2009/10 Snowy Range snow conditions

Videos 1/7/10

Recent trip up the mountain from Laramie...Fortunate enough to catch a great bluebird day after a moderate storm rolled through....PS who was this that was "breaking" through cornices on a climb most likely around 45 degrees+?? That's news to me, never been fortunate enough to witness something like that:confused:

Great videos!!! Thanks for sharing. :beer;

Just got my maps for the Snowies today and my Wyoming trail permits should be on the way. We will be arriving weather permiting to the Snowies Feb 14th and staying for five nights at Mountain Meadow Cabins. Few questions for anyone who feels like answering them. First off what trails take you to the best boondocking, natural terrain, deep powder and which are the most scenic? Also what is the parking situation for staying at Mountian Meadows. I suppose we will have to fight for a space early Sunday with everyone else who is going up there for the day, but from what I have taken from reading this post is that I have to pay a fee to park there. Is this correct and if it is where does a guy get the permit for that? Is it a state park fee, or an actually parking permit? I plan on parking at the Green Rock parking area.

No it is not a permit area. It is a first come first park area. There is a small parking area at the end of green Rock that is a fee area and is supposed to be for the X country skiers. That small lot is on the south side of the Hwy. If you arrive on Sunday, you might have to park in the main parking area until later in the day. Then you should be able to pull your rig up towards the SML area. Talk to Chris when you check into the cabins, he'll help you out.

Also, all trails take you to good boondocking, natural terrain and deep powder if the conditions are right. It is all very scenic. Have a great time.

Thank You RLH, that was exactly my point.:D I've never seen it before either and it sounds a little tough to be doing in some really soft snow like it is now on the widowmaker with the biggest cornice that i've ever seen on that climb.

Haha ya I guess maybe I misunderstood what was going on....we were there on 1/7/10 and there was 18-24 inches of fresh on this glorious Widowmaker....Didn't get a good look at the cornice on top as my stock 163 would only pull me within a ways of it but with recent snow and lots of wind it looked as though it was curled over pretty bad, couldn't tell for sure if there was even a line you could take up and over....

I am from South Dakota and i need to pick a sled up in laramie on 1-15. Was wondering how the snow will be. if there is good snow i might try to line a trip up with a few friends sence i already have drive there anyways. it would be nice to split the fuels cost.

Went up today. You would not believe the extreme difference from last weekend to this weekend. The backside was pretty good still but tracked up even in the spots that were off the beaten path. If temps are what are forcasted this next weekend may be a bust.

Good base, need snow!!!!

its always worth trying to set up a ride.:beer;

Is the warm weather in the centennial area affecting the snow yet, any reports from mon would be great, coming out on the 15 thinkin with the warm weather we may change and go to tog. Thanks all for the reports and pics!!!

This is most likely the wrong place to ask ...But I was out in the Snowies last week and saw everyone had one of those Bungie Type get unstuck ropes ...Has a handle on one end and a hook on the other...Can these be bought on the net ..If so can you link me

Last week it snowed almost every day. The first picture was taken at the Albany Lodge later in the week. Up top got nearly 30" of snow last week. Don't think it's going away too soon.

2nd pic is me busting drifts from Tues. the 5th of Jan. and it was snowing hard that day too.

Oh...forgot about this pic.....check out the size of this drift on the edge of a field off CR305 and 338 not far from trail T and Q. This was taken before the snow started coming down hard.

Still good snow in the snowies:)

Have to know where to look for it, but there was still plenty of powder to play in on Monday. And it wasn't on the backside...:) The fresh stashes we found were off of W trail and 236. In our group of 10 I don't think anybody made it through the day without getting stuck a couple of times. Played in everything from 10" to 3' of fluff.

Just about ran out of gas on an 'adventurous' trip near the seven fools area after dark on the way home. Best upgrade I've made so far this year= headlight;)
