Any SandRail Guys on here? Dune Buggy?

I have to admit the sand is funner than the snow...its a weekend trip instead of a day trip for the same cost....

Been waiting for you to show up and post your .02, colorado4fun says you got a sick rail :)

Graveler, its not money, Id rather just dump my money into another sport is all. Try something else. There was a guy building a sled that I wanted to buy in the norther part of Utah that sorta just left me high and dry, and in the mean time I had my sled up for sale, which I have not rode for the past month and a half and the guy just left me high and dry. Pissed me off. I got 600 turboed miles in this year and 1600 in last year. Im fine :)

Stripe, yes, im quitting. Actually, if any of you are interested, I have a brand new Medium orange and black tek vest that was worn once and I put it away. I ride with just a sweat shirt and I didnt like the way it felt. Its free if any of you want it.

I vote build a desert truck, saind rails are cool but a well built truck will go good in the sand too..

Here's a fine example, this is my friend Jason's truck built by Baker Motorsports in So Cal:

Next to the Baker Explorer:

I'm a bit biast so I would suggest starting with a 84-88 Ford Ranger extra cab 2wd or 4wd you decide, just my 02

Those look pretty sweet. Got any more info? what kind of power do they produce?

Id like to make something in the 1200lb range with about 300-600hp. I'm a little Naive on the topic so the more you can teach the better.

Those desert trucks are upwards of 3,000 lbs and 5-750 hp, and somewhere in the $75,000 range, especially the 4wd. To get down in the 1200 lbs range, don't even look at a desert truck, or anything with a body aside from sheet aluminum! 3-600 hp is pretty easy out of a rice rocket motor, and they are LIGHT!!!!!

Buddy had one of these. Hayabusa powered and sick fast...

It's shorter than most rails, but more than made up for it with power. Plus, you would be amazed how much sand rails cost in the long haul when you start looking at Northstar V8's and Subaru STI motors. He walked out of the Anaheim Sand Show (a HUGE show for this stuff) with this exact car for $21k. If I was going to get a rail, I would definitely get one of these. Best bang for the buck.

Ok I was in a shop today that had some small sandrails one had a bombadier moter in it and the other had an rx1 motor there were several in there but the guy working on them said they built one and was not sure where the rest came from. I have a 600cc arctic cat motor that could use a home.

When my snowmobile sells I dont think I will get back into this sport for quite awhile if ever. I want a new project. So, Sandrail guys, got anything good? Details?

Also, anyone out there, whats a good next project? Have built quite a few guns but dont have anything up my sleeve yet for a gun project, sorta in a limbo season right now.

Where are you gonna use a sand rail in Gillette Wyoming

There aren't any dunes up there

But if there are, how big, and can you go ride them? I might have to come up there to check them out if there are dunes up there next time I'm home ... I've just never heard about any dunes up in that part of the state?

look up sandobsession.com link to a bunch of builders. get a sand rail with twin turbo Lt-2 engine around 800 hp 25" of travel for about 125,000. there awsome, i'am saving for one right now

i have some uncles that are big into mud dragging and 2 of them have railcars. the cars can tear through a 150 ft track of soup and mud in less than 3 seconds. i may be able to find some info for ya on them but they are made to go through mud. if i recall correctly i think they said something about pushing 650-700 hp also but dont quote me on that

I build and sell sandcars. Do you want to have a brand new car built or buy a used car? Heres my current build for a customer, badest one to date.

dude you cant retire from sledding!
when you get this thing built bring it out to St. Anthony dunes, you got a place to stay up there if you let me take it for a spin :)

Its an Extreme Performance chassis Double Throw Down II (DTDII) dual purpose car, sand and dirt. Powered by a Kenny Bell supercharged LS7 (427ci) motor, about 1000 hp. Power runs through a Mendeola S4D transaxle (sequentialy shifted trans, similar to a bike). 24" of suspension travel with triple bypass shocks on all 4 corners. Lots of other goodies like full stereo system, car to car comm, GPS, Racepack gauge, ect. This is the badest car I have built yet. About $160,000. Chassis will be powdered lollypop red with tons of chrome and some wild paint on the tin.

Just want to try a new sport. I dump gobbbs of money into sledding, its fun, but im getting bored with it, getting bored with my sled. I feel like I could be dumping all this money into something else

I can hear ya on that. Been kicking around ideas, not dumping sledding but picking something else up. No sand rails for me though. Maybe mountain biking, I'd try surfing if I was near a coast.

I can't wait to hear what you decide.
