Ya gotta love the republicans

Join the Dark Side.

I remember the time that Catherine - one of my daughter Shannon's friends when she was little, told me that she wanted to be president one day. Both of her parents are liberal democrats and were standing there with us -and I asked Catherine - "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" Catherine replied - "I would give houses to all the homeless people." "Wow - what a worthy goal you have there Catherine." I told her, "You don't have to wait to until you're president to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in the back yard and I will pay you $5 dollars. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $5 dollars to use for a new house." Catherine (who was about 4) thought that over for a second, while her mom looked at me seething, and Catherine replied, "why doesn't the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop and you can pay him the $5 dollars."

(Welcome to the Republican party, Catherine)

It is that simple. Make yourself useful to someone else, be creative, sell yourself, you may need to sweat a little, get up out of bed a little earlier than you like, act in a professional manner, you may be amazed at the results. Then again I guess that is asking a lot of some people when they know it's easier to ask for a freebie. Then you have become useful to the liberal party. JMO

One question...

Now don't get me wrong, I agree 110% with you guys on this. BUT, just to play the other side (well, not really other side), how would a homeless person get that first step in the door to start working? Honestly, what would you do if a homeless guy rolled up to your house/business and asked to pick up poop for $? I'm a dang nice guy, but part of why I might not accept is a trust issue. Yes, some might be very honsest, hard working people, but some are not. 2nd, I hate paying for stuff that I can do myself. How would they get a job with a city or any business without a home address, no SS#, ect... I don't know, I doubt in the near future we'll have a flood of homeless people who want jobs but if they do how can they get them? Just thinking here...

Most homless people take the first step to becomeing homeless of there own free will. It boils down to personal responsibility like the rest of us he made his choices ans has to live with them . Most of us choose more wisley!I do see your point but he has to make it for himself just like the rest of us!

Ya, I totally agree with you, but is it always too late to change and want to be productive? That's what my mom always said when I'd do something stupid..."We all make choices..." It really made me  at the time, now I'll have to use it on my kids! :D

Care to explain? So they wake up and say, today I am going to become homeless?

Some info on homeless people

The major reasons and causes for homelessness as documented by many reports and studies include:[43][44][45]

Lack of affordable housing - not willing to work.
Substance abuse and lack of needed services - wont get sober and work
Mental illness and lack of needed services - ?????
Domestic violence -
Poverty, caused by many factors - Not willing to work or work harder
Prison release and re-entry into society -
Lack of affordable healthcare
Natural disaster - not willing to make the situation better and work to make it better.

I know that there is some real unfortunate situations and family have become homeless for reason completly out of there control. But the ones who want better for them selfs will make for a better situation. Look at Chris Gardner for an examplehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Gardner

In most situations that I have observed, homelessness is a true state of mind.
They are there own worst enemy and when given a helping hand they dont take the extra steps needed to better them selfs.

So 50% = most? The mental illness was thought to be around 30%, which is a much larger number than I would have thought. It is also interesting that those in foster care are 8 times more likely (800%) to become homeless then those that have not been in foster care.

The Chris Gardner story is a great one, but one of exception and not the standard. To use him as an example that anyone can do it is not correct. He is an exceptional person who has succeeded under extraordinary conditions.

How many of you have actually offered work to one of those people with a will work for food sign? I have a couple of times and they declined. What's that tell you? I won't give any of them anything without them earning it. I had a dude clean my rims one night downtown and I took him to the shelter paid his way in and bought him a sandwich. Most of the time they don't even offer work for food or money on their sign just says help me blah blah blah. I have no sympathy for someone that refuses to take some sort of action to help themselves.

I also remember a time that I was hired by a boyscout camp to deliver a bunch of beads they donated to a homeless shelter in Minneapolis. I drove them down there, found the director of the shelter and began to start unloading the beds with him. NOT ONE of the people staying at the shelter, that were to benefit from the beds, helped unload them. they just sat around and watched. It was like I offended them when I asked one of them to get the door for me when I was carrying a bed frame in.

Becuase he took the initiative to better his situation is why I used him as an example.
But I get it ,because he is an "exceptional person " he doesnt count.

Who said he doesn't count? I just said he is not the norm. Just like Donald Trump is not the norm. Look at this country. The majority of the people are not millionaires, and I would take that one step further and say the majority of people on snowest are not millionaires. Now if there happens to be some people on here that are millionaires, is it correct for them to say, why aren't the rest of the people millionaires too, it can be done.

If you answer agree with the statement "Why aren't the rest of the people millioniares too, it can be done" I would expect you to be a millionaire also.

other than those with a "mental illness", and the occasional case, cause chit happens sometimes, a lot are lazy and looking for a handout!!!!!!! i lived in dallas at the end of the 90's and that place was booming! macdonalds was giving $1000 bonuses to anyone who stayed with them for at least 3 months!!!!!!!!!!! yet there was still many, many, many homeless people, holding up their signs "will work for food" and what not!!!! bullchit, if they would work for food, everyone would've hired them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also in calgary last year they interviewed about a dozen homeless people and many of them stated they don't want to work all that hard, and it's easier to beg than do any actual work!!!!!!!!!!! their words, not mine
