270 Win or 308 Win????????????

.270 Gets my vote

Some might think it's a little bit lite. But I have seen more elk killed in my family with the old .270 with the 130gr Grand Slam with 55gr of IMR 4350 Powder. Does a dandy job on everything I hunt. Pushes it out around 3000fps and carries pretty good.

.270...you can get or load ammo for anything from coyotes to elk. Right now you can get a box of Federal 130gr. soft points for $12.34 at wally world...at least the one here. I use the Federals loaded with 130gr. nosler ballistic tips for hunting when the shots can reach out there, but the soft points will kill a deer just as dead and for 1/3 the price and make good practice ammo.

you are comparing red apples to green ones. The .270, .308, 30-06, .280, .284 are all so close ballistically it makes no darn difference what you choose. For anyone to say one is underpowered next to the other is ridiculous. I hunted with a .270 for years and it worked great and yes I handload for it but no I don't think it is better. The .308 however does the exact same thing as the .270 but theoretically with more accuracy due to the shorter case design. Those who believe the old wive's tale that a .270 is one of the flattest shooters you can get should really consider opening a reloading manual and reading the truth. Get the one your wife thinks looks pretty.

Want a real gun get a .375 lol

How do you figure that a .270 is underpowered when it is using a 30.06 case and necking it down? You can put as much or more powder in it because the pressures aren't as high, get better velocity and carry a better ballistics coeficient. So are you saying that a bigger bullet is always best? Guess my little ole 6.5 X 300WSM (6.5 Leopard) ain't worth a sh**.

No, I am not saying that a bigger bullet is always best. What I am saying is that you have to take into account things like retained energy at given distances, velocity, etc. for the amount of powder you are using. If you are going to shoot a .270, you might as well shoot a .30-06 and get more retained energy since you are basicly using the same amount of powder. Now, this in NO WAY applies to guns such as the .270 Weatherby, .270 WSM, or ANY of the custom or wildcat rounds as those are very good guns. As far as a .308, sure they have their place and can be a very accurate round. I just feel that they have too much felt recoil versus their effective performance. I have owned guns ranging from the .220 Weatherby Rocket to the .50 BMG. I like them ALL but they all have their place. I have even owned a couple of .270's and .308's but felt they were lacking for what they were.
As far as your 6.5 Leopard, from everything I have read they are a VERY good gun but it also isn't a .270 caliber. It's a .264 (which I am sure you knew)

This is a debate that could rage on for years. Oh wait it has. lol If anyone, and I'm sure many of you have, has spent much time in or around a gun shop these same discussions happen on a daily basis. Which caliber is best for this, that, or another thing will go on long after we all are dead and gone. Men are more opinionated and passionate about our guns than we are about almost anything on the planet. If I know only one thing for sure in life it's that there is no one gun or one caliber for anything. But, of the two you have narrowed it down to either will be a great choice and I think most of us would agree on that......

Sambo is right on this one, We get into in elk camp every year. I have each one and I usually pick up the 308 simply because I have shot it more and have more confidence in the fact that I know where to hold with it. Fact is that at 400 yards if you hit the animals in the vitals with a 308 its dead, hit it in the same spot with a 270..... still dead. The key is pick one in a gun that fits you and shoot the piss out of it till you are comfortable and confident that when you pull the trigger the bullet is going right where you want it to. Just my opinion. But if you really want a gun get a .338 win mag ;)

I own nearly all the guns mentioned in this thread and they are all good enough! The point is if your still hunting with a rifle thats kinda like being a trail riding flatlander IMO!:D Of the two I would go with the 270 but if your looking for an all around gun for the west 30.06 is hard to beat!
