800 Recall

Polaris and its
lubrication vendor set out to design a new oil using the already outstanding qualities VES Gold oil provides as the
baseline.

now that is funny right there! i don't care who you are! if the new stuff is based off the old stuff it should probably be kept in the trash. (bold added by me)

Sorry getting off topic, but that is funny. :D Most aftermarket oil manufactures will admit that even their competitors oil will far surpass the needs of the modern 2 stroke. They will also tell you that if you experience an engine failure then most likely something other than the oil has gone terribly wrong. (as we are seeing) The last bottle of VES oil I looked at didn't even have a JASO rating on it. How good is it really?????
So Polaris really wants us to run what we can deduce is an inferior oil with no rating and pay more for it than an oil that is proven to burn cleaner, lubricate better and has a lower cold pour? hmm?

lube tech which is in bloominton mn makes all the oil for polaris, cat, ski-doo, yamaha, harley davidson etc. i trust polaris oil over the $hity amsoil anyday, my dad races vintage sleds and amsoil gave him a bunch of oil to put there sticker on the side of it and he blew 3 motors on it cause the motor would get to hot-switched over to ves and hasnt had a issue yet

VES oil is damn expensive. It's twice the price that I can get Amsoil for. If I rode little than I guess ok, but I try to ride every weekend, at least a tank of gas a day, thats a tank of oil a week, it adds up quick.

This talk of the silencer is new to me, I haven't read anything on it.

Fix on Fail

Hey I just asked this on another thread, but I'm not sure which thread has more current information, is the Recall/Update/Warranty work, "Fix on Fail" only, or can I bring in a running sled for the repair?

Polaris letter

Hooray!!!!:D I finally got my official written notice from Polaris about the 800 recall today in the mail. Hey, Earl, have you got my parts yet?;)

it is not a fix on fail deal. take a running sled in and the new parts will be installed. on the side issue, i'm not an amsoil fan either. ves or amsoil... one in the same to me. i like the good old mineral based oil, NON-synthetic. but then again i have the ability and willingness to clean my power valves rather than rebuild a motor. of course i've never seen the power valves need any more attention using non-synthetic rather than synthetic. in fact compared to ves, the are way better and imo, you get MUCH better lubrication. but, as always, just my o.

The recall is for All 08-09 800 cfi`s regardless if youve had a failure or not. My assault worked great all last season and Im gonna be one of the first ones here to get the recall done as soon as the parts show up.

I had just purchased a new 09 800 Dragon and was looking foreward to pick it up in a couple weeks. After reading this thread I gave the dealer a call and asked them about the recall. They had no knowledge of it as the sled is in a seperate wharehouse but looked it up and said that it does have a recall to rebuild the motor. They can not release the sled before the work is done and are ordering the parts.

Good thing I read this and was able to get the ball rolling!

this is the letter you'll be receiving if anyone is interested (pg 2 is actually shown first)

I wonder what the deal is with the can, mines had the slp on it at low elevation since new and still burnt down 4 times. Now it's got a rattle like a baffles come out.

Stopped in my dealer on Friday my kit is in will take it in sometime next week for install! Looked at the parts they were as stated on here! Hope it works!

Is anyone else apprehensive about getting the update done? I want to get it done and I am sure I will but I am having a little bit of a trust problem at the moment. My sled has ran great at high and low elevations. I do have the slp silencer on it btw. What are your thoughts on this?

I like the idea of the 2 ring pistons. I can't remember if they are going to have a tighter fit or not, but the current pistons have a ton of room to rock in the bore, at least when the pistons are cold. I'm also glad that they are requiring the fuel filter change with the update. I fought intermittant lean issuses all of last winter that I have 95% determined were caused by a low flowing filter on long pulls.

There was a guy on H.C.S. yesterday that mic'd both new vs. old pistons and he posted the exact dimensions, new pistons were considerably LARGER.;)
The NEW piston to wall clearance is now .004":face-icon-small-hap

Hope this helps.

From H.C.S. Sept 10, 2009 Phat Bastard:

Did another 800 today.I miked the pistons I took out and compared to the new ones...Old pistons=84.62 new=84.85..Holy crap thats about .008" diferance betweenthe two.Piston to cyl wall is .004 so this deffinatly tightened these motors up.
