Was out riding on wednesday, blew a piston on my sled about 14km up the trail, had to limp it down, then tow, then push it onto the sleddeck with my girlfriend. Rough day, but lots of snow. Chelsea and Anna made it to the alpine and they said there's ridiculous amounts of snow up there. I didn't encounter a single rock or bare patch on the ride up from the 3km parking lot.

Stupid sled picked a damn fine time to blow a piston.

I was also blown away by how out of the 10-15 other riders we saw, maybe 3 had backpacks on? Seriously guys... here in Whistler everyone carrys beacon/shovel/probe/emergency gear. What the hell is wrong with riders in revy? I know it's early season, but almost everyone that came past was like "oh wow, staying overnight? that's a large pack..."

No, we just BRING a pack, with NORMAL avy gear, where the hell is yours?

people not wearing back packs in revy is normal. tranceivers are expensive you can buy a new aftermarket can for the cost of one of those. also why store your avy gear on your back when you can store it on your sled. although when your buddy is buried and all your gear is buried with your sled then it doesn't end up so well.

It just seems a little ridiculous to me, that's all. I've had a lot of friends die in recent years from backcountry accidents... I guess that changes your perspective on things a little.

Like you said, it doesn't make sense to have your avy gear on your sled.. it needs to be on your person, especially if you lose your sled and end up ontop of the debris and everyone else is burried, what do you do?

The last 2 years haven't been good with the low rain crust layers in the snow pack, seen a lot of stuff slide I've never seen go before. When you weigh the cost of a backpack/beacon/shovel/probe VS your friends lives... how can you not?

I refuse to ride with anyone that doesn't have gear on them.. most of my friends are the same way. I hope this changes in the future, I'd say 90% of locals riding in Whistler carry avy gear, and more.

ya i lived i whistler for 10 years. people there seemed a lot safer in the backcountry and better prepared. there are a lot of guys coming to revy without that experience who are stoked on sledding . The avalanche association is working on coming out with a better course to teach that will make it safer for sledders. hopefully this winter is a safer year , and more snow. looking good so far anyways.

cheers

Hey Robby, did you get upthere yet?

Richard

been up a couple of times . last time i was up there was 3feet at the cabin. ive been sick the last 7 days with the flu , and am waiting for a new sled to show up. the forcast is looking sick tons of snow and cold temps so i hope it stays that way .
