858 Needs More Air!!

Epic day in Cooke City today. Sled ran great when the intakes were not plugged. On my ascender I have the Speedwerx high flow intake kit and never had an issue with the intake after installing that kit.

Has anyone found any good spots to open up the Catalyst intake/upper plenum?

Fire n’ ice sells some intake vents that adds a vent to the flat spots in front of and behind the stock intakes, but I don’t know how much it would help with snow plugging the intake being in basically the same location as stock.

Vern there is an auxiliary air intake under the hood with a reed valve to open and pull under hood air when vents are plugged. I’m considering the fire and ice ones but only in hopes they are better than the Cat frog skins

I will consider them if I have issues or tear the stockers, but past experience with framed vents like those has been that the lip actually holds more snow on the vents.

I ordered a set and that is exactly what I’m worried about. 😳

One triangle frogskin is around $40 with shipping. Do yourself a favor and and get the fire n ice. Installed them before I rode the sled. They work great! Don't have to worry about rolling your sled over and ripping a vent.

I remember dealing with that on my m7 when they had plastic framed vents and later switched to the stick on style which was much better. Hopefully it’s not to bad with the fire n ice with the extra surface area.

I have Fire N Ice installed - I actually installed them backwards thinking the frame would be a better mating surface with adhesive and the mesh would be better protection outside. Obviously wasn't thinking, the bigger mesh holes love to hold snow. I'm going to reverse them, but know the frames will also hold snow, but may respond better to sweeping the vents to clear the snow. The intake location is not conducive to shedding snow, it sits right on the intakes and they hold them there along with the entire top of the hood and gauge - to Chewy's point, we need to figure out how to get more air to these motors. I do not have these issues with my ascenders and also had the speedwerx kit on one of them.

Just throwing it out there as I haven't been able to ride my catalyst yet, but what about adding some old school bullseye vents to the airbox?

What does the top of the air intake look like under the headlight? Is there space for vents there or more flappy intake deals like the one stock one that’s supposed to open when the outside vents get plugged. I drilled holes and put frog skin over them under the headlight on my old m7 and it seemed to help, but of course you don’t want to constantly be sucking hot under hood air.

IBEX is working on an intake below the headlights. Saw a quick video they posted in a comment on Fakebook. I responded asking for more details. :)

In theory an opening (circle frogskin) right behind these front vents would have the smallest impact from under hood heat. Very similar to the Speedwerx High Flow Kit for the Ascender. Those vents plug pretty quickly in the deep too but maybe a little hot air is better then a full bog?

From what I can see, on the right side only (non exhaust pipe side) there is a good place for 2 round frogzskins. A 2.125" od or 2.5" od 1.75" id where my finger is pointing. And the plane right behind it a 1.675" od 1.25" id round. This should still draw cool air from the front hood vents and not much under hood heat.20250108_141028.jpg

I received my Fire-n-Ice kit yesterday. Looking over the kit, I had a crazy thought. Could you get away with gluing the stock screens/frogskins to the framing of the fire-n-ice intakes? I think the instructions say to remove the stock screens. Why not just glue back over the top of the F-n-I kit? Best of both worlds, more durable, plus easier to whip off. But maybe both installed would restrict airflow to much? Just thinking out loud, thoughts?

Don't know if these would help , have them on my Alpha side panels and seem to have cut down on the overheating a little bit ???

Perfect timing, was just looking at them the other day.

The primary has ground into the plastic a little by where that side mounts, not sure how close it would be.

Are they far enough out so the clutch can not hit the vent or rivets when laying it over?

Well they are on the 20 hardcore and have them on both sides but they are more up front I think than on the 858 . They don't protrude at all to the inside in fact by the time you cut the panels and mount these outside may even be more clearance ! I will take a couple pics tomorrow of the hardcore , but it may be totally different on the 858 , I don't have my 858 yet to compare 😎😎😎

Speedwerx has three vent kits. These are for heat, nothing to do with intake. Here are the other 2:
