4 stroke questions

Well I am getting a different sled this year and it will be a 4 stroke, but am a little confused about what to get, it will all come down to money of course. But one of my options is an RX-1 with a 162 in an 06 apex skid, there are a couple in the buy and sell here a 2003 and an 04. I am basically wondering how these machines are with the longer tracks, how do they compare to newer sleds as far as ridability (does the track push it??) and how do they climb (is the 162 too much for them??) and any other info you can help me with. thanks for any help.

I don't know to much about the PUSH issue, but I met a guy last year who had a rx1 for a rental and it had 20 000 kms on it. He said he changed the oil 2 times a year and it never gave him a problem. And we all know how rentals are ridden!!!! I think it was a 162 track.
My thoughts are if the engine is solid all the other stuff can, and will be replaced sooner or later anyway.LOL

Hope this helps

4 stroke

Are you going for boost or are you running stock. I heard they are not the sled to buy if you are not running boost. I just bought a boosted 2003 RX-1 this year so this will be my first time on a 4 stroke. I heard Yamaha has the best reliability even if you are running boost. There are better sleds for the money if your not runnig boost..

An 05 has basically the same rear skid geometry as an Apex aside from track length and really was drastically better than the old skid, it transform's the sled
So an RX1 with an Apex skid and 162 is a great sled, I know, I rode one for 2 year's, relocate the strg (Wildchild) and it's a carb'd Apex
Anyway, I have one of these (Turbo'd) at a steal of a deal if yer into it

I ran the '03 that I have stock for a couple of years and then put a 159 Series IV Camoplast under it with rail extensions and a set of Gen I Simmons Skis (huge difference!!!) and it took me most everywhere I wanted to go. The Apex suspension is a whole lot better though there is a night and day difference between the '03 RX-1 and my '07 Apex

Rx1/162

I had (have... but should be picked up and sold this Sat) an 03 RX1 which I put a 162" track on it. I also did an M7 skid... kinda wish I had put in an Apex skid, as the M7 kinda moved back the pivot point on the sled and made it 'turn longer', if that makes sense. Greatly improved the approach angle, and the M7 skid floated like a dream in the bumps, but at times I could tell a difference... reminded me of a friends' sled which had a drop and roll and the skid moved back.

Anyhoo, I did gear it down some, but I did that even w/ the 151" in it. Engine's certainly stout enough to pull the 162" in deep snow... biggest issue w/ it is the weight. If you can pull some weight off (I'd dropped almost 100 pounds) or throw boost on it, really wakes these things up.

I'd go w/ the 04 unless the 03's significantly cheaper... few things better, including updated float bowls, etc. Otherwise, they're great sleds!

BTW, only reason I'm selling mine is to get boosted... am buying Cousin Vinny's 05 Vector w/ a turbo... geometry-wise, is the same frame as the RX1, so arguably I'm not making a chassis-change. It's got a 162" on it as well.

So, welcome to the 4stroke world, and post some pics of your sled once you get it! :beer;
