Last week in the Snowy Range it was shaping up to be great conditions.
There was snow falling at elevation almost each night. The wind did not stopped up top though. The trees and ridges have all the snow build up. We found about a foot-two on the north ridge.
Here is a great representation of the last couple of days of riding. One tracks through the trees in the deep.

The slopes are still unstable, even more so with the fresh snow and wind loading. We should have skipped this hill. Even though it was small, east of north facing, and wind loading presented avy danger.
Check out this slab the slid off while I was digging. Scary.

This is a secondary crack under the next layer beneath the slab area.

Woke up 3/1 to almost 2 inches here at Ten Mile in, resting at 8500 ft. There should be a new batch of fresh in the hills at elevation.
On to this weeks Update from The Snowy Range and Ten Mile Inn. Making another trip out of the Minnesota area, we picked up a crew in Wyoming, MN at the Polaris plant. Got a sneak peak at the belt driven 2013 Pro RMK, looks sweet. The trip out was brutal through the wind in the mid-west, making for some minor travel delays.
The snow is great in the trees. Out in the open areas there are a ton of huge blow holes. Some of the open areas have blown clean, exposing rock and sage brush. Other areas have accumulated 10 foot drifts. Much of the snow in the open areas and close to the tree lines has compacted in the wind, making some hard areas. The accumulation has built up in the trees in the north east area. Day 1 and 2 were filled with too much fun boondocking in the trees for much picture taking.
Avy Report...
Winds were impressive. Lots of wind loading can be expected near and above treeline today. Winds were strong enough that most aspects will have some fresh wind slabs. Numerous reports of recent natural activity from the Steamboat side of the zone. Much of this coming from near and below treeline.
The weather has been up and down since our arrival on Sunday. Wind, then sunny high 20's, the wind then came back blowing around some of the new precipitation in the brutal cold.
