and orange spring and mels kit. His kit always keeps your sled in the powerband. The backshift is amazing. Very responsive. One of the best mods ive done to my sled. I wasnt sure at first comparing his kit to the stock helix and spring. After I tried it today I can't believe I waited so long to buy it! My belts are much much cooler now. Before they would get hot after just 5-10 minutes of riding. Now I can keep them pinned climbing and boondocking and they stay cool the whole time. Only bad thing about his kit is I can't recommend it to my local riding buddies or they know my secret! You wont be disappointed if you purchase his kit. You'll just wish you hadnt waited so long. Thanks again Mel.

Did you get the thinner/lighter spring with your secondary?

How is this secondary working with MDS clutch weights?

Mels Formula X-1 Clutch Kit Update

I've been riding with mels kit for a couple months now in both soft deep powder and setup firm snow. His kit flat works. Reverse works fine and no clunking going between forward and reverse on my 08M8. Clutch temps dropped considerable and belt life is great. Works great with mds weights and 911 cover on my primary. Didnt get the thinner spring since i ride from sea level to 3000'. Looking forward to trying this setup again next year with a RKT 925 kit and 3" camo extreme. I would highly recommend this kit and mds weights to anyone looking for better performance. You wont be disappointed except that you waited so long to buy to the kit.

I sold my kit. I found the spring to big in wire diameter,I tried to test out the lighter spring Mel sent out to me but it did not fit in the spring cup so I just sold it. It worked great for the first half of the shift then it would slip and over rev so I kept adding weight, it took a lot more cam weight to get it to mph.Once I increased my cam weight up (6gr on a HO) it would MPH but the low end response was not as good as with stock cam weight so I sold it.
I will say that I think Mel is onto a good thing it's just not perfect , not yet or for me anyways.
It also did make the reverse better as it never clunked. Back shift down hill was great and back shift in general was very good.
I am a believer in not over squeezing the belt! It eats HP as the belt also has to come out of the squeeze the sheaves have on it

My 06 700 was also over-revving and seemed to stop pulling. I went to a hardware store and got dry graphite in aerosol and gave a little spray to the secondary hub. Rpm dropped from 8050-8100 to 7800-7850 and pulled like crazy. Most of these secondaries have very little ware on the bushing and hub but it doesn't take much. I'm sending my clutch to MEL for a rebuild and will continue to lubricate the hub.

what's the difference between the x1, and Bdx torsional cam

they look like they do about the same thing, similar in design, I had the bdx in my last turbo, it was ok but hard on rollers, went thru 2 sets in 700 miles, were also rock rollers. How about application on a 240HP turbo sled with a 3"x 162 track. any benefit for turbo application, currently have Twisted Turbo clutching with big dog weights??????
