270 Win or 308 Win????????????

.270, great caliber. I have shot one for years. Mine is a pre 64 action, douglas XX air guage heavy barrel in a mcMillian stock. With my hand loads it will shoot 1/2 minute or better.

But the 270wsm would probably be a slightly better choice if I did it again.

I also like the 300wsm for a "one gun" Although I now use a .338-06 ackley improved for the elk.

Do not overlook the 7mm mag as well.

i can't belive everyone hating on the 308 as a former airborne sniper if you can hit a torso size target at 1100 meter thats not "overrated" there are also a lot of different combonations its reliable,it can kill any animal in the U.S there is nothing wrong with it i own a remington 700 bdl custom deluxe in a 270 it is a great shooting gun also. I guess calibers are the same as sled brands and a@@ holes evverone has an opinion

7mm rem mag or a 270 is a good choice..... I shoot 25-06 for antlope and eather a 7mm STW or my 30-378 weatherby for elk

If you aren't a guy that likes to shoot magnums, get a .30-06. I wouldn't have a 270 OR a .308 in the house, and guns are my second passion. Both of them are overrated and underpowered in my opinion.

How do you figure that a .270 is underpowered when it is using a 30.06 case and necking it down? You can put as much or more powder in it because the pressures aren't as high, get better velocity and carry a better ballistics coeficient. So are you saying that a bigger bullet is always best? Guess my little ole 6.5 X 300WSM (6.5 Leopard) ain't worth a sh**.

The .270 is a good caliber but you lose versitility on the higher grain loads. If i could make a suggestion I wouldn't buy either. Buy a 30.06. It is the best overall gun you can buy, you can load it to do just about anything. I load 120 grain bullets and it shoots flat and long, it works great for deer and even the occasional coyote. I hunt elk with a 165 grain. It will knock them down easy with a good placed shot. I also load up 220 grain round nose for bear. If you want something larger than a 30.06 then get a .300 win mag. They kick a little harder but they have the range and knockdown power that you want.

On second thought the .300 win short mag is a good all around gun as well.

280 here too! I have a pretty good gun safe when its late in the season and I need freezer meat I grab my old 280.

That is a tough choice between your 308 & 270. I need more info to offer an opinion. Terran game do you hand load or buy off the shelf. I LOVE my 308. Probably one of the most inheritently accurate rounds out there. Shot placement trumps energy EVERYTIME;)

ok being serious now. i would go for the 270. i shot my first 2 elk with my 270 and then turned it into a 270 gibbs 30.06 casing necked down to a 270, 180 gr. (cruising along about 3800fps)! both were awsome for me! the 270 was a good all around gun for me! just my .02

Correct me if I am wrong...but the 270 is already just a necked down 30.06 case to fit a .277 bullet. I have never seen a .277 diameter bullet in 180gr. , biggest I have seen is 168 gr.

And I call BS on a 180 gr. bullet traveling 3800 fps !!!

You will have to prove that one to me :)

im not really sure on the details. my uncle built it for me and a 7mm 300 for my bro. and i think im wrong on the gr. i think it was 150. STILL...im not really sure. ill ask my dad and get the accurate info lol.

ok. got the info from the person who built it for me. the 270 gibbs is a 30. 06 case with a very short neck and the shoulders have steeper which helps build more pressure. as for speed it was chronographed around 3400fps with a 150 gr. bullet. sorry about the wrong info lol.

I've got a .308 and a 270 WSM (among many others) and had a 270. Of the 3 if I could only have one it would be the 270 wsm. Of the two asked about I'd do the 270 for the versatility that it offers. Yes the .308 will do everything the .270 will but the .270 will take some of the guess work out of those 200-400 yd shots. JMHO

Well like I said.........they had their days....those days were the 80's.

7mm-08 puts up better ballistics, even Ron's 6.5 Leoperd puts the .308 to shame.

Anymore the .308 has moved into the Semi Auto's in current warfare including the Springfield Armory and AR-30's. Police still use the .308's but they never much encounter anything over 300 yards. You see more of 300 Win mag, .338 lapua, and the Cheytac series being .338, .375, and .416 in the military.

The military doesnt use much of the .308 in sniping anymore for a reason.

But will put down most animals, just lobs alot like the .30-06

the best thing you can do is study the maximum point blank range on the 2 you are interested in, it will give you a better understanding of what is really what. for me elk in heavy timber nothing but a 358 win. is accepteable, and that caliber is a 308 necked up to 35 caliber, open ground all i use is a 300 wsm get. a heavy dose of chuck hawks it will help you decide there is a lot to consider to make the right choice for your particular needs

As Nate eluded to, the .308 is a good caliber for weapons such as M-14's and some of the AR .308 variants that are out there. When I think .308 I think tactical, and that is what I use it for. When it comes to hunting as I already mentioned I will use the tried and true .270 & .300 Win Mag. Others have mentioned the 30/06 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that caliber. It all comes down to personal preference. The 7mm Rem mag is another good caliber.

As far at the Win Short Mags go, I like them and was really wanting to buy a gun chambered in .300 WSM. The .270 WSM and .325 WSM are also appealing, I just can't bring myself to buy one though. Some of these new calibers are here one day and gone the next. It could then get hard to find ammunition. Look at the Ultra Mags there popularity went away a few years ago. You can now get such a wide range of bullets for calibers such as .300 Win Mag which will do everything you need to do. That particular caliber has been around for so long, you can always find brass. Stick with what works, they won't let you down.
