2011/12 Snowy Range snow conditions

Want to be sure?

Only come west 1 -2 times a year and first trip sucked. Will it still be pretty good next week, March 8? Forecast doesn't look great. Thanks.

3-1-12hooky day 012.jpgJust got back from an afternoon ride. Snow was good and untouched, about a foot to fooy and a half of new in the last day or two. It was also snowing pretty good when we got back to the car.

I haven't heard too much this week - hopefully there will be some decent spots after this last storm (like what rstibi found)

I think we are going to try and ride on Sunday - let us know what you find!

Make sure you take Jake's batteries from his spot before you ride. :face-icon-small-ton

It's going to be cold and windy tomorrow.

Glad they made it out. Hopefully he keeps his toes.

Thats a good story , thanks for sharing.
A guy who lives in albany once told me , that he had to spend the nite out in the mountains once. and that he dug himself a snow cave , seared the ceiling inside the cave with candles (6" diameter) sat the candle on the ground , allowed it to burn and he thought the candle heated up the snow cave to around 50 degrees. He did mention also that he poked a small hole up through the roof for a vent.
I always wanted to try this but have not.
However i do carry 2 big candles in my survival kit.

Last week in the Snowy Range it was shaping up to be great conditions.
There was snow falling at elevation almost each night. The wind did not stopped up top though. The trees and ridges have all the snow build up. We found about a foot-two on the north ridge.

Here is a great representation of the last couple of days of riding. One tracks through the trees in the deep.

The slopes are still unstable, even more so with the fresh snow and wind loading. We should have skipped this hill. Even though it was small, east of north facing, and wind loading presented avy danger.
Check out this slab the slid off while I was digging. Scary.

This is a secondary crack under the next layer beneath the slab area.

Woke up 3/1 to almost 2 inches here at Ten Mile in, resting at 8500 ft. There should be a new batch of fresh in the hills at elevation.

On to this weeks Update from The Snowy Range and Ten Mile Inn. Making another trip out of the Minnesota area, we picked up a crew in Wyoming, MN at the Polaris plant. Got a sneak peak at the belt driven 2013 Pro RMK, looks sweet. The trip out was brutal through the wind in the mid-west, making for some minor travel delays.

The snow is great in the trees. Out in the open areas there are a ton of huge blow holes. Some of the open areas have blown clean, exposing rock and sage brush. Other areas have accumulated 10 foot drifts. Much of the snow in the open areas and close to the tree lines has compacted in the wind, making some hard areas. The accumulation has built up in the trees in the north east area. Day 1 and 2 were filled with too much fun boondocking in the trees for much picture taking.

Avy Report...
Winds were impressive. Lots of wind loading can be expected near and above treeline today. Winds were strong enough that most aspects will have some fresh wind slabs. Numerous reports of recent natural activity from the Steamboat side of the zone. Much of this coming from near and below treeline.

The weather has been up and down since our arrival on Sunday. Wind, then sunny high 20's, the wind then came back blowing around some of the new precipitation in the brutal cold.

Just got back from riding this morning. Awesome pow in the trees. It was definitely a good tree day. Visibility was crap out in the open. Snow is definitely concrete in areas and my shoulder is yelling at me right now. Took a bad 15 ft drop that I had no chance in hell landing and the snow was super hard. I would ride the trees if anyone is looking for powder.

Went up and had a blast today with Skiwiz, definate best snow in low areas and eastern aspects. Here til Tuesday hopefully the wind relaxes a bit.

Snow is best in the trees. Wind wont stop. It is pretty much point and shoot riding. You can go anywhere you want. Saw a poor guy up on widow today with skis straight up. Been there a while from the looks of it. Talking snow Tuesday night &Wednesday. Need fresh.

How are the temperatures looking for this week/weekend? Heard it might be very warm. also is there good chances of significant accumlations this week ?

We typically get here around the 1st of November, go back to the farm around the 1st of April. We'll sprinkle in a few trips during the summer and spend most of August out here. Lots of folks leave trailers, beats the hell out of dragging 'em across Nebraska.

Hope we get the chance to ride together next year and tear it up. Also drink a few:rockon:
