163 vs 155

Two words - Track speed!

When I rode the 08 Dragon 163 I thought it felt like a boat compared to the 155 08 Dragon. I have not rode a 163 Pro but I have many miles on my 155 Pro. It's light and agile so why put more weight and lessen the track speed?

x2 i have time on both and would take the 155, very noticable difference in the tight technical. when the sleds weren't as good the long track would keep you going where the shorter would not. but with the much lighter sleds they are making now, well at least 2 of the manufacturers, that advantage is no longer as great. if your a bigger guy the longer the better but if you're a average sized guy i'd say why waste the energy? i guess it all depends on where you're looking for your sled to shine...

these are all good points. I spend a lot of time in the trees, i like to climb and i like to do some pretty big drops/jumps. My old man talked me into a 163 because that is what he rides but now i am second guessing myself a little bit. I guess time will tell. Im not sure ill notice much of a difference. After all, the difference isnt 8 inches right? I have always heard it is much less, more like 4 or 5...

8 inches in length or so yes, but in reality its only about 4 ish inches laid down on the snow more,

but heres my story, i went from a 144" to a 162" and absolutely no complaints and all the upsides, you'd think, geese a 144 to a 162" would surely be noticeable, but in no way to me it is, i love to run at hills, i lvoe to ride in the trees, drops and everything a mountain can offer, i never noticed a single downside to going to a much bigger track and only so many gains

more traction, more floatation, easier to get unstuck, hit reverse and often itll walk its self out!

besides, i'd think the only time you'd actually notice the extra length is in tight spots where you decide, crap i got to turn around going up some grown in old bush road,

or for those who like to go up a hill, almost get stuck and do those magical turn on a dime turns, yeah im sure a shorter track is better for those than a long, but in reality, i dont think we really do that tight of a turn and i'd think most of us know when its time to turn around instead of hoping for that extra 2 ft LOL

the actual difference between a 155 and 163 is two rows of paddles more on the ground for the 163...

Nobody has mentioned what can destroy a sled in a heartbeat: Coming down! My bud's 163 was able to stop/slow coming down in marginal conditions MUCH better than my 153 was. Part of it was the track itself, but I had some scary rides coming down behind him where he didn't break a sweat.

Just a thought, but if your buddy has a 163, it must be a Doo or a Polaris. they both have pretty decent tracks for downhill braking.

Now yours being a 153, I am assuming it is a cat. The powerclaw absolutely sucks for downhill braking!! I sold mine and put on a camo extreme 2.5 and made a huge difference, both uphill, and down.

Just thought I would throw that out there. Might be some of the difference you are seeing.

Why ride a 163 when you can put a 174 on it? All comes down to personal preference, I would think the 163 would also do better on the whoops on the trail... I read an article the other day about a guy in Jackson that has like a 186 and is going to try a 201 this year...

There should only be 3 track lengths from the factory.

a 121x1.25"

a 144x2"

a 163x2.5"

If you only ride hardpack or trails, get a 121"

If you occasionally ride trails and hardpack and occasionally like a powder-filled meadow get a 144x2"

If you primarily ride pow and only use the trails to get to the trees and hills, buy a 163x2.5"

I would have to agree with this.. I have never regretted going to a longer track & I have done it a few times. My sled will be a 174 next season.

He's had this sled at the Jackson Hill Climb in the vendor area. Unless he has something worked out with Camoplast to make him a one piece track, he cuts his main track and then cuts another track into sections then bolts the sections to the main track to get that length. Needless to say, the bolted together track doesn't last very long.

If you can't get somewhere on a well running sled with a 155" you should just go back to the truck. If you need a 163" to get around you should go back to the truck because your tracking up snow that your not good enough to ride. :face-icon-small-con

again all depends on your personal preference if you want a 144 ride it, if you want a 174 your choice also.

I have went from a 580 Arctic Cat 136 challenger track had fun on it, was limited to where I can go and got stuck quite a bit,

next sled, 98 Summit X, got the sled with a 136 never rode it until I changed to a 153 Challenger track off an M series, Wow what a difference I could creep along in the powder stop and take right off again if I was gettin bucked around on a climb and had to slow up to get a handle on the sled could just throttle in a up I would go I loved that length, couldnt do that with the 136 with WOT take off in same snow still got stuck twice as much.

Next sled, (Primary sled now) 04 Rev Summit X 144, didn`t ride it either with stock track swapped before snow flew to a Series 4 159x15x2 1/8 , Wow Wow man this thing with absolutely go anywhere my skills will take me got a good deal on this or Itrack or would of installed another skidoo Challenger style 159 on it, I also like the 15inch wide , but Im goint to be swapping chassis pretty soon when I recieve the Nun for my new chassis that has alot of VE parts on it, D&R, chaincase belly pan protector, Tunnel Ext, Drop brackets. and will eventually install a 163 on it I don`t beleive I am going to sacrifice any handling effects goint to this track it will really only be 2inch longer than what I have now and of course 16inch wide and have 2.5 paddles, a

Anyway personally I have went longer track on everysled I have owned and would never to shorter, I`m sure the 155 will go many places but if I was dropping that kind of cash on a new sled I would not buy a shorter sled I would go 163, its so nice knowing you can stop in powder and take off again and by time you get back to the truck and you not as fatiqued or tired near as much since bigger track usually means less diggin out,

155 or 163 is the topic, to me ONLY 4inchs ? 163 all the way, most put bigger wheels in them anyway that just shortens them up a bit the bigger the wheels. along with all the light weight parts you can buy for all the new and older sleds, so the lighter you go the easier to throw around so if you buy a shorter sled and dump a bunch of cash in light weight parts they why not go bigger track all that weight off it is going to make it easier to handle anyway..

just my 02, I`m 160lbs, 5`10" sometimes have difficulty throwing a sled around but thats me. not the track length had same troubles on my 136 that I do on my 159.. still workin on the downhill to uphill carve turnaround most difficult for me to master, when I was on the shorter track when I would try and not make it and had to go down farther and farther tryin over and over I would be screwed with the 136 down in the hole but with the 159 point and shoot!!!!!!!! hopefully better this year since I have narrowed my frontend my self to 36inch
