anyone use the Formula X-1 secondary clutch kit?

Is there much history out there on using this setup on a M1000?

i have only found one person on online forums that has this setup on an M series.....and he has been commenting in this thread (troy). there are a handful of people on hardcoresledder.com and arcticchat.com that have the setup on their firecats and crossfires. i havent heard of anyone NOT liking the setup. in fact, i have talked to two of them that swapped out the RKTEK kit for the X-1 kit and love it. the flat-landers vote seems to be going with the x-1 kit hands down.

i am a semi-flatlander myself. i ride here in the hills of north dakota just as much as i ride out west in the mountains. however, i would rather set my clutch up to work as well is it can in the mountains and "ok" here on ND.

the x-1 has been proven out in MI and MN by many people....i just wish i could find more info from the mountain riders. i cant find any pro's or con's other than what troy has to say about it. and im not saying troy is lying, i just like a few opinions, ya know

haha i love it.

i ride up to a max of 2671' here in Nl canada. we have steep hill's and load's and load's of snow.

i have been in contact with a guy from the same province as me who had tried the BMP torsional, ODS clutch kit and the X-1 kit back to back to back in the same day and he said hands down the best money he has ever spent on clutching was with the X-1 kit. he's running a 2010 crossfire with the 2 1/4 power claw. he has a lot of time spent into tuning and racing machine's and boondocking also. he said this clutch kit work so very well for boondocking. so after talking with him i bought the kit.

no matter where your throttle is you are in the power there is zero lag. throttle response was unreal.

i really like the kit. and i have nothing bad to say about it. very easy to install too!

Definitely agree, it would be helpful to have some testing in the mountains. Maybe, the next best would be some MN & MI guys riding 500's and 600's in the flatlands...which would have similar horsepower to our 800's up high.

Just a thought.

speaking of difference size engines....i also found this to be interesting about the X-1 kit. this is what mel from X-1 emailed me...

We only have one spring and helix profile (other than the engine
reverse notched helix). Believe it or not, we use the same helix from
a 570 fan up to a mod 1000. Some of the 600's require a lighter
secondary spring.

Yes your reverse will work with our reverse notch helix.

There is no adjustment provided with our standard kit, however I have
had the thought of adding adjustment screws to the end cap so it would
allow an quick and easy way to adjust spring tension. There may not be
enough room between the end cap and the side cover for the screws to
clear. You could use spacers to increase the pressure, but you should
not have to.

i like how other brands have multiple helix options available and an adjustable outer spring cover for fine tuning. the x-1 has neither of these...

this is a little more info he emailed me

I personally have not tested our setup in the mountains. I do have a
few customers that run them in the mountains and have liked the
performance.
I believe our setup would shine in the mountains and here's why. You
want as much track horsepower as you can get. We had a shop dyno test
our setup and found that it produced 2 track horsepower more over a
really good clutch setup.
You want a very quick off/on throttle response. Our setup has a
instant throttle response. Belt life should improve along with
decreased belt and clutch temperatures.

Hey Troyburt,
Looks like we're from the same part of the country. I'm heading to the west coast to the Main River area in early Feb (1-5), so I expect the powder to be really starting to pile up by then. What part of the island do you live and where do you do most of your sledding. Did you have a black 700 xfire for sale last year?

hey, i am living in port blandford now but not liking the snow condition's here!

i ride a lot over around deer lake, corner brook area.

no i didn't have a 700 for sale.

anyone else pull the trigger on this kit? Im really likeing what I hear but I would like to hear that someone that rides 7-8k likes it

I bought one this year and just came back from Valemount 6-7500 ft . I have a 07 M8 w SLP pipe kit and timber intake I ran 70gr Cat weights and seen 8000rpm everytime I looked. I do not run a PC or BD and Im pretty sure Im running fat so ,,,,, The kit is backwards when you look at the parts but Mel is onto something. I think the kit rocks and the back shift is Very good even when coasting down hill.

Any update on this, i'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this kit for this upcoming season. (09 xf 800 w/2.5" PC) Im a flat lander in MN, i also go to MI and love to boondock. I also plan to head out west this yr and would like to hear feedback on how it performs in the 8-10,000'

anyone still intersted in the formula X-1 setup I have found a lot of info over on hard core sledder, also Mel has a fix for the 1100 turbo cats with belt issues and a hub fix for worn dimond drives. this guy is the real thing best kept secert around he pretty much stays on hard core .

Yes, some real world mountain testing results vs. some know quantities used out west (RK TEK, Stock, BDX) would be great to see. The secondary sounds very promising.

Id say someone has to try it. I have it my crossfire and absolutely love it, but Im a flatlander so I cant say how it would work in the mountains. I wil say it pulls hard and backshifts hard. Mel is excellent to work with.

Thanks MJA. Maybe you should send me (or someone out west) your secondary to test in the mountains? :face-icon-small-win With the guarantee of a thorough report of its effectiveness in the steep and deep.

Got on ordered for mountain riding.

I have one on order that should be here within a week or so to do some real mountain testing here in Alaska. Lots of steep and deep with a variety of riding conditions on a 08M8. I look forward to trying it out and seeing how it works with MDS weights as well.Ill post more info as soon as I get the kit in and put a day on the snow

If I didn't have a trip planned in 2 weeks Id be all over shipping to you. I should have thought of this a month ago.

Im running mine with the Magna Force arms and Cutlers gold spring. For flat land it loves having weight thrown at it.

What did you end up with weight? (grams per weight)
What sled?

Let us know how it works in the steep and deep, flat land it works great, I love the fast backshifting.

77.5 grams, I ran from heel to tip 3,2,1,2. Sled is a 2011 crossfire 8 sp with 2.25 track and 57/63 gearing. Also I run the 046 belt. Mels kit tears up the 060's and the 046's are cheaper.
