ask me about #1 in reliability! My brother ownes an 06 apex stock except for aftermarket axhaust, with 1500 miles on it and it completely blew up a month ago. It threw the rod through the case and did major damage. We delivered it to the dealer and they took it completely apart and said it was still rich and something in the motor was defective, best guess some valve of spring stuck down on the cylinder causing the piston to break up , and well the rest is history. The dealer says they have seen yamaha good will parts for sleds where stuff like this has happened, but the word we are getting is no deal from yamaha. I understand it is not under warranty, but they claim to be so damn reliable, that this stuff never happens, well it did! and now i am out of luck and 8000 dollars to put it back together. If you want my opinion you are better off going with a 2 stroke that may need more matinence, but at least you can do it. These 4 strokes are basically impossible to work on unless you are a yamaha mechanic, so i have to pay the dealer to rebuild it.
I guess you can say im pissed off I own a lot of yamaha stuff (double digits) these sleds are supposed to last longer, the manual even says the valves dont need inspected for 26,000 miles. Well I got 1,500.!
I'm going 2 stroke from now on and I'm definately done with yamaha! Anybody want to buy an apex?

hahahahaha good luck with that one buddy, most 800's out there are blowin apart, polaris 800's are blowin up within 1000 miles and the skidoo's are no better with their famous crank bearings and their 50 mile lifetime belts at 150$ a piece, my advice would be stick with the yamis, you must have gotten one out of a thousand that have blown up

whateva... I knew you were kidding ya goof. I talked to Yamaha today and sent Mr apex on the road (Hopefully) to some satisfaction. Funny thing never been a call logged from any dealer but me today on that sled... Things that make ya go HMMMM???!!!

it's true I talked to michelle today and it turns out my dealer, well used to be dealer, never even tried to contact yamaha and see what they would do. I feel like i've been totally used and abused. Thank you so much for your help and i'll let you know what happens, Hopefully my faith will be restored in yamaha, i have too much stuff to sell if it isn't!

hope it all works out, but if it doesn,t these motors are not that difficult to work on, it doesn,t take any special knowledge, its just a 4 stroke motor, pistons, rods, crank, cams , lifters, and valves. block and head, if you can work on a 2 stroke motor you can work on these just get a shop manuel and follow directions the first time.

My advice, now that you see the REAL culprit of the "problem", is rethink spending any more money down at that stealership you went to. I think I'd have a heart to heart talk with the General Manager (bypass all the piss ant lower managers, being that they weren't any help in the issue) and I'd ask for a good reason why you would EVER take something back to them for maintenance, or spend any more of your hard earned dollars there when they completely screwed you.

*I'd also send Michelle a really nice St. Patty's Day gift, a nice Easter Basket, a mother's day card, etc etc etc...:)*

I agree...it's actually cleaner to work on , without all the carbon "gunk" and "goo" from the 2s mess. Just more moving parts, but there's no magic happening in there...

well I just got off the phone with yamaha and they don't care. It seems that it is a time issue and dosen't matter that it only has 1500 miles on it, they don't seem to care that the dealer says it was defective either the "time has expired" according to yamaha. So any way i'm right back to where I started with a blown up sled, but I did make a new friend. Thanks Michelle, i'll be in touch about that new motor. It turns out that yamaha dosen't really care like everybody seems to think they do, unless its in the one year warranty, then your golden. so it looks like you need to buy a new one every year if you want to be safe, too rich for my blood. Yamaha just lost a loyal family of customers, especially my local dealer!!

I was under the impression the apex motor was based of the FJ motors, i have little knowledge of the apex motor but the FJ motor is awsome i have over 62000 on the bike, with one rebuild at 45000. I hope you can find a motor though, good luck!

I understand that you are frustrated, and I would be too. Replacing all of your toys is only going to hurt you. Yamaha made their money off those deals long ago. Plus anything you buy will most likely be LESS reliable.
Sorry about your bad luck, but that's all it is.

...it turns out my dealer, well used to be dealer, never even tried to contact yamaha and see what they would do...

Amazing... same thing happened to me.

I think the dealers talk to their RTA first, RTA sez Yamaha won't work on it, and they (the dealer) never bother to pursue it...

...stealership....

BWAHAHAHAHAH!!! You hit that so hard it's singin' like a ten penny finish nail smacked on the head with a greezy ball peen hammer!!!

sorry that you had bad luck with this sled, but thats all it was. it looks like you have purchased alot of yamaha products and no other issues, that in it self proves the reliability, the sled is out of warrantee, no other manufacture will take care of an out of warrantee vehicle, ford, chevy, dodge, skidoo, arctic cat, honda, you get the idea, if you want to go back to a 2 smoke thats your choice not hurting any body but yourself. I hope you don,t make all your decissions in life off of one bad experience when from your list you have had alot of good experiences with this product. good luck.

only time i have ever heard of yamaha engines blowing up is when they are run out of oil. very strange
