Aftermath of a tether failure...

I use this and it have never failed on me... :face-icon-small-coo

Yup, the key is to get one with an o-ring to keep moisture out which freezes and causes the failure. I use the Gunnar version (made in USA) which has the o-ring. The Pro version is made in China and has no o-ring; I guess it works for ATV's but should be banned for sleds!

Have FUN!

G MAN

Thx for info. Very helpful!

theletup: thx for the thread, should help a lot of people on here. Much appreciated.

Who stands up for you

"I really hate lawyers and the whole lawsuit epidemic in this country..."

The only people in this country who stand up for the little guy are lawyers. Obviously his insurance adjuster is not looking out for him, the Manufacturer that designed and sold a defective tether has not offered to pay for the sled, the TSS failed but do you think Polaris is going to pay? Ask yourself, aside from the silly TV shows you have seen and the propaganda on talk radio, do you know anyone that got more than they deserved out of a lawsuit? On the other-hand, how many people have been screwed over by an insurance company?

PS- Very lucky no injuries- a sled is cheap compared to a trip to the hospital.

got it right

Mr 2Deep has it right. If companies would stand behind products they manufacture and/or sell there would be a lot less 'scumbag' lawyers. Unfortunataly, they are a necessary evil.

I used the spi tether ( the one for the skidoo ) on my wifes sled. I mounted it on the counsel just below the switches. The main part of the tether is located on the inside of engine compartment and gets enough heat from engine I do not think it could freeze up. I also keep a small pocket sized spray can of lock deicer with me. At first sign of any throttle freezing I give it a shot and no more problems. The deicer also has some lube and also a drying agent for the water to help things out. Have never had to use it on our pros, but our doo's needed it often. Friends doo was causing him problems and when he told me I sprayed it and all was good for the rest of the day. Also it does not cause any issues with the cable.

Dude so sorry to hear about the loss of your sled, man thats a bummer I have fell off my sled and helplessly watched it roll down hill and so far luckily didn`t hit anything if my tether that I always wear would of failed then my sled would of made it to the trees that it luckily stopped before hitting.

Glad to hear you weren`t hurt,

Good Luck, Wildcard

Sure it is but who has time to hit it in emergency situations, or as your getting throw off that is what the tethor is for so as your fallin away from the sled the tethor disconnects as you distance yourself from the sled.

Most guys actually put a couple O-rings under the base of the kill switch, Like everyone I ride with so you have to hold the kill switch down for a few seconds to kill the engine, many times while riding the sled its easy to accidently hit the kill switch while throwin the sled around and kill the engine loosing your maneuver which gets you stuck or headed back down etc...

My 02. Wildcard

Sorry to hear about your sled, but glad your ok and that this dealer hooked you up. Sounds like a good place!
FYI. One of our local dealers in Marquette MI (Power Sports) has a 2013 Pro RMK with the same story. Im thinking it is a pretty interesting coincidence that they both had the throttles stick WO and the tether failing. Makes me wonder what is going on with the throttle sticking like previous posts. The sled owner needs a new tunnel and some plastic I think. I would make a great Mod sled at this stage, but he wants to sell it because he wants a stock sled. Anyone interested can contact them if its not gone yet.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. Would you be interested in selling your motor from the wrecked sled? I had a rod failure and am looking for a 2011 pro 800 motor

Why aren't tethers stock on Polaris or Arctic Cats? Ski doo has had them for at least 10 years. Do the manufacturers have a reason other than cost? Also personally I don't believe a tether which requires any moving parts (o-ring or not) to activate is suitable for snowmobiling. Under the right conditions water can infiltrate and freeze anywhere.

theletup glad your back on the snow. I've watched my sleds ghost ride on more than one occassion luckily never WOT so damage has been kept relatively minimal. And after finding a sled track skid mark on my backpack that I wasn't sure how or when it exactly got there I have always worn my tether.

D8 Crazy

Sorry for your loss! I had the same thing happen to my 08 Dragon just 2 weeks out of the box! It was my left hand gold finger that froze up on mine and I did not have a tether at that time. Thanks to a good wife who talked me into getting insurance on my sled for the first time I had mine fixed and riding again in 2 weeks. My sled went well over 200 yards down the hill wide open before hitting trees and it wiped out all the A arms both front walker evans, bumper rails, fenders, and the hood. I changed my way of thinking after that, no more left hand throttle and a tether that works and insurance for sure. I am surprised how much damage was done to your sled but all this light weight stuff just makes them weaker. I ride a 12 pro now with the big after market bumper on the front. I use my tether to turn mine off when I ride so maybe thats another good habit to get into. I did have a limb come thru the handle bars this year and stretched the throttle cable to wide open and the tether worked that time. Live and learn but live first to learn another day!:face-icon-small-hap

Just an FYI...I have been having problems with the stock Polaris tether I got from Michelle at OTS not working properly either...

Sometimes it works...others it doesn't...

Not a great feeling honestly!!!

Me too, my next day off I'm pulling mine and figuring out what the issue is.

Fell off while carving last trip up, ended up with my knee stuck touching the track. Pulled the tether instantly but she didn't turn off for a minute or so. Track ground to a stop on my knee, felt very lucky nothing worse then a bruise out of that one. Inspected the tether, no ice build up, everything plugged in, etc. Won't be riding without it fixed though.

theletup- Glad you are ok and you are back on the snow!

That is a terrible day man had the same thing happen to a 08 with no tether then bought this pro designs for my new pro how ironic and ya snow freezes in it causing the plunger to not retract and it rusts on the inside after sitting for periods then doesn't ground and fails am looking for a good replacement option!
