2008 nitro mtx vs 2012 mitro mtx

A friend of mine has a 2008 nitro mtx and it trenches real bad due to wide long running boards. He has his eye on a 2012 or maybe a 2013. Do the new ones work better (track, running boards, etc) to stay on top of the snow? I ride a Pro and we just got back from out west. He really wants to stay on Yamaha, so any help would be great!

The big thing on the 2008s-2009s are the rear skid and the track. The Maverick just flat out sucks. If he could get a Timber sled and a Camo Extreme track on there than it would be fine. But if he is looking at buying new instead than I would wait till the 2013s come out. The 2012 162 has a new track and they both have a by far better rear skid. In my opinion, wait till the '13s come out and go from there.

The tenching isnt caused by the wide running boards. If your boards are rubbing on the snow then you are already trenching.
The 08-09 had a steep approach angle and that was the cause. They fixed that in 2010 with an updated skid and there are some of those skids out there that can be bought reasonably. Lots of the high hp turbo guys pull them out and replace with M10 and other aftermarket skids to better help keep the nose down while climbing.
You can also relocate the 08-09 skid for a better approach angle. There are a couple threads on here about that if you search a little.

Didn't they fix the approach angle by only shortening the center shock in the skid 2010. I don't think they reworked the bulkhead of the nytro to lower the drive axle down any. I remember talking with Robbie with Avid who at one point was looking at making a new chaincase for the Nytro that lowered the drive but it was too costly to persue because the chaincase was molded into the bulkhead itself. You are right that the 08's trenched a lot because of the steep approach angle of the rear suspension. However The wide running board did cause the track to wash out in powder turns because they would get hung up on the snow as you laid the sled over.

I have a set of the Air Frame running boards and they help with track washout while carving and sidehilling. I think they make a difference for getting stuck also because the track doesn't unload all of the weight onto the running boards. I will say however that when I really dig it in it is stuck deep. I am usually having to dig out next to me to lift the back end out of the hole it just dug. That being said I know there are times that I would have gotten stuck with the old running boards. My tunnel was the new style tunnel so I am sure that it is only worse with the old one.

First thing is Dave needs to get off the seat. :face-icon-small-ton If he is looking for a track that would make a world of difference. I have a line on one like mine if he is interested.

Oh ya Nytro is spelled with a Y. It was great meeting and riding with ya!

I had an 08 and yes it would trench. If you keep the sled put an easy-ride under it an a 16 wide cam-extreme 2.5 Had the Mtn Tamer front and rear, was not real impressed, and it was set up by an expert...02

Since your asking for opinions, this is what I would do:
Wait to see what the 2013 model line up shows.

If it's nothing special then keep the 08, assuming it's paid for. Selling the 08 would probably yield 5-6k dollars and the new ones are around 10-12k. If you were to buy:
Skinz air frames ($450)
Any new aftermarket rear suspension(cheapest route is timbersled with exit x0's = around $1700 with drop brackets)
new track ($250-$750, I bought a $250 attack 20 and believe me it was definitely an upgrade over the maverick)

The air frame running boards coupled with the new rear suspension will eliminate the trenching issues, and a timbersled rear suspension coupled with new drop brackets drop around 35 lbs.

Upgrading the track will make a big difference in itself.

Summary
You will have a sled that will outperform/weighs less than the 2012 for between 2.5-3k rather than spending an extra 5-7k on getting a 2012.

The next thing on my list would be a new front end, preferably a zbroz or skinz style design.

After that I would look at power add-ons, I went down the road of Naturally Aspirated power increases but as everyone knows forced induction is the path most traveled. A second option would be to take that 2-3k and spend it on a turbo kit which wouldn't really solve your trenching problem but would probably make you forget about it!

2 totally different sleds IMO. i have a '10 put them side by side and look there is alot of difference!!

I have a 12. The track is awesome! My uncle has an 08, my dad has a 09 and I have rode both of them. They trench cause of that horrible track (in my opinion). The accent track is awesome!

As mentioned before, to cure the 08 problems with trenching, new track, new rear skid and clutching. The K-mod suspension works very well on our 08.
Items such as Skinz running boards and the Skinz Front end work well on all model years of Nytro's. You can also shed quite a bit of weight with items such as a tunnel dump exhaust and seat kits.

Keep the 2008 nytro + Add Turbo = no more trenching

Push turbo kit is only $3295 and they run awesome. You will have a turbo sled for less than a stock 2012 would cost you. you will still have extra cash so put a 2.5 challenger extreme track on it also. and if you still have extra cash put a timbersled rear suspension kit on it.

I ride a 2008 with push turbo and i love the wide running boards, i would not trade it for the newer ones. this sled gets around awesome in the powder

I also have a 2008 and was looking into the Yamaha lightweight skid kit, part #sma-rsusp-fx-oo. It says it is for the 2010's and 11's. Has anyone tried putting one of these in an 08?

definetly will not work in a 2008 thats a torsion spring setup. Your skid is Completely different than 2010 and 2011. the Yamaha suspension kit does not come with shocks, it re-uses the stock float shocks from the 2010-2011 skid. Do the timbersled if you have a 2008, you will save over 40 pounds.

I have a brand new Hartman tunnel extension for the 2008-2009 it has a taper to convert to the 2010 and newer style. Its brand new in the box if your interested.

Love my 2012, not even the same sled as the '08 and the '09 in our group. I debated picking up a '08 and modding it out but I'm happy with this 2012, far exceeding my expectations!
