Another UTAH SW Pic of the Week

ACG - You seem to know the area a bit, been to Big Elk Lake or Erickson Lake? How about Anchor Lake?? Been up through the Notch??

I have been into big elk and erickson basins quite a few times during the summer for camping and fishing. Looks like a pretty hairy area to take sleds.......but I could be wrong. Doesn't seem to easily accessible at least from the shingle creek road and trailhead that we take in.

I know there's an area just North of Anchor he likes.:D

Are you sure about Anchor?? The area North of Anchor is basically the drainage into Holiday Park. Also, Anchor is a quite a ways in and have not seen too many people that far back and the ones I have usually followed our tracks in. I am betting you mean the area around Watson, lots of people circle Watson and there is some good riding. The Notch is on the north side of Watson.

Got to bring your "A" game!! :D Actually I have taken quite a few people in, including my dad and he is an old guy. :) But I would never attempt to take a novice rider in there.

Sorry, West of Anchor. H---- K------.
I only know 2 people that have ever ridden in there.
Pretty sure you access it off the Smith and Morehouse trail

Yep, know the area well!! Was riding back there in the early 90's on my Indy 650.

Pic 1 - H___'s K_____ is accessed from the drainage to the right (this is the Smith and Morehouse Trail). I have always wanted to drop in from the Anchor side, but no one would follow and I wasn't going alone!!

Pic 2 - Up above Anchor looking back toward Watson.

Pic 3 - Back behind The Notch, sitting on Ibantik Lake.

These pics were taken in '01. Havent rode up there much the last few years. Showed Rockstar around up until he got hurt.

its doable. I have pictures...

There are two ways in from shingle creek... one involves some seriously technical chute climbing, with some serious technical down hill decents. The other way is to skirt the west ridge of erickson and drop in down a chute...

The more snow up there the easier these ways become. But climbing 700 feet up a chute, sidehilling left over a 50 foot cliff, climbing another 100 feet, sidehilling back right over a 100 foot cliff and onto the razor ridge isnt for everyone... and yes its about the same going down the other side... ski brakes required...

also norway flatts is posted as cross country skier only. Thats the best direct access to the "good riding". Its usually melted by the time i ride the high uintas anyways...

Not sure where Anchor is but have been to pic 1 with ACG from mirror lake highway by way of trial lake

just a few i have at work from may 2008

Pic 3210 is the towers in east shingle creek

3209 is shingle creek

3207 is the two ways i have come back out of there... (you will also note that this is the same as CCpowders pic 1, the top of smith and moorehouse)

Of course everyone is welcome for the high lake tour in late april/may

Sounds like a fun adventure to me. I'm in......i usually consider myself to be one that can hold my own. This would be a good test.

one more pic of the climb into east shingle creek off the northeast face of wall mountain. ridiculously steep and just as technical dropping into the other side...

Copy of P1011588.jpg

That's got to be much steeper than it looks in the Pic......

Can't find it on Google though. :(

Map

Ok i got out the map and drew some terrible little squiggleys on it...

The green circle is the Towers in Shingle creek
The blue route is the safe way to get there
The yellow circle is Island Peak/cone peak
The other yellow lines are passes over the ridges i consider to be doable, but dangerous, exercise extreme caution.

The red line is the pass i first took to get back into shingle creek (the one i have posted above). Its insane and i dont recommend it unless your low on fuel, want to wreck your sled miles from anything, or just have a death wish... :D

This area is definately a test for any rider. Like Phatty said, you can get into lots of trouble if your not careful, but it is an amazing place to ride. Like Phatty, I usually ride it in the Spring time. Remember, your riding around or above 10,000' all day.

I would be happy to take any who wants to go, but not going to take a group of more than 4-5, too easy to get people lost.

Its the Shingle Creek road I have taken in and out. Isn't this the road that starts as you make the bend?? Or is that the Upper Setting road??

I believe thats the upper setting road.

Shingle creek is just a hiking trail in the summer. I could be wrong, but i think both upper setting and Norway flats road are both "non motorized" ski trails in the winter. The norway flats road starts pretty close to the big parking lot in the open meadow. Its still another 4-5 miles to the soapstone parking lot (the one with all the cliffs above it)

edit: I stand corrected: norway flats road is open to OHV winter use. Spring canyon (north fork) road is the one thats closed to sleds...
so Shingle creek, Spring Canyon (north fork) and yellow pine trailheads are reserved for xcountry skiers. Fortunautly those boundries only go up those canyons a mile or two so snowmobiling is allowed in the heads of those canyone.

I have the map if anyone wants them emailed to you...

Ok, that makes sense. Seems like most of the drainages are off limits, but the ridgelines are still accessible.

We need to hook and go ride that area!! I still want to make my way back toward Hoyt!! Have you ridden above Weller's toward Hoyt??

Note: The Spring Canyon (North Fork) that Phatty talks about is different from the Spring Canyon that has been discussed that is about 5 miles up from the gate.

Yea we do need to hit this area up. Late april / early may i usually do about a 70-80 mile loop

I have ridden from wellers shop to hoyts, over to duke, dropping into shingle and into erickson. and ridden from MLH back into dukes, but never done either way the full distance... might try it in march if the snow is good and snow pack is deep. you up for it? :D
