another ride, another belt...

Haven't had a problem with anything....

...yet! I've only got 135 miles so far but my belt looks great still. of course i'm still taking it easy for the most part. i'm gonna be pissed if i just bought a sled for over 10k and its gonna have problems. i didn't burn one belt last year on my '02 RMK with about 600 miles.

3 rides, 2 belts... gotta love the xp...

oh didnt you wash your belts, ride for 15min and let cool and repeat all day long? thats a joke,i guess people wouldnt blow belts if you spent more time looking at it then riding! hey heres a new fix, leave it in the back of your truck, get your buddy to drive around well you sit on it, sounds like fun, belt problem fixed! for the record tried every stupid idea suggested on here with out any luck! 19 tooth gear sucked( still smoken hot, no track speed) vented, removed foam and plastic, now re weighted clutch. anyone else got the magical fix?

Add primary weight. Have you done this yet?

You could be right about the belts,,,I believe it's an engine issue,,,I think the engine makes a harmonic vibration that damages the clutch and creates heat in the belt, which also accounts for some of the engine failures last year. I think you'll see that engine scrapped in favor of a new one by next year.

I asked this before but nobody really said anythig, I have a 146X and the thing seem to put my feet to sleep with the way it vibrates. Anybody else have this problem? Alot more vibe than my previous Rev.

not bad after adding extra primary clutch weight. Let me guess, about 6000-6500 rpm and going slow, stuck in a lower gear ratio?

If we add primary weight, what must we do to still get our rpm where it needs to be? Lighter spring or what? I am trying to figure out this clutching and just not sure what to do yet. I have pulled about 2" of cord out of my belt, but not full blown yet. I am willing to tinker, but would like to know what changes effect what as these clutches are something new to me.

Thanks

What clicker # are you on now?? Add weight until it pulls down to 8000-8100 on a steep/deep climb on clicker 3-4-5

I haven't had a chance to work on the new Summit yet but my ridding buddy from work just got his new Xp and the dealer here said the only fix he's found for the belt problem is the motor mounts are all knotched except for one to move the engine, from what i gathered is to knotch the hole so the engine can be slid over. I take it that the belt angle must have been off from the factory (How they managed that I couldn't tell you). I would say look into it a little before going out and drilling the motor mounts. But thats what i got out of a brief convo about the belt problem when i asked him about it. I would say maybe give the dealer here a call if you are haveing problems http://www.pinehurstperformance.com/ the number is on the website maybe he can explain it to you.

Phatty how many miles do you have on? I have over 80 miles now, still my first belt (knock on wood). My M1000 seemed to roast a belt ever other ride last year. Hope this year isnt the same. Cleaned my clutches and scrubbed the belt before I rode my XP the first time. First ride was 15 easy trail miles on and off the throttle. Hope this works. My 19T top is on the way. Riding at 9000ft mostly, clickers on 3 now.

Mitsubishi makes both Skidoo & Yamaha belts.

ot

...means nothing. Bitsumishi could have made belts for the CVT in the Ford Freestar. But they would have made a completely different belt for that just like they make two vastly different sled belts. Just becuz they make them in the same company (not necessarily even the same factory) means nothing. Ski Doo would have spec'd a certain compound, size, etc, while Yamaha would have done the same. If they were the same, you should be able to pick up a Yamaha belt and throw it on the XP. Now that gives me an idea. Can someone give me the outer circumference of the XP belt (entire distance around the outside of the belt (probably something like 35-40 inches)? I also need the top width of the belt. Both measurements in inches please. I can give you some #'s from the Carlisle catalogue for belts that would be close. Not sure about the sheave angle, the 08 XP's aren't listed yet, anyone know if it is the same? I think it might be.

Alot of the 154XP's came with the 146 gearing---needs to be taken out.
Personally I would be running the 19 tooth for the 163 in any of them.

Also--when the engine starts cranking out the HP--Add weight to the primary. Do not let this engine run up at 8400 to 8500 RPM--It will cost-and the deaaler can see where the RPM has been running--It can result in a big owe--eeee for the wallet.

Venting would not hurt either.

Choices

You chose to buy an xp cuz it was cheaper than a turbo yamaha, do some math
1-XP + (1 belt per ride at $160 ea x 20 Rides per year x 3 years) = A turboed yamaha and way less bullship

Just a thought for all you die hard scud fans that say its stupid to spend $6000.00 on a turbo kit, but if you would have spent the six grand in the first place you prolly would be way happier. Nothing worse than a bluebird pow day and a sled that won't perform & keeps smoking belts!:p

Ignorant statement--Not all the XP's are having this issue--In fact--very few are.

Why do so many of you Yamaha guys want everyone to drop their sleds and do the samething you did??

If we wanted to ----WE WOULD!!!

1st of all, you must be buying your SD belts in Canada, and your turbo's in Mexico, because in the states, belts MSRP for $95, and Turbo's for right around $8500 installed. 4 rides so far, and my belt looks brand new still. Not 1 cord coming out. Maybe I'll just go sell it, and come up with another 10 grand for a Yamaha turbo, because you said it was the only logical thing to do.

Hey guys loosen up its just a different way of looking at things, i could care less if you bought a turbo yamaha, in fact if you don't you'll just be another XP for me to spank! anyway its all in fun right, thats what the scud guys say when they come bashin on the heavy yammi's.

well we put another 30 miles in of straight up and down today and... one belt had threads poping out all over the place after cutting several we decided in the severity of the area a blown belt could lead to hitting rocks or trees or ending up in some crazy gully so it was replaced. Not another blown belt, but replaced.

rich, were just under 200 miles on the xp... oh the insanity!

For all the bashers out there i would say 90% of the people do not ride their sleds the way this xp is being treated... if you do then i feel bad for your sled :( I personally love the sled, just needs some vents and clutching to keep a belt in place for 4-500 miles...

also having a 146 i noticed i could only pull 75 mph in the straight away with low rpm around 7500. subtracting a tooth in the chain case made the motor capeable of winding out to proper r's and 100 mph on fresh groomed flat trail. no longer blowing belts cause everything is now shifting properly instead of not being able to pull the gears. keep close tabs on your goofy qrs plastic nonsense, mine likes to come loose rarely but... it does deliver more horse than a lot of other secondarys. 130 mi on current belt, still looks new.

Thats not the reason for the getting past the "wall" of the first miles only going 60-70 mph, its because the timing is retarded until you get about 80-90 miles on these sleds, then they wake up. All 4 of ours did that, (2) were re-geared from the git go, (2) were stock gearing, they all hit the "wall" of only going 65 ish until 90 miles, then OMFG!:D:D:D
