So my son is diagnosed ADHD, and we get a prescription for Strattera (25 mg) and it's about $30 a month with insurance, not a big deal. We do this for awhile and it doesn't get any better at all. So we go back to a different pediatrician and they say "hmmm for his size and weight he should be at about 75 mg per day, so we get the new prescription and WHAMMMM the cash price is $400 and copay is $150 per month. I'm all for a company making a nickel but holy crap, and guess what no generic until 2017. I'm gonna see if we can't do three 25 mg pills instead of one 75 mg if the math works out it will only be $90.

Do meds work like that?

I wouldnt let your son take those mind control drugs. They are usually nothimg more than glorified speed. Also ADHD is over diagnosed and misunderstood. Seek alternative solutions. No kid should have to take speed everyday. Thats just my opinion. I know there are people out there that ritalin, dexedrine, etc has helped them tremendously. Some people are just not made to sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day listening to lectures and taking notes. Young men need to be out doing physical activities a lot.

ps. sorry if i didint spell everything right

Good post Mcfly, much to my surprise. I have to agree Sturg, look into alternatives, I'm no homeopathic nutjob but I do believe that nutrition is a huge (and mostly overlooked) factor in ADHD.

yep! get a dietary study done. usually they look at everything the perosn eats over a 7 day period, and lots of times they can find a vaild reason the person is hyper! more often than not, it's due to waaaaaaay too much sugar intake. not always the case, but sure is easy enough to find out, and much better than the alternative

Been there done that, have been to 3 pediatricians, a phsycologist, and a psychiatrist and all of them are in agreement. The Strattera seems to have the least side effects, he tried and couldn't handle Concerta and I would not consider Ritalin. The lower dosage of Strattera worked and he said he was able to handle school and projects better, but at the dosage he was at just didn't make it very far into the day.

As I said it's not so much the hyperactivity but he just can't settle enough to concentrate, he is able to lose his papers in class without moving (to the point where even the teacher can't find them right after giving them to him and he never moved), he can be distracted by any(every)thing and the teachers have been at a loss as well. We have limited his diet, especially sugar and processed foods, we have tried to get organizational tools (folders, notebooks, etc.) to no avail. The only reason he made it through 5th grade was because we made a photocopy of all of his homework and at the end of each day would go in and talk to each individual teacher and when they would say "nope didn't get that homework" we would hand them the copy.

crappy!

I've gon my whole life with ADHD. There is a lot you can do that other people can't because of it. It's not a bad thing. The best thing to do is work with your son and when he is in school work with his teachers too. It isn't a terrible thing like everyone makes it out to be. Do some research and learn about it and what you can do before just giving him the drugs. They messed me up bad when they put me on them. He'll learn to control it with help and will thrive. There are alot of things he can do that others can't that will royally piss them off.

It will take time, but...

Do some research into what foods can cause the symptoms. Then do a challenge diet. This is where you eliminate the one item from the diet for a specified time, so you can see what the result is. You may find this is, partly, a food issue. Or more specifically, a non-food dietary item. This will be the best long term approach. No fun, time consuming, but life is that way sometimes.

Ummm.....
....LOL.

HA HA! Owned!

All natural alternative. I dont smoke cigs, drink, or take any pills. I guess there are alternatives. Im sure one day ill quit weed too. Id rather smoke weed than eat ritalin. Ill take what god gave me.

PIZZA!

Sorry about your dilemma Sturgis. Try asking the doc about another med, most "diagnosis" will have more than one treatment. Or try another pharmacy, we switched pharmacies for my wife's med and the co-pay dropped by $20

Me being a kid in school, I hate having to sit at a desk all day long. I feel I have ADHD myself sometimes, just because of the fact the subject(etc.) is just so boring. Their is a couple kids at my school that are actually ADHD and their is a night and day difference when they do take their meds compared to when they dont.

How does he act at home? Or on summer/Christmas break when he has not been at shcool for awhile?

When did this problem start, when he started school or started a new grade?

Sorry to hear. Feel bad for what your son is going threw.
