858 Mountain Cat Shock Interference

As with previous ATAC sleds, you activate it by pushing the center of the top button on the left, then can scroll left or right to set the dampening. I am guessing with the G8, you can just leave it activated. I always turned mine off after adjusting so I could see my temp gauge.
Yes, that is correct. From what I can tell you can just leave it activated (Green) as you can set up and leave the gauges alone if you chose to. I really like how you can display pretty much all your pertinent info on one screen without having to toggle around. It's a nice feature, and the more I play around with the G8, the more I'm glad that I decided to spend the $ for the Mountain Cat.

One thing that I found out though is that if you do a map update, it takes a REALLY long time, so make sure that you have a fast internet connection. In my case I had to park the sled in my yard so that it was closer to the router in the house. Also, I temporarily changed the screen to sleep time out to 30 minutes so that I could periodically tap the screen to see the download progress bar.
Additionally, I plugged in the USB charger so that the unit's internal battery was fully charged.

Maps do take a bit to download, especially a large block of satellite images at the highest detail. Bring an Android based device there is a way to force the screen to stay on for as long as you have the G8 connected to power (sled battery with electric start, or external power from the USB port).
  • Open the Settings app and go to the About Device page
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap the Build Number multiple times until it says "Developer Options Unlocked"
  • Go back to the main settings page and there will be a new page available called Developer Options. In this page you can toggle "Stay Awake"
Just make sure you turn this option back off after your maps are downloaded as it will eventually run out the battery on your sled if you forget.

Also, if this gauge works like the big Ski-Doo and Polaris gauges it might cause interference with your avalanche beacon in search mode. As far out as 30' with those two when they are powered up. So you want them to shut off reasonably quick or at least know how to shut it down quickly if needed.

Check your 858 Mountain Cats with the IQS shock package. At full extension the Shock reservoir comes in contact with the upper A-arms. Also as was mentioned in another thread the scratcher hits the rear shock adjuster. Supposedly Cat has a fix coming..
clearance is very tight on the new upper arm stock we have seen it tight on all models and did have to make changes to the Zbroz ski shock offering to create some space vs the old chasiss. Good news is that if it only just barely touches at droop it will clear at all other points in the travel but if its hiting hard enough at droop it may cause a mark over time.

T-Rex is working on a set of Catalyst arms too... I put them on my Khaos. I like them because they're field-repairable by swapping out the damaged heim joints. I figure they'll solve this problem too. I think they said they're due in December.

They're waiting for Alternative Impact to finish theirs so they can copy it

I was unaware that they were copies of somebody else's work. That's not cool.

In any case, looks like $500 for a set of just the upper A-arms. Ouch. I think I paid the same for upper and lowers on my Khaos (from T-Rex). What about the Catalyst's lower.... rod/arm thing? Isn't that thing likely to take a beating?

I’m waiting for trenchers to release their’s.
Kesterke really abused them when he was on cat which sold me! I’ve ran them now for 3 yrs with 0 issues on my ascender.

Heard from the dealer today. The fix for this is going to be switching out the reservoir canisters for smaller diameter ones to provide clearance for the a-arm.

Wow... that sounds more complicated than simply redoing the upper arm. I'll just wait and grab a set of aftermarket arms that clear it.

Now how about the clearance issue with the RH ice scratcher against the rear shock? Probably the same thing I bet.

Unfortunately it's not the canister the scratcher hits. It's the electronic 'shifter'IMG_2701.jpeg

I was too lazy to go out and check before posting. Well, in this case I slight bend to the scratcher would probably be a good fix.

On the scratcher issue I bet they tell the dealer to make a slight bend in the scratcher until it clears.

Given that it's spring steel, that could take some work. I tried to bend it myself, and it won't bend unless I get out vice grips or something.

Might be easier bending the holder. I think there is enough clearance with the tunnel to bend it out a bit and that should pull the scratcher away when stowed.

Just makes a guy scratch his head..... and wonder what else was kicked out of the factory overlooked..
I didn't ever hear that the 600 last year had these issues-and same chassis- maybe the 858 have larger reservoirs 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
