'92 Prowler vs RT1000

So I am still looking at newer sleds as the few I have looked at sold before I could see them and make an offer. i have been looking at 800's but recently found a 05 1000 for $5000 with a can, risers and less than 600mi. i know this sled is heavy(have read most threads on them) but wouldnt it handle much better than the 440 prowler? Also I feel I would be able to handle the weight as I am 6' and weigh around 185-190. I just dont know about the brute power compared to the prowler. I figured that I can go easy on the throttle till I get more used to it. Anyone think that I should stay away from this and just look at 800 Summits or would the RT be alright?

I have enjoyed my RT 1000 since the day i clutched it so. And 5000 for one with only 600miles is pretty good i think. It will ride SOO much smoother then your old prowler and the power will be unbeliavble. Hey if its too much for yah just unplug one spark plug should be comparable to the old sled :)

onda',

If you have the fundage, get it. You will need better ski's but other than that, you should be set. Start working on your forearm strength so you can hold on to it once pegged.....

Good luck!

Thanks again for the input. Motley I will tell ya the location after I look at it but hopefully by then it will be in McCall or Priest Lake and I'll be the owner. If I buy it it will probably be for sale after next season as I will be going down south for training with the Air Force. Hopefully the guy sellin it though sends me pics soon.

Another quick question. What is everybodys opinion on the 151 vs 162" track. I think i would be fine with the 151 but since the rt is heavier is it wiser to go with the 162?

Youll be fine with a 151" but, depending on your riding style...maybe it wouldnt hurt to go 162"......

I love my RT...I went from a 151 to a 144....found the RT with a 144 was nimble and you couldnt even notice the weight when tossing it around...

things to do on this sled...

Get the VIN# and call your local dealer and make sure all the updates have been done on it...07 mapping with mid alt

then when you buy it these are things to do...

-check the battery for 12.5V or better...these sleds run like crap if the battery is weak
-Change Skis (it has Simmons so those are great skis)
-Clutch Kit (Dynamo Joes is the one I have and love it...no exp with the others)
-start sheading weight...Remove rear cooler (05's Only), Remove plastic over the clutches if not done already, remove all the foam...

there are many other little things to do...but clutching is the most important...do that before anything and you will never part with this machine..

Stiffler thanks for the input. I have seen your sled on here and dootalk. I must say it is very nice. The sled has also had some clutch work done, more weight and different spring, but am not sure. The guy says he has it all on paper though. One question, are the updates covered by doo or are do I need to pay for them?

thx...and you need to pay for them...depends on your dealer as well...some will just walk out with their computer and program your sled and let you go for free...it only takes them like 10 mins to do...others will charge you 1/2 an hour or so...like $40-50 bucks...all they have to do is program it...

good luck man...and $5000 sounds like a great deal...Mine was $8600 last year when i bought it...that is Canadian..

How difficult is it to take the rear cooler out and how much weight do you save. I probably wont be able to do this until the summer when there is no snow and I have time. Also how reliable are the lighter weight batteries you can get for these?

rear cooler is easy to remove...and alot of places stopped selling the light weight batteries cause there was problems...but at the dealer the battery is only like $35 bucks for the stock one and the stock one is barely 4 lbs...I bought one from Napa which is the same as stock for $30 and like I said barely 4 lbs...

the rear cooler removed will save you around 7lbs thats including the extra fluid as parts...if you do it the way I did you will save an additional 3 lbs...

when I bought the sled the cooler was already removed so not sure how hard it is...but should be to hard....on the back of the tunnel you will have something that looks like this

rearcoolermr6.jpg

what I did was remove all the parts and then the part that is circled in red...in the middle of that tube there is an aluminum block, I drilled a hole through there so that the coolant would pass through...

what most people do to remove the cooler is they remove 19-20 part and then join numbers 22 together with a piece of coolant hose and clamp them off...

with mine done the way it is...I have had no cooling issues and I have ridin in minimal snow conditions...

I do have ice scratchers tho..which I recommend...

Hope this helps a bit..

Stiff

mine when it was finished looked like this...In the first pic just behind the tunnel you can see the red tube...that is the tube used to join #22 together....

Well went and picked up the RT on friday and rode it Sat and today in McCall where we found around 2.5ft of powder today. All I can say is amazing. I could not feel the weight (as long as it was not stuck) and cant believe how responsive the chassis is. My buddy said it carved easier than his Rev800 and he is a decent rider. Overall I am very pleased with the sled and hope I can get a few more rides in before the snow is gone.
