When my snowmobile sells I dont think I will get back into this sport for quite awhile if ever. I want a new project. So, Sandrail guys, got anything good? Details?

Also, anyone out there, whats a good next project? Have built quite a few guns but dont have anything up my sleeve yet for a gun project, sorta in a limbo season right now.

Sandrails are the shiznits mang. My dad's got one based on the VW engine that runs like a raped ape. Its way fun to run in the snow.

You want to build a long travel? 2 or 4 person? turbo'd? big block? sled engine? etc.

Just want to try a new sport. I dump gobbbs of money into sledding, its fun, but im getting bored with it, getting bored with my sled. I feel like I could be dumping all this money into something else

Sandrails come to mind. Lots of things come to mind. I feel like updating my truck, trying a dirtbike? Buying more land? Hell I dunno. I might just transfer in my company and try a new area and a different life.

man you sound pretty restless nate.:(

Sand rails are a ton of fun, starting mine this summer, hopefully! My cousin builds them in Utah, upwards of 100 grand long travel sand cars. He still runs his older car, it was featured in Sand Sports about a year ago. Turbo VW on nitrous, 450 hp before the button and the car weighs less than 750 lbs WET! Lets just say its quick.

Details man, need lots and lots and lots of details. Who to talk to, prices, specs, spill the beans brotherin

I feel I can build something alot cheaper. What I would really really really enjoy building, would be a 2 seater, but an apex motor with a propane kit from Story. It wouldnt be just a dune car though, just about an everything off road, would need alot of suspension travel, all independent.

There is a catch though, my good friends and co-workers are into mud boggs and what not. My idea, cause they are cocky and have been kickin some azz, I want to take a light frame, with paddle tires, and make soo much power before it hits the mudd that it just skips acrossed.

Just an idea. I want an everything sort of car :) I want to build the shhit outta something

Ive already started building a new rifle, it has only been done by a few guys in the world but have not been much successful, I think with my resources in the gun world and my ability I can make this work and pick up where they have left off

You would be surprised how little suspension travel you need. My dad's has the same travel as an OEM Beetle from the 70's and it does just fine. We tear it up in the hills around Evanston. If you are going to build your own do some google searches, there are tons of sites that offer stuff all the way from plans up to frame kits with pre-bent pieces. If it was me, I would try and get my hands on a Chenowth frame, either the Mellinium Single Seater or the Mellinium Dual Seater. Pretty much the civilian version of the Desert Patrol Vehicle.

I've seen guys run just normal VW based sandrails in mud bogs and do damned good. The one my dad has is light enough that the two of us can pick it up and move it if we get stuck. It has the standard VW engine punched out as big as it can go with custom ground cams, and a custom built transaxle. Thing gets damned spooky in third gear, and I only feel good hitting fourth on pavement or sand.

Go with a VW based rail. Parts available in most junkyards, capable of doing just about anything, and easily repaired to boot.

you are a punk. :p

Sand Rail

We used to build buggies, left and right, through them together for under $500 and beat the crap out of them in the mountains. This is how my cousin got into it, but he took it alot farther. He regularly builds 50-100 thousand dollar cars, 26" of travel and over a 1,000 hp. His personal car was a little different. 100" wheel base, 2 seater, 16" wheel travel front and back, and because he is a VW faithful, he built the Scat based VW type II for it, but bored bigger and stroked it farther, ran a Garrett turbo, I can't remember but somewhere around 20lbs of boost, and 450 hp before the 200+ shot of nitrous. VW motors can be tricky to build because they're air cooled, but he got that thing dialed in. At just over 750lbs wet, it will scare just about everyone who gets in the passenger seat, maybe thats because its been on its lid more than a few times, but wicked fast none the less!:D

One thing I sould warn about VW engines, they are cheap to build, but have there disadvantages. Big bores are somewhat unreliable, because they are air cooled, they develope hot spots, warp the cylinder walls, and loose compression. The heads were a big disadvantage, again to being air cooled. Hot spots caused detonation and poor flow patterns in stock, even dual port heads can be restrictive. The cases also have a hard time handling big stroke. The best thing I could advise in going with a VW motor is to either buy a crate engine or spend the money on reinforced cases and better heads, look into Scat, lots of people know them for domestics,(have a Scat stroker crank in my 396!) but they did a lot of hard work in VW motors and built some of the best VW parts money could buy! Sand rails are fun mostly because you can scare more people than just yourself!

I vote build a desert truck, saind rails are cool but a well built truck will go good in the sand too..

Here's a fine example, this is my friend Jason's truck built by Baker Motorsports in So Cal:
